The publication you’re holding is a lot more than

t’s a winter’s night in 1989. A
cricket-loving teenager stirs,
feeling the cold of a limb which has
escaped the warmth of his bedding.
Amid the haze of sleep, his mind
twigs to an opportunity, as a squinted
eye reads the red digits of a clock radio,
indicating it’s nearing 3am. It’s almost

Aussies going?
Despite the cold, his arm reaches to the
floor and blindly feels for the Walkman,
his trusty bedside companion. A finger
fumbles in the dark to find the ‘on’ switch
and a set of thin metal headphones are
set in place.
It’s a well-worn practice these past
weeks, one where the youngster would
regularly continue to lay flat and
casually tune in for a moment or two,
before drifting back to sleep with the
headphones still in place.
But on this night he almost sits bolt ABC outside

2022, he batted 10 hours to save a Test

final innings across the last two days of
the Test. Only Michael Atherton has
batted longer in the final innings of a Test,
in his legendary Johannesburg rearguard

A year earlier, Babar had hit a 49-ball

Centurion. Two weeks after the Karachi
epic, he hit Australia for a 73-ball ODI

is the one which perhaps best marries
the instincts he grew up with, to the
diligently acquired and more practiced
traits of multi-day batting.

has ever exhibited before him. It is a
range that was not always evident, either.
By his 10th Test, for example, he was

had moved up to 35, but he only had a
solitary hundred.

BBL PREVIEW
LESS IS
MORE
The BBL season has been stripped back to just 44
games ahead of schedule. As ABC SPORT’s Simon
Smale writes, Cricket Australia’s attempts to heal
its golden goose has come in the nick of time.
I
t has become something of a cliché
to talk about how much Twenty20
has changed the game of cricket.
Ever since the format’s fledgeling
first season in England all the way back
in 2003 – when it replaced the 40-year-
old 50-over Benson and Hedges Cup
tournament – T20 competitions have
proven to be the golden goose for cricket
boards around the world, culminating in
the extraordinary popularity of the IPL.
It was no different in Australia, where
the state-based Twenty20 Big Bash that
was first contested in 2005 evolved into
the franchise-based eight-team BBL.
From 2011 the BBL has been a feature of
the Australian summer, dwarfing other
summer codes to be played in front of
bumper crowds on TV and in stadiums
throughout the holiday period.
The sport’s biggest names regularly
turned out to supplement a who’s who of
domestic talent to help bolster interest.
International names such as New
Zealand’s Brendon McCullum; West
Indians Kieran Pollard, Dwayne Bravo,
Chris Gayle; South Africa’s Herschelle
Gibbs as well as England’s World Cup-
winning skippers Paul Collingwood, Jos
Buttler and Eoin Morgan, who joined the
