t’s a winter’s night in 1989. A
cricket-loving teenager stirs,
feeling the cold of a limb which has
escaped the warmth of his bedding.
Amid the haze of sleep, his mind
twigs to an opportunity, as a squinted
eye reads the red digits of a clock radio,
indicating it’s nearing 3am. It’s almost

Despite the cold, his arm reaches to the
floor and blindly feels for the Walkman,
his trusty bedside companion. A finger
fumbles in the dark to find the ‘on’ switch
and a set of thin metal headphones are
set in place.
It’s a well-worn practice these past
weeks, one where the youngster would
regularly continue to lay flat and
casually tune in for a moment or two,
before drifting back to sleep with the
headphones still in place.
But on this night he almost sits bolt ABC outside

boards around the world, culminating in
the extraordinary popularity of the IPL.
It was no different in Australia, where
the state-based Twenty20 Big Bash that
was first contested in 2005 evolved into
the franchise-based eight-team BBL.
From 2011 the BBL has been a feature of
the Australian summer, dwarfing other
summer codes to be played in front of
bumper crowds on TV and in stadiums
throughout the holiday period.
The sport’s biggest names regularly
turned out to supplement a who’s who of
domestic talent to help bolster interest.
International names such as New
Zealand’s Brendon McCullum; West
Indians Kieran Pollard, Dwayne Bravo,
Chris Gayle; South Africa’s Herschelle
Gibbs as well as England’s World Cup-
winning skippers Paul Collingwood, Jos
Buttler and Eoin Morgan, who joined the
likes of Shane Warne, Michael Hussey,
Aaron Finch, Brett Lee and Dirk Nannes.

PROFILES BY ANDREW FERGUSON AUSTRALIA MEN

DAVID WARNER
LH BAT, RA LEG BREAK

This explosive opening batsman has modified

his style over the years to the point where he
has become a more rounded and patient
player, but he has struggled with form over his
last 20 Tests, scoring 974 runs at an average
of 27, with one century and four 50s in his last
36 innings.

USMAN KHAWAJA
LH BAT, RA MEDIUM

Very talented top order batsmen who had

struggled for form for much his career, but since
his return to the Test Arena in 2022, he has been
elevated to opener and subsequently became one
of Australia’s best, racking up 2117 runs at an
average of 60.49. Textbook player, very patient
and is one of the best at building a team innings.

MARNUS LABUSCHAGNE
RH BAT, RA LEG BREAK

After a year of toiling away in the Australian middle

order, Labuschagne’s form exploded as he
notched 8 fifties and 10 centuries over his next 20
Tests to move his batting average into the 60s.
Since then he has found runs a little harder to
come by, but has still scored a respectable 748
runs at 35.62.

STEVE SMITH
RH BAT, RA LEG BREAK

Smith is sitting just 680 shy of the highly

respected milestone of 10,000 Test runs. This
fact, coupled with his amazing average of 58.62,
offers a deep appreciation of how brilliant he has
been across 13 years. He is still one of the
toughest batsmen in the game to bowl to and his
bowling is also capable of snaring the odd wicket.

106 ABC CRICKET 2023/2024 SEASON

AUSTRALIA MEN

TRAVIS HEAD
LH BAT, WICKET-KEEPER

Head comes into the Australian summer in solid

form, having scored 362 runs at 36.2 in the
Ashes, including 3 fifties, 1 in each of the first 3
Tests, then a 48 in the fourth Test and a 43 in the
fifth. His Offies also claimed a pair of wickets. His
last ODI for Australia saw him produce his highest
international score, with 91 against South Africa.

CAMERON GREEN
RH BAT, RA FAST MEDIUM

Green has proven to be a very useful middle to

lower order batsman, capable of producing good
scores in the Test arena, including 6 fifties and a
brilliant 114 earlier this year in India. A regular
wicket-taker as a change bowler, who sends down
some sharp fast-mediums, making him a very
handy commodity to this Australian side.

ALEX CAREY
LH BAT, WICKET-KEEPER

Consistent scorer in both Test and ODI cricket,

Carey has cemented himself in the Australian
sides with his stellar glovework behind the stumps
and his ability to knock out decent scores lower in
the batting order. In Tests, he has an average of
31.34, with 5 fifities and 1 century, while having
already amassed 87 dismissals in just 25 Tests.

PAT CUMMINS
RH BAT, RA FAST

Cummins has a brilliant Test bowling record,

having claimed 239 wickets at an average of
22.95. He is able to occupy the crease for a
decent amount of time. He plays a positive brand
of cricket, always striving for a result. In his 21
Tests as captain, just 5 Tests have been drawn,
while 11 have been victories for the Aussies.

107
PROFILES AUSTRALIA MEN

MITCHELL STARC
LH BAT, LA FAST

Australia’s opening quick alongside Cummins,

Starc’s express pace, coupled with his ability to
swing the ball and deliver brilliant yorkers, makes
him a very dangerous fast bowler. He currently
has 333 Test wickets at an average of 27.61, while
also sporting a healthy batting average of 21.52,
making him a very handy tail order batsman.

JOSH HAZLEWOOD
LH BAT, RA FAST MEDIUM

Another Australian quick bowler who has

amassed a bagful of wickets in his career,
claiming 238 scalps at an average of 26.23. That
bowling average is very similar to his ODI record,
where he has 121 wickets at 26.74. He comes into
the Australian summer in good wicket-taking
form, having snared 16 wickets in his last 4 Tests.

NATHAN LYON
RH BAT, RA OFF BREAK

Australia’s sole specialist spin bowler, Lyon is

just 4 Test wickets shy of the incredible mark
of 500. The flatter decks and drop-in pitches
in Australia do tend to make it harder for spin
bowlers to have any real impact, but not for Lyon,
who still manages to grab a bunch of wickets no
matter where he plays.

MITCHELL MARSH
RH BAT, RA MEDIUM

At times, Mitch Marsh slots into the batting

line-up anywhere you need him and can bowl
with reasonable success in Tests, but has
proven to be a genuine master when it comes
to performing in limited overs cricket. He’s no
slouch either with the bat, notching 3 Test tons
and a further 2 more in ODIs.

108 ABC CRICKET 2023/2024 SEASON

AUSTRALIA WOMEN

ALYSSA HEALY
RH BAT, WICKET-KEEPER

After 101 ODIs, Healy has a batting average of

35.39 and a strike rate of 100.32, with five
centuries and 15 fifties to her name. During the
2022 Women’s World Cup, she scored 129 in the
semi and then 170 in the Final in back-to-back
match-winning performances, which also resulted
in her being named player of the series.

ELLYSE PERRY
RH BAT, RA FAST MEDIUM

Arguably the greatest all-rounder in women’s

cricket, Perry has a batting average in ODIs of
51.54 and a bowling average of 25.24. She comes
into the upcoming Australian summer in stunning
form, having scored 3 consecutive ODI 50s in July,
2 against England and 1 against Ireland.

BETH MOONEY
LH BAT, WICKET-KEEPER

Amazingly consistent batter who can bat

anywhere, from opening to the middle order, and
performs with sheer brilliance time and time again.
An ODI career average of 53.42 is a testament to
her brilliance, consistency and ability. A ‘first-
picked’ player any team dreams of having.

ASH GARDNER
RH BAT, RA OFF BREAK

A talented all-rounder who comes into the

Australian summer in stunning ODI form. This year
she has scored 19 against Pakistan, followed by
scores of 21, 33 and 41 against England and then
65 against Ireland, while having taken at least a
wicket in each of her last 14 games she’s bowled
in, including 5 bags of 3 wickets.

109
PROFILES AUSTRALIA WOMEN

TAHLIA MCGRATH
RH BAT, RA MEDIUM

McGrath is arguably one of the best current-day

all-rounders in Women’s T20I, sporting a batting
average of 53.20 (and a strike rate of 144.82) and
a bowling average 20.33, which are insane
averages in Test and ODI cricket for any player,
male or female, but in the ultra-aggressive T20
game, those numbers look impossible.

MEGAN SCHUTT
RH BAT, RA FAST MEDIUM

Schutt is a brilliant bowler, known most for her

inswingers, which she combines with sharp pace
and the occasional leg cutter, making it hard for
any batter to get on the front foot, or be overly
aggressive against her deliveries. In 85 ODIs she
has taken 115 wickets at an average of 24.26 with
an economy rate of 4.22.

ALANA KING
RH BAT, RA LEG BREAK

King is another of Australia’s impressive T20I

bowlers who is starting to prove as valuable in
the ODI side as well. Regarded as a bowling
all-rounder, she has taken 26 wickets in 20 ODIs
at an average of 24.03, but in T20Is she’s snared
21 wickets in 22 games at 19.52. Also capable of
holding down her end with the bat.

ANNABEL SUTHERLAND
RH BAT, RA MEDIUM FAST

Sutherland has only just turned 22 and is already

establishing herself as the future of Australian
women’s cricket as the next great all-rounder.
Currently batting in the top order, she has a
batting average of 42.75 and 22.81 as a bowler in
ODIs. Took a pair of 3-for’s in 2 ODIs against West
Indies on home soil in the lead-up to our summer.

110 ABC CRICKET 2023/2024 SEASON

AUSTRALIA WOMEN

JESS JONASSEN
LH BAT, LA ORTHODOX

Jonassen established herself as an international

star in just her 13th T20I appearance, when
she took 3/25 off her 4 overs to stunt the English
run chase in the Women’s T20I World Cup final,
helping Australia to a 4-run victory. Her bowling
consistently delivers wickets, making her a vital
member of the side.

DARCIE BROWN
RH BAT, RA FAST

The young quick has been too hard to ignore, even

as a teenager, forcing her way into the Australian
T20I side in 2021 against New Zealand, just weeks
after turning 18, where she opened the bowling
with Megan Schutt, claiming the wicket of opener
Frances Mackay. A prolific wicket-taker.

KIM GARTH
RH BAT, RA MEDIUM FAST

Brilliant wicket-taking quick with the ability to pile

on runs late in the innings, Garth is a tremendous
asset to the Aussie side, adding depth to their
batting and bowling line-ups. She is expected to
be one of the automatic picks for the Aussie ODI
and T20I sides yet again.

PHOEBE LITCHFIELD
LH BAT, RA LEG BREAK

In the ODI arena she has played 11 games, scoring

a brilliant unbeaten 106 against Ireland back in
July. She has racked up 344 runs at an average of
49.14, while in T20Is her average is slightly better,
at 49.50 after 5 games. In stellar form and could
well be pushing to be a regular member of both
ODI and T20I Aussie sides by the end of summer.

111
PROFILES PA K I S TA N M E N

BABAR AZAM
RH BAT, RA OFFBREAK

Pakistan’s skipper is a typically rock-solid run

scorer in the Test arena, but he hasn’t had a
chance to build up any genuine form due to
Pakistan only playing 3 Tests in 2023. Since 2022
his form in Tests has been close to the most
consistent in his career to date – 1311 runs at an
average of 59.59, including 7 fifties and 4 tons.

SARFARAZ AHMED
RH BAT, WICKET-KEEPER

The experienced keeper-batsman made his return

to Pakistan’s Test side in 2022, almost 4 years
after his previous Test, playing against NZ. He
scored 86 and 53 and in the second Test in
January this year he piled on 78 and 118 to pick up
player of the match honours. His experience will
be very useful in tough Aussie conditions.

SHAHEEN SHAH AFRIDI

LH BAT, LA FAST

Pakistan’s express opening bowler will be coming

to Australia full of confidence, especially against
Marnus Labuschagne, whose wicket he claimed 3
times in the 3-match Test series last year. Against
Sri Lanka in July this year he took his 100th wicket
in his 26th Test. He has taken 96 ODI wickets at
an impressive average of 23.54.

HASAN ALI
RH BAT, RA MEDIUM FAST

Very good pace bowler who has a great ability to

claim wickets. He already has 78 Test wickets at
25.68, while in ODIs he is just one wicket away
from 100, with a respectable average of 30.32,
especially when he is brought on to bowl late in
the innings to stem the flow of runs. Expect him to
get plenty out of the hard Australian decks.

PA K I S TA N M E N WEST INDIES MEN

SAUD SHAKEEL
LH BAT, LA ORTHODOX

Brilliant middle-order batsman, made his Test

debut in December last year at the ripe age of
27 and has wasted no time in cementing his
place in the side. His lowest score so far in
his 13 Test innings is 22, while he already has
6 fifties and two centuries. So far he boasts a
batting average of 87.50.

IMAM-UL-HAQ
LH BAT, RA LEGBREAK

Prodigious opener who obliterated the Aussie

attack in the first Test of their 2022 series, scoring
157 in the first innings, combining with Azhar Ali to
score 208 runs for the second wicket, before
scoring an unbeaten 111 in an unbeaten 252-run
first wicket partnership with Abdullah Shafique.

KRAIGG BRATHWAITE
RH BAT, RA OFFBREAK

Exclusively a Test player now, Brathwaite has

proven over 87 Tests to be a steady hand at the
top of the batting order, having produced a dozen
tons and 29 fifties. He has performed admirably in
Australia in the past, scoring 425 runs at an
average of 47.22.

JASON HOLDER
RH BAT, RA MEDIUM FAST

Brilliant Test and ODI all-rounder who bats in

the middle order and can bowl anywhere
from opening to second or third change. His
versatility and adaptability make him a huge
asset to this West Indian outfit in both forms
of the game. He will be very comfortable in the
Australian conditions.

Talented keeper-batsman has made himself the

first choice keeper for the West Indies’ Test side
since late 2020. He is a steady scorer, hard to
dismiss and has a great ability to rotate the strike
and build an innings. Last year he scored his
maiden Test century against England. His work as
a keeper is very good, with 98 dismissals.

SHANNON GABRIEL
RH BAT, RA FAST

Gabriel is now exclusively a Test bowler; the

powerfully built quick has claimed 165 wickets in
59 Tests at an average of 32.41. He has been very
consistent over the years at bowling tight and
restricting the run scoring, while also showing an
ability to snare wickets at a regular rate. Still very
good at keeping batsmen quiet

KEMAR ROACH
RH BAT, RA FAST MEDIUM

Experienced pace bowler who has a very good

Test average of 27.75, however he has struggled
in Australia in past visits, claiming just 8 Test
wickets at an average of 90.63, while in ODIs he
has just 6 wickets at 55.50. He comes into the
Australian summer in decent form though, having
claimed a pair of 5-fors since last June.

SOUTH AFRICA WOMEN

LAURA WOLVAARDT
RH BAT

The South African opener and captain is in some

strong form, scoring a brilliant 50 off 75 balls,
followed by a glorious unbeaten 124 off 141 balls,
both against New Zealand and helping South
Africa to wins in both games and thus, the series.
She then belted another half-century, scoring 53
off 44 balls in the T20I against the Kiwis.

MARIZANNE KAPP
RH BAT, RA MEDIUM

One of the best all-rounders in women’s cricket,

sporting an ODI batting average of 32.45 and a
bowling average of 25.67, Kapp also comes to
Australia in great form, especially with bat in hand.
Against New Zealand recently, she scored 27, then
an unbeaten 45 off 49 balls.

CHLOE TRYON
RH BAT, LA ORTHODOX

The experienced all-rounder is currently in

somewhat mixed form, but she will definitely be
comfortable in the Australian conditions. Her
batting has been very good, highlighted by a
brilliant and match-winning 71 off 58 balls
against New Zealand.

SUNE LUUS
RH BAT, RA LEGBREAK

Another of the supremely talented South African

all-rounders, Luus is in career-best form with the
bat, averaging 38.8 in her last 6 ODIs and 47 in her
last 3 T20Is. Has evolved into a reliable middle
order bat over the last 2 seasons, having not
bowled since South Africa played Ireland in mid
2022, where she took 2/27 after scoring 93 runs.

PROFILES SOUTH AFRICA WOMEN INDIA WOMEN

AYABONGA KHAKA
RH BAT, RA MEDIUM

Khaka has recently returned to open the bowling

for South Africa after 5 years of being the first
change. Her bowling style will see her get plenty
of extra pace and bounce out of the Australian
pitches, which will make her very tricky to get on
top of. She has always been the sort of bowler who
is considered highly economical.

SINALO JAFTA
RH BAT, WICKET-KEEPER

The South African keeper is a stable pair of hands

and has been donning the gloves for the national
side since 2016. She isn’t regarded as a lightning-
fast scorer when wielding the willow, but has
proven to be very hard to dismiss, while also being
quite adept at pushing the ball around, rotating
the strike regularly and occupying the crease.

SNEH RANA
RH BAT, RA OFFBREAK

A bowling all-rounder, Sneh Rana is a bowler who

often takes wickets in bunches, while also having
the ability to make some good starts; she even
has a half-century to her name from last year
against Pakistan. Proven to be a great asset to the
Indian bowling attack in their T20I side, taking
wickets regularly while also slowing the run rate.

YASTIKA BHATIA
LH BAT, WICKET-KEEPER

Bhatia has always been a consistently solid

scorer at the crease, with 14 of her 21 ODI innings
getting into double figures, 4 times reaching 50.
Behind the stumps though, she is very quick and
very good when keeping to slow bowlers; her last
8 ODIs have seen her grab 9 stumpings. One of
the rising stars of women’s cricket.

116 ABC CRICKET 2023/2024 SEASON

INDIA WOMEN

SMRITI MANDHANA
LH BAT, RA OFFBREAK

Smriti Mandhana has proven to be a very

consistent opener, with an ODI batting average of
42.95, having scored 31 times over 50, including 5
centuries, while half of her 80 ODI innings have
seen her score at least 30 runs. In the ODI game,
she has proven to be reliable and on many
occasions, quite brilliant.

HARMANPREET KAUR
RH BAT, RA OFFBREAK

Strong, at times, a dominating top-order bat, Kaur

is a boundary-finding (and clearing) run machine.
In her 3 ODIs against England last season, she
scored an unbeaten 74 to guide India to a win in
the opening game. In the next game, she scored a
glorious unbeaten 143 off 111 balls.

SHAFALI VERMA
RH BAT, RA OFFBREAK

Teenage opening bat who has shown she can

string together runs of consistently strong
performances, while looking very comfortable with
the responsibilities of opening the batting. She is
already good but is undoubtedly going to get even
better, which will be amazing to watch.

DEEPTI SHARMA
LH BAT, RA OFFBREAK

Deepti Sharma began as a top order bat, however

she has slipped down the middle-order where her
stubbornness at the crease has been of immense
value to the Indian side. Can prove to be very tough
to get out, while capable of getting good starts
regularly. Can churn out 50s and even has a huge
ton to her name (188 against Ireland in 2017).
