Title Page: “The impact of social networks on the life and learning
of students at Phenikaa University”

ABSTRACT: Social networks are like a double-edged sword because if not used
properly, they will negatively affect students' lives and studies. Therefore, this article
studies the social network usage behavior of students at Phenikaa University. From
there, we point out the negative consequences of social networks that have affected
them. Finally, we hope that through the research process, we will be able to identify
the causes and appropriate suggestions and recommendations to promote and promote
the positive aspects as well as overcome and limit the negative aspects to the learning
environment and student life caused by social networks.

I. INTRODUCTION
I.1. Reason for choosing the topic

At the beginning of 2024, Vietnam has 78,44 million Internet users, accounting
about 79% total population. In addition, the number of social network users also
reached 72,7 million, approximately equivalent to 73% of the total population.
Currently, popular social networking applications such as: Facebook, Zalo, Istagram,
Tiktok,… In particular, that have shown that the majority of students use they.

Sharing emotions, updating information, learning, entertaining and connecting

with people are some of the typical benefits of social networks. The strong
development of science and technology appear to be more and more social networking
sites, strongly impacting all areas of human activity and life, especially students.

Besides many benefits, social networks also cause negative thing. User
information is easily stolen by hackers. They will use them to do bad things. Besides,
users cannot avoid negative and false information that tends to disrupt the beliefs and
thinking of students who do not have much experience and cause negative
consequences unpredictable. In particular, there is a part of social networks users who
often actively share personal information, their moments or activities on social
networks. This is a good opportunity for bad guys to follow them. From there, they
easily encounter unnecessary dangers.
Therefore, the topic: “The impact of social networks on the life and learning of
students at Phenikaa University” will be an important contribution in discussing and
pointing out the negative impacts of social networks on students at Phenikaa
University. In particular, the study also offers some solutions in building a culture of
effective social network use to limit those negative.

I.2. Research question

1) How does social networks affect the lives and studies of Phenikaa University
students?
2) What ways are there to minimize the negative effects of social networks?
I.3. Theoretical basis
I.3.1. Concept of social networks

“Social network” is a concept that many researchers in many fields have defined
with many different perspectives and interpretations, but there is no official common
definition.

According to Fitcher's (1957) definition, social networks includes many dyadic

relationships. Each person in the network has contact with at least two other people,
but no one has contact with all other members. Based on that definition, Barry
Wellman defined: "When a computer network connects people, it is a social network”.

Nguyen Thi Le Uyen defined a social network as a website where a person can
connect with many people through sharing personal interests with others such as
location, characteristics, education [11 ]. The author further explains that a social
network was formed when a group of initiators sent messages inviting unfamiliar
people to join and become friends on their website. New members will repeat the
above process and create a large network of links regardless of the geographical space
of the members.

From a sociological perspective, Nguyen Hai Nguyen introduced the concept of

social networks: Social networks are a service that connects members with similar
interests on the Internet together for many different purposes regardless of space and
time. . The author further explains that a social network was formed when a group of
initiators sent messages inviting unfamiliar people to join and become friends on their
website. New members will repeat the above process and create a wide network of
linkslarge regardless of the geographical space of its members.

In short, a social network is an open website in which users can create their own
content to access, connect and interact with people through the unique features of
social networks. Social networks were born to help people connect with each other

In general, each type of social network has special features and functions that it
serves for different purposes and attract a different audience of users. However, they
all provide a platform to connect people with each other, create community and
content sharing.

II. METHODS

This article references the research paper of Tran et al (2023). There are two
main method used here: qualitative research and quantitative research

II.1. Qualitative research

The goal of qualitative research is to select, analyze, and synthesize information

that needs to be researched that finds important factors in determining the causes and
effects of social networks to student life. The methods are carried out as follows:

- General analysis method

- System analysis methods
- Practical assessment
- Discussion, interview and observation methods
II.2. Quantitative research

After conducting qualitative research, the author group conducted quantitative

research quantity to quantify numerically the factors filtered in the qualitative research
part. This method is carried out as follows:
- Create a survey questionnaire: Through qualitative research methods, the authors
built a questionnaire with 15 items. The goal is to determine the impact of social
networks on students' lives and learning in both positive and negative directions.
- Determine survey sample:
 Because the scope of research is at Phenikaa University in the 2022 – 2023, so the
survey sampling group is first-year students at Phenikaa university.
 Based on Phenikaa University's regular university admission results in 2022 to take
samples by study blocks.
- Collect and clean data
- Analyze results: Calculate and evaluate the level of influence of social networks on
students' lives and studies: Statistics, filter survey results, evaluate the level of
influence using charts intuitive to analyze and produce results.
III. RESULTS

III.3.The influence of social media on student life and studying at Phenikaa

University

Table 3.4: Statistics on the impact of social networks on students

Affected aspects Quantity (n) Rate (%)

Health 240 43,6
Psychology 282 50,9
Business 59 10,8
Culture 231 41,8
Time 251 45,5
All of the above aspects 119 21,6
(Reference source: Tran et al, 2023)

According to the survey, the percentage of students who feel their learning is
affected by social media use is 65.5%. This shows that social media can affect the
learning of Phenikaa University students when viewed from a multifaceted perspective
depending on the purpose of using social media in learning. If students know how to
make the right use of it, the influence of social media will be effectively utilized. If the
excessive use of social networks will have the exact opposite effect, it can be negative
in the learning of Phenikaa University students. Spending too much time on social
media can also lead to sleep deprivation and stress, which can affect students' health
and psychological well-being. Students spending too much time during the day on
social media will affect their sleep health. According to a study conducted by the Sleep
Junkie research group on 2,012 samples, the habit of using social media before going
to bed has a significant impact on sleep quality [1].
In addition, the use of social media can also affect other aspects of students'
lives. With rates of 43.6% and 50.9%, respectively, students' health and psychology
can also be affected by social media use. Viewing a lot of unhelpful information on
social media can also affect the cultural aspect of students, such as reducing their
ability to acquire knowledge and reducing their ability to participate in cultural
activities.
However, not all aspects of life are affected by social media. According to the
survey, social media use only affects 10.8% of students' jobs. This suggests that, if
used appropriately, social media may not interfere with students' work activities.
Therefore, in order to use social networks effectively, students should establish
time to use social networks appropriately, avoid spending too much time on social
media and balance between using social media and other academic, cultural, health,
psychological and work activities. In addition, students should also be selective about
information on social networks and not be distracted by unhelpful information.
III.3.1. The impact of social media on students' academic performance
Chart 3.1: The influence of social media on students' academic performance

(Reference source: Tran et al, 2023)

Social media has had a great degree of influence on students' academic

performance. According to the survey data, the use of social media has accumulated
more knowledge and experience for students at the rate of 33%. Social media space
has helped individuals to accumulate learning experiences in a more online
environment, instant messages, blogs, other discussion forums can add to the rich
knowledge in the learning process and search for information of students. This
promotes the learning process, gathering information and knowledge of students.
Education following this trend helps students gain new and rich knowledge,
understand technology, improve learning productivity, teamwork efficiency and other
useful lessons. However, besides the positive side, up to 57% of students surveyed
responded that their academic performance was affected because using social media
takes up a lot of time. This can be explained by the fact that students spend more time
on social networks such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Twitter, instead of
focusing on learning and accumulating knowledge. In addition, there are also some
students (10%) who are not affected by social media use. This shows that social media
can be a useful tool in learning and accumulating knowledge but can also cause
negative effects if used improperly. To achieve good academic results, students should
limit excessive use of social media and choose a reasonable time to use it. In addition,
it is necessary to have a clear study plan and try to stick to it to achieve the best
performance.
Through the survey, we divided into 4 levels of positive influence of social
media on students' learning: minimal impact, medium influence, high impact,
completely affected. 5% of the students surveyed gave minimal impact, 18% medium
impact, 42.2% high impact, and 34.8% total impact. The survey results show that the
use of social media in addition to the negative effects has brought great benefits in
learning.
In addition, with the negative impact of social media on students' learning, we
divided into 5 levels of impact: completely unaffected, minimal impact, medium
influence, high impact, completely affected and obtained the following results: 14.6%
said that completely unaffected, 16.8% said they were low influenced, 22% medium
affected and 46.6% highly affected. Thus, the use of social media affects learning
results, social media reduces learning time and space, and is a cause of distraction in
learning. In fact, due to being too engrossed in social media activities, students forget
their main task is to study, with limited time in the day, if students do not know how to
balance, spending too much time on social media will seriously affect the time spent
studying.
Social media serves as a convenient and popular information source, yet its
impact on students' academic performance is notable. Excessive social media usage
can lead to distraction, hindering students from completing academic tasks effectively.
Moreover, it may divert students towards entertainment activities like watching videos
and gaming, undermining their focus on studies. Such habits can foster unhealthy
behaviors and detachment from real-world learning, influencing academic outcomes
negatively. Nonetheless, when utilized effectively, social media enables students to
access information, engage in online learning, and connect with peers sharing similar
interests. Hence, it is crucial for students to understand proper social media usage to
safeguard their academic performance.
III.3.2. The impact of social media on students' lives.
Table 3.5: Percentage of students with health problems

Health problems Quantity (n) Rate (%)

Eye diseases 213 38,72
Spinal pain, back pain 144 26,2
Psychological problems 381 69,3
(Reference source: Tran et al, 2023)

Based on a survey conducted on a sample of 550 students at Phenikaa University,

health concerns emerge as a significant issue among students. Psychological issues,
including anxiety disorders, depression, stress, and schizophrenia, constitute the
highest proportion at 69.2%, while sleep disorders follow closely at 52.8%. These
issues stem from the pressures of academic studies and other life activities, impacting
students' mental well-being.

Eye-related problems are also prevalent, accounting for 38.8% of cases,

encompassing conditions such as astigmatism, nearsightedness, eye strain, and dry
eyes. Prolonged use of electronic devices, such as computers and smartphones, without
adequate breaks or eye rest, as well as improper screen brightness adjustment, may
contribute to these issues. Additionally, back pain and spinal discomfort affect a
substantial proportion of students, standing at 26%, due to prolonged periods of sitting
or maintaining incorrect postures during study or computer work.

Comparing these findings with the research conducted by Hoang Phu Hung
(2019) on the impact of social media on students at Hanoi University of Home Affairs,
it is evident that the rate of health issues among Phenikaa University students
attributed to social media is higher, contrasting with the minimal 0.2% impact
observed among students at Hanoi University of Home Affairs.[2]

IV.DISCUSSION
IV.1.Aspects influenced by social networks
IV.1.1. General assessment of the use of social networks in the life and study
of students at Phenikaa University.
Social media is undeniably a valuable resource for students, offering easy access
to information. However, its influence on academic performance cannot be
overlooked. Excessive use often leads to distraction, diverting students' focus from
their studies to entertainment activities. This shift can foster unhealthy habits and
disconnect students from their real-world learning experiences, negatively impacting
their academic achievements. Yet, when utilized wisely, social media can enhance
learning by providing access to educational content and facilitating connections with
peers who share similar interests.
Our research confirms the significant impact of social media on students'
academic and personal lives. While it offers avenues for information seeking and
socializing, it also poses risks. Students may fall into the trap of spending excessive
time on social platforms, reducing their productivity and analytical abilities. Moreover,
addiction to online gaming and social updates can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to
fatigue and compromised health.
These health issues can have profound effects on students' ability to concentrate
and perform academically. To address these challenges, students should prioritize self-
care by maintaining a balanced lifestyle, seeking adequate rest, and adopting effective
time management strategies. Seeking timely medical assistance for any health
concerns is also crucial.
Comparing our findings with similar studies, such as the research by Nguyen
Lan, reveals common trends in students' social media usage patterns. Many students
spend significant amounts of time on social platforms, for socializing and information
gathering, often without specific location constraints.
To excel academically in the digital age, students must learn to manage their
social media usage effectively. Seeking reliable information, engaging in meaningful
interactions, and setting boundaries between study and leisure time are essential
practices. Universities can support students in this endeavor by providing educational
programs focused on digital literacy and time management. Additionally,
implementing campus policies to regulate social media usage can promote a healthier
learning environment.
In conclusion, while social media offers numerous benefits, its proper utilization
is key to mitigating its negative impacts on students' academic and personal lives.
Through informed decision-making and proactive measures, students can harness the
potential of social media to enhance their learning outcomes and overall well-being.
IV.1.2. General assessment of the use of social networks in the life and study
of students at Phenikaa University.
In evaluating the role of social networks in the lives and academic pursuits of
Phenikaa University students, it is evident that while these platforms serve as
convenient hubs for information exchange, their impact on academic performance is
considerable. Excessive use often leads to distractions, diverting students' attention
from their studies and toward leisure activities like video consumption and gaming.
This shift can foster detrimental habits and detach students from their educational
pursuits, impacting their academic outcomes.
However, when employed judiciously, social media offers avenues for
information access, online learning, and peer interaction, fostering academic growth
and personal development. Despite these benefits, the negative ramifications of social
media use cannot be ignored. Students may find themselves succumbing to time
wastage and dependency on these platforms, diminishing their productivity and
analytical capabilities. Moreover, the proliferation of misinformation on social media
can distort students' perspectives and impede their critical thinking abilities.
Furthermore, excessive engagement with social media, particularly through
gaming, chats, and constant updates, can disrupt students' sleep patterns, leading to
fatigue and compromised health. These health concerns, if left unchecked, can
severely impact students' concentration and overall academic performance.
Comparative analysis with similar studies, such as the research conducted by
Nguyen Lan Nguyen, underscores the universality of high social media usage among
students. The prevalence of purposes like information seeking, socializing, and
networking is consistent, with a significant portion of students dedicating extensive
time to these activities daily.
To navigate the challenges posed by social media, students must prioritize
effective time management and cultivate a balanced lifestyle. Seeking reliable
information, engaging in meaningful interactions, and establishing clear boundaries
between study and leisure time are essential strategies for optimizing academic
performance.
Institutional interventions, such as educational programs focused on digital
literacy and time management, can further support students in navigating the
complexities of social media. Additionally, implementing campus-wide regulations to
govern social media activity can promote a healthier learning environment conducive
to academic success.
In conclusion, while social media presents opportunities for learning and growth,
it's prudent utilization is paramount. By adopting strategic measures and fostering a
culture of responsible usage, students can harness the potential of social media to
enhance their academic pursuits and personal development in the digital era.
IV.2.Causes of social media impact on students

The effects of social media on students have been widely researched. Here are
some common reasons why social networks negatively affect students:

Time spent: Students often spend a lot of time on social networks, which affects
their studies and other work. This affects students' schedule management habits, life
rhythms and biological hours are disrupted, which is unhealthy for children's lifestyles.

Social pressure: Social networks create pressure in terms of self-expression,

number of likes, comments and followers. In addition, social networks are also diverse
in many fields of information, social network users often follow the majority trend. If a
situation occurs online, there will often be many conflicting opinions, thereby putting
pressure on students to be exposed to negative emotions and malicious comments,
creating a feeling of discomfort when communicating online. network.

Uncensored sources of information: Social networks contain a lot of information

without official sources, which can cause confusion or influence students' decisions.
Information on social networks often tends to attract interaction through untrue
articles. This is not uncommon on social networking platforms, such news also carries
false thoughts, causing unnecessary misunderstandings.
Psychological impact: Although social media allows us to connect with many
people, it can also actually make us feel lonely. Seeing other friends posting pictures
of themselves having fun, attending social events, or having a better life can make you
feel isolated. Social networks are often where people share their successes, happiness
and the most beautiful moments in life. This can make you feel pressured to compare
with others and cause a sense of integrity. If you frequently find yourself falling short
of expectations or unable to meet social media standards, you may feel frustrated and
depressed.
IV.3.Solutions
Through research results on the current status of students' use of social networks
at Phenikaa University, we find that the use of social networks plays an extremely
important role in the lives and studies of students. However, not everyone is aware of
how to maximize the benefits and limit the negative aspects. Therefore, we would like
to recomend some solutions as follows:

IV.3.1.On the school side

Schools can increase student education about the use of social networks by
creating workshops, seminars or extracurricular activities. Most of the time, the closer
the topics are to students, the more interested they are. Social networks are one of the
issues that receive a lot of attention in today's society. Through the above activities,
students will have the opportunity to listen to experiences and lessons when using
social networks. They can share their worries as well as the problems they are facing
so that experts can advise them on solutions. Because in the previous section, the
research article mentioned that: social networks address all issues surrounding
students, including health and psychology. This means that it is very serious and if not
resolved, it will cause serious consequences. In short, schools play an important role in
orienting and creating opportunities for students to get acquainted and use social
networks to bring the highest efficiency to students' studies and lives.

IV.3.2.On the family side

The impact of social networks also depends greatly on family interest and
support. Families should pay attention to and encourage their children to participate in
many outside activities such as playing sports, reading books, and club activities to
exercise and improve necessary skills. Students need to be trained regularly and on a
variety of topics to gain interest and develop comprehensively.

Many families use restraining measures against their children. However,

sometimes this will make them intentionally do the opposite. Instead of prohibiting,
parents need to listen and talk with their children to understand them better. From
there, they orient and work with their children to control harmful content on social
networks, choosing healthy information channels for their children to pay attention to.

Many students take advantage of using social networks as a way to relieve stress.
They need a long time after school or overtime to access social networks. But the
problem here is that they use too much time. This will make them even more tired
because the content posted there is really too attractive. Therefore, parents need to
monitor and understand to help them focus more and feel less lonely. Many times,
gathering family and talking to each other more will be a way to help students have
more joy in life. This is also a way for them to be less susceptible to the double-edged
sword called social networks.

IV.3.3.On the student side

First, students need to set goals and limit the time they use social networks
festival. Instead of spending too much time surfing Facebook, Instagram or TikTok,...
they should take control by creating a schedule or using time management
applications: RescueTime, Trello, or Google Calendar... The this application will assist
students in scheduling daily activities, setting time for each task and reminding them to
do it. In addition, these applications also have the function of evaluating work progress
and promoting work efficiency. In short, using social networks should only be a time
to relieve stress. Therefore, students should allocate their time appropriately.

Second, students should only share selected content to post on social networks.
That is valuable content for life and learning. Please share your views and joys. Don't
share personal information. Because social networks are a place to share and find
sympathetic people. As a student, use social media to learn, not to vent. Students
should not engage in offensive, disturbing, or inaccurate content. Be smart social
network users to bring value to your life.

Third, students need to limit contact with electronic devices such as televisions,
phones, computers, laptops, etc. while studying because they can easily cause
distraction and affect learning efficiency. Therefore, students should only study while
going online when they need to find information online to do homework, to avoid
getting distracted and leading to wandering on social networking sites.
Finally, if you feel that social networks are reducing your work and study
efficiency, temporarily remove social networks for a while. It can help you focus more
on work, study and life balance. If you don't want to completely quit social media,
limit the time dedicated to social media and use it more effectively. All studies say that
you should not use social networks for more than 2 hours a day, because you will feel
sluggish, lose focus and balance in life.

V. CONCLUSION
Research on the impact of social networks on life and learning of students at
Phenikaa University has shown that social networks have become an important and
influential factor in the lives and studies of students at the school. Besides the benefits,
social networks also leave limitations and challenges for students. The highlight of this
study is the detailed analysis and evaluation of the effects of social networks on
students' lives and learning, including the impact on time management, learning
outcomes, social interactions and negative effects. From those results, we have come
up with solutions helps students take advantage of the benefits of social networks and
limit negative effects. Solutions include: time management, selecting posted content,
attention from family and direction from school. With the above solutions, we hope to
help students at Phenikaa University and other universities take advantage of the
benefits of social networks and achieve good academic results.
