A. Recall of Lesson

B. Activity

The teacher will divide the class into five


groups. Each group will be given cut out
pictures that depict different situations. After
they assemble the pieces of papers, they will
be instructed to cite descriptions out of the
picture formed. Once finished, they will be
posting their output on the board. The group
activity is only good for ten minutes.
Group 1: Casual

Group 2: Consultative

Group 3: Formal

Group 4: Frozen

Group 5: Intimate

C. Analysis
The teacher will ask questions like:

1. What have you observed in our activity?


2. What are those pictures tell about?
3. What do you think is the importance of those

Types of Communicative Style


Speech style is a communicative style
which portrays how a language is characterized
in terms of Degree of Formality.

1. Casual
This is an informal language used by friends and
peers. Slang, vulgarities and colloquialism, informal
contractions (e.g., ain’t, dunno, gonna) are normal
in this type of speech style. This uses
"group language," Here; nicknames are used
in addressing one another.

Examples:
1. Every conversation with buddies or friend
2. A personal message and personal emails
3. Blogs
4. Tweets
5. Letters to friends
6. Phone calls

2. Consultative
This is used in semi-formal communication, where
sentences tend to be shorter and spontaneous. It
happens in two-way participation. It uses
unplanned speech. This is the normal style for
speaking to strangers or persons who are neither
acquaintances nor friends nor relatives.

Examples:
1. Regular classroom discussions
2. Doctor-patient
3. Lawyer-client
4. Counsellor-client
5. Group discussion
6. Teacher-student
7. Expert-apprentice

3. Formal
Formal speeches are straightforward speeches. It
is used in speaking to large groups and is
impersonal in nature. Speaker must frame whole
sentences ahead before they are delivered. It
avoids slang terminologies and uses formal
English. Language is comparatively rigid and has a
set, agreed-upon vocabulary structured complex
sentences and noun phrases.

4. Corporate meeting

7. Welcome Address
8. Announcements
9. Orations
10. Scholarly books/Articles

4. Frozen
This type of communicative style rarely or never
changes. It is "frozen" in time and content. It is
generally used in a very formal setting. This is the
most formal communicative style for a respectful
situation. It has a fixed and static language and
uses long sentences with a good command of
grammar.

∙ The Lord's Prayer

5. Intimate
This type of communicative style applies
to conversational experiences between
and/or among people who share
intimate relationships. Usually done in private,
this also shows no social boundaries among
the speakers considering their intimacy. This also
employs informal and intimate language.

Examples:
∙ Sharing of secrets between friends
∙ Parents talking about their family goals
∙ Meditation

E. Application

With the same group, the teacher will ask the


students to act out situations anchored to the
different communicative styles which will be
provided by the teacher. They have to make
sure that they are performing the appropriate
communicative styles assigned to their group.
The teacher will give students time to prepare
within ten minutes. Afterwards, they will perform
in front of the class. They will be guided by the
rubrics below.
