OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

In this report/session, we will know and learn about Baseball with its history, rules and
gameplay, tactics, gears and equipments and scoring system and mechanics

BASEBALL

- is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of nine players each, with the
goal of scoring runs by hitting a thrown ball and advancing around a series of
bases arranged in a diamond-shaped configuration.
- The game is played on a field with four bases: first, second, and third base, and
home plate.
- The teams take turns batting and fielding, with one team trying to score runs
while the other team tries to prevent runs from being scored

HISTORY BEHIND BASEBALL

● Early Origins: The exact origins of baseball are debated, but it is believed to have
evolved from older bat-and-ball games such as rounders and cricket.
● 19th Century Development: Baseball emerged as a distinct sport in the US in the
early-19th century, with the first recorded game under modern rules in 1846 with
the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP) being one of the earliest.
● Major League Baseball (MLB): Baseball expanded throughout in the 20th
century, with Jackie Robinson becoming the first African American player to play
in MLB in 1947, promoting racial integration.

1
HISTORY OF BASEBALL IN THE PHILIPPINES

● American colonial period: Baseball in the Philippines has a long history dating
back to the American colonial period and gained popularity in the early 20th
century. The Philippine Amateur Baseball Association (PABA) governs the sport,
organizing leagues, tournaments, and developing it at all levels. Notable players
have represented the Philippines in international competitions.

RULES AND GAMEPLAY

GAMEPLAY

OBJECTIVE: Score more runs than the opposing team

● DEFENSE (FIELDING TEAM)

- tries to get the offensive team (batting team) out by fielding the ball and making
plays such as:
- catching fly balls
- tagging runners
- throwing the ball to a base before a runner reaches it
● OFFENSE (BATTING TEAM)
- aims to hit the ball safely and advance around the bases to score runs.
- runs are scored when a player crosses home plate after touching each base
in succession

RULES

- A run is scored when a baserunner successfully touches home plate after touching
each base in succession.
- each team has turn to bat and field.
- if tied, extra innings are played.
- Strikeout occurs when batter receives three strikes before hitting a fair ball.

BASERUNNING

- Stealing bases: Runners steal bases to advance into scoring position.

3
- Hit-and-run: Coaches use these to create scoring opportunities.
- Baserunning aggression: Runners take calculated risks to advance on hits,
tag up on fly balls, and take extra bases.

HITTING APPROACH

- Plate Discipline: Focuses on recognizing pitches and working counts and

also avoids swinging at pitches outside the strike zone.
- Situational Hitting: Adjusts approach based on game situation which
includes hitting behind runners, driving in runners, or sacrificing bunting.

situation.

DEFENSIVE STRATEGY
