HOTEL
EXAMPLE: Images highlighted in bold

A hotel (images of hotels) is a building planned and equipped to temporarily

house people and allow visitors to travel. Hotels provide guests with additional
services such as restaurants , swimming pools and daycare centers . Some
hotels have conference services and encourage groups to host conventions
and meetings at their property.

The 4-star Manor House Hotel (more images) in Castle Combe, Wiltshire ,
England (map) . Built in the 14th century, the hotel has 48 rooms and 1.5 km²
of gardens.

Hotels are normally classified into categories according to the degree of

comfort, positioning, and the level of services they offer. In each country the
following categories can be found:

 Stars (from 1 to 5, )
 Letters (E to A)
 Classes (fourth to first)
 Diamonds and "World Tourism".

These classifications are exclusively national, comfort and level of service may
vary from one country to another for the same category and are based on
objective criteria: room size, bathroom, television, swimming pool, etc.

At a business level, the hotel can be considered a traditional company, the term
"hotel industry" is often used to define the group, its management is based on
the control of production costs and the correct organization of resources (rooms
) available, as well as adequate management of rates, often based on seasonal
changes (high, medium and low) and on negotiation for the accommodation of
groups of people as opposed to individual accommodation.
In recent years, new ways of managing hotels have been appearing based on
techniques known in other areas such as condominium or time sharing, but it is
not yet a generalized system.

It should be added that in many countries spas, resort hotels and so-called
hospital hotels are considered hotels, and the previous classifications of quality,
comfort and services are applied to them.

Name's origin

The word hotel derives from the French hôtel , which originally referred to a
French version of a terraced house, not a place that offered accommodation. In
current usage, hôtel also has the meaning "hotel" and hôtel particulier is used to
refer to the old meaning.

Services and facilities

A hotel room from the Renaissance Hotels chain in the United States .

The basic elements of a hotel room are a bed , a closet , a small table with a
chair next to it, and a sink .

Other features may be a bathroom, a telephone , an alarm clock , a television

and wireless Internet access. In addition, mini-bars (which often include a small
refrigerator) can provide food and drinks, they can also contain snacks and
drinks and what is necessary to prepare tea and coffee .

These basic elements that a hotel must have can be limited (that they have only
these things) or complete (that the room or hotel has more services than these
basic facilities). Depending on what they contain and the quality they provide,
they are classified in most countries with stars or diamonds. There is also a
method of classifying a hotel according to letters (from A to F). These are the
qualities of each of the hotel classification:

Sophisticated, very high quality design and

*****
service.
**** Excellent, high quality design and service.
*** Very good.
** Well.
* Normal.

Medium: The type of service refers to the way in which food and drink are
served to the guest. Different forms of service address the varying needs of
different market segments, and also contribute to the customer's perception of
the quality-price. Among the types of food and beverage service are:

Medium: Table service: Customers are led to the table by a waiter. The order
is taken at the table and the food and drinks are also brought to the table. The
waiters remove the dirty dishes.

Medium: Buffet service: Buffet service is usually associated with special

events and guests come to the buffet table to collect food and drinks.
Weddings, church raffles, and Sunday brunches at some restaurants and clubs
often use buffet service. The distinguishing factor is that the guest has to come
to the buffet table to serve themselves.

Medium: Banquet service: It is very similar to chair service, because the

waiters bring the food to the guest's table. However, catering often requires
food to be transported from a central kitchen. The food can be served on plates
in the central dining area and transported on special hot carts to the dining
room, or it can be transported all at once to a small kitchen near the dining area
and served on plates there.

Medium: Self-service

In self-service, as in the buffet, the customer chooses their food and brings it to
the table. The difference between the two is that in the self-service restaurant
there are employees who serve dishes to customers, while in the buffet the
customer serves themselves freely.

TYPES OF HOTELS
There are disagreements about the neutrality of the point of view of the
current version of this article or section.
On the talk page you can consult the debate about it.

There are hotels of various types depending on their facilities and the
environment in which they are located.

City or urban hotels

Hotel The Westin Palace (Madrid)

These are hotels located in cities, normally in historic centers and commercial
or business areas. They offer all types of levels and are aimed at both tourism
and accommodation for business trips. They are generally functional, and those
aimed at business clients usually have facilities such as conference rooms and
"Business Center".

There is a wide range of hotel establishments spread throughout the cities of

the world, for all tastes and all budgets (or economic capacity of travelers). For
example, in Cali (Colombia) there is the Intercontinental, which is one of the
most important in the city and hosts tourists from all over the world.

Some hotels have been built thinking about those looking to enjoy room
services, haute cuisine, sports facilities and all kinds of details.

Others meet the expectations of those looking to spend a quiet night with
comforts at a lower cost, but with all the attention that tourists deserve, such as
the Aristi hotel in Cali (Colombia), which is an architectural jewel of the city.

The city's hotels are focused on tourists who will stay for a short period, mostly
people traveling for business reasons, athletes attending a tournament, etc.
This has modified the type of offers for travelers; For example, tickets are sold
in a kind of package where for a very favorable price they will have a complete
ticket and accommodation service, e.g. visa plans.

airport hotels

They are located in close proximity to major airports, especially when they are
distant from the urban centers they serve. Its main clientele are passengers in

cost phenomenon.

They are located in the vicinity of urban centers and are aimed at a clientele
that seeks basic services without giving up certain levels of quality.
In Spain there are some international chains such as Ibis from the Accor group
and Express by Holiday Inn. There are also specifically Spanish projects such
as Sidorme Hotels. In Spain there are always types of accommodation that are
typical of this country. These are Hostels, which differ from Hotels by not having
breakfast included and having accommodation availability of 15 to 30 rooms
maximum. Normally in cities they correspond to a single floor of a building. They
are characterized by being economical although some have all the services of
any 2 or 3 star hotel.

for their coasts and the variety of their seas since we find seas of seven colors
like the one It is located in San Andrés Islands ( Colombia ), also the sea of
black sand that we can find in the Colombian Pacific such as in the port of
Buenaventura (Colombia) , Juanchaco and Ladrilleros (Colombia).

Nature hotels

They are located near natural areas of interest such as natural parks, reserves
and protected areas. Stays are usually several days.

Ecological tourism is one of the activities that is growing due to the varieties that
nature and the customs that the inhabitants offer us, although nature is the only
and true source of rest and peace, therefore we have to be very responsible so
as not to cause damage to nature or to the natives of the region. Due to their
rapid growth they have contributed to the development of tourism activity.

Apartment-hotels or Aparthotels

appropriate installation for the conservation, installation and consumption of
food within the accommodation unit. They are classified into five categories

travelers that provide catering and accommodation services.

hotels located in castles, convents, churches and palaces. Among these are the
national paradores in Spain and the pousadas in Portugal.

They are establishments located near roads that provide accommodation in

apartments with a garage and independent entrance for short-term stays. It is
located outside the urban center or at least on the outskirts of them, close to
major communication routes. They usually have road signs indicating road
access, which is usually easy to change direction. This access is usually
independent of the pedestrian. They are normally one- or two-story buildings,
the upper floor of which would be accommodation and the lower floor would be
the garage. They have a low rate of stay or accommodation ranging between 24
hours and 48 hours.

These are generally located on the sides of the roads or in towns surrounding
them, which provide a middle-class service, including parking as mentioned
above.

Transit Hotel or Hotel Accommodation

A transit hotel is called an establishment that rents its rooms, generally, without
necessarily expecting its clients to stay for more than a few hours, especially
because it is favored for sexual encounters . The term is used regardless of the
architecture of the place, since it can be a historic hotel building or a motel
equipped for traffic with cars and parking.

Casino hotels

MGM Grand Hotel Casino in Las Vegas

They are characterized by their gaming offer in their own facilities. The
paradigmatic example of these hotels would be the Las Vegas establishments,
although they exist in many other parts of the world. They tend to be high-class
establishments.

Hotel-clubs

Accommodation that has among its facilities one or several nightclubs of some
importance where people drink and dance and where musical shows are
usually offered. Hotels located next to clubs dedicated to erotic shows where
prostitution is usually practiced are also called this way. The relationship
between these hotels and the prostitutes may not exist formally or they may
have a relationship that is normally informal, some of them even hiding real
brothels .

Sports hotels

They are characterized by their orientation towards the practice of certain sports
either in their facilities or in their surroundings. Examples of these hotels are
those dedicated to diving or surfing next to the sea, those dedicated to fishing

entertainment quality, especially in Sky centers for snow seasons. An example
of these are Valle Nevado, Farellones, La Parva, Termas de Chillán in Chile
and although it is not a Sky center, the Humboldt Hotel located on Cerro Ávila at
an altitude of 2105 meters above sea level ( Caracas , Venezuela ) is a Sky
hotel. 5 stars, currently closed.

Boutique hotels

The term boutique hotels originates from Europe, used to describe hotels with
intimate environments, generally luxurious or unconventional and located in old
houses. These hotels differentiate themselves from large chains by offering
exceptional and personalized accommodation, services and facilities. They are
by general set with a particular theme or style. They are usually smaller than
conventional hotels, with 3 to 30 rooms. Many have dining facilities, bars and
lounges open to the general public. The segment that generates the main
source of income for these hotels is corporate travelers, who place great
importance on privacy, services, attention and luxury. This market segment has
great purchasing power, is not seasonal, very elastic and repetitive. They are
very common in Las Vegas, where each hotel usually has a different
decoration. Within this same category, hotels called small charming hotels can
fit perfectly, normally small hotels, located in unique environments, in buildings
whose architecture has a special interest because they are old buildings
rehabilitated and adapted for such purpose, such as: Farmhouses, Mansions,
Cortijos, Haciendas, Palaces, Monasteries, Mansions, Mansions, etc. In Mexico
there are hotels in most of the country, especially in the Mexican Pacific, the
Marina Banderas Suites boutique hotel located in front of the Nuevo Vallarta
Nayarit Marina www.marinabanderas.com, the gran velas in Nuevo Vallarta
Nayarit, Playa Rosa in Careyes Costa southern Jalisco, in which the tourists
who visit these places are especially of European origin, with a very high
purchasing power.

Another definition of the term is given to us by Germán The Morgans Hotel in

New York was the first proper boutique hotel, giving birth to a new type of
accommodation where the idea of making the guest feel as if they were in their
own home, surrounded by luxuries and details of good taste.

Personalized attention is one of the essential components, the guest is not just
another guest, everything must revolve around them and the goal is to satisfy all
their tastes from the moment they arrive until they leave. Fluent dialogue and
constant guidance are some of the main tasks of the group of people who work
in these establishments.

They are unique hotels with their own personality, unmatched design and
sophistication, where each element is designed for the comfort of those who
visit them. True oases in the city, strategically located in central areas or in
residential areas closest to the main tourist attractions.

Respect for privacy and a calm and friendly atmosphere are two of the main
factors that should characterize a true boutique hotel. A romantic atmosphere
with a special artistic touch is another element that cannot be missing, to make
each stay an experience that remains engraved among the best memories of
each guest.

The size of this type of hotels does not play a decisive role, as long as they
comply with the boutique concept they can have from 4 to 100 rooms,
depending mainly on the region where they are located. In the United States it
is common to find them with up to just over 100 rooms, in Europe however they
are characterized by having no more than 60. And if we talk about Argentina,
generally they do not exceed 30 rooms, although the majority have less than
15.

Boutique hotels are generally located in historic mansions or buildings with

great architectural value, which were reconditioned to provide the passenger
with all the comforts and services of the most exclusive hotels. They offer
modern infrastructure and decorative details typical of the 21st century.

Currently this term is so fashionable that many people use it to profit even
without meeting the necessary elements to be a boutique hotel.

These accommodations are distinguished by several similar names, which often

confuse the public, but which are actually part of the same concept. The so-
called small charming hotels represent the boutique spirit very well, although
they differ mainly in that they are located in the most remote areas of the city
and offer a closer encounter with nature. Luxury does not predominate, but
rather the warmth and intimacy of the environment.

There are also themed boutique hotels in terms of their decoration such as Art
Deco or Zen. They reconstruct the fashion, music and decoration of an era in
the sophistication of the designs in the rooms.

Another branch of boutiques are the so-called design hotels, which are
characterized by offering the latest technological advances available, as well as
avant-garde design.

In Argentina, the concept began to be developed in the 90's, but it was not until
the end of 2001 that it entered into a boom that continues today. There are
already around 200 hotels with these characteristics, which offer an offer with
affordable prices for both foreigners and Argentines. Rates per night start at
U$D 70.00 for a double room and can go up to U$D 700.00 like in the most
exclusive boutique hotels in Patagonia.

In the rest of South America, except Chile, this concept as a brand is not as
developed, although there are accommodations that provide services with
similar characteristics. In Villavicencio Colombia, there is the Punto Apart Hotel
dedicated to the LGTB community, with 7 rooms full of romanticism.

The type of public that consumes a boutique hotel are passengers who no
longer wish to stay in conventional four/five star hotels. They are looking for a
personalized and tailored service, in a luxurious environment but with a climate
that makes them feel at home. It is generally an intellectually refined audience
and many of them are art lovers. It is a young but demanding audience, with
high purchasing power and with several trips as a background, who want to
discover a new destination by interacting with local people. The location is very
determining when choosing one of these hotels, they prioritize the fashionable
and design neighborhoods of the main cities, with easy access to attractions
and located in safe areas.

Business Class or Business Hotels

These types of hotels are characterized by serving people who visit a place for
work or business purposes. There are many hotel chains that specialize in
serving this type of guests, who require very particular services from hotels
such as: Internet in rooms and general areas, business center, room service,
express Check In and Check Out (Term used in hospitality to define the time of
check-in and check-out of a guest, respectively), Bell Boy and Valet Parking.
They have also been designed with the objective of being able to hold
conventions and meetings, consequently they will be equipped with the relevant
complementary services.

seasonal hotels

Also called seasonal hotels. They are hotels with seasonal structures that
operate only during part of the year. A typical example are some hotels located
in the mountains, in ski resorts, and even on the coast.

Rustic hotels

Located on rustic or rural land. They are usually rehabilitated traditional

buildings and sometimes include or are close to agricultural farms.

Vacation Hotels

They are hotels that have been designed to be enjoyed at any time of the year
located on the seafront. There are those with spacious and comfortable rooms,
swimming pools, sports facilities, entertainment programs for people of all ages
and a gastronomy where you can find different international cuisine dishes.
Hotel chains

It would be necessary to make a description of the sector with some data

on its market share.

Hotel chain

Hotel chains are a group of companies grouped together, in the form of vertical
concentration, with different ownership and management formulas whose
purpose is to obtain greater profitability, a situation of power, control and
prestige in the national and international market.

The main characteristics of the different types of chains are:

 Chain made up of its own national hotels.

 International chain made up of its own hotels located in several
countries.
 Chain made up of own hotels and affiliated hotels.
 Chain made up of hotels owned by individuals, but managed and
administered under the signature of a chain.
 Hotel chains managed on a franchise basis.

In accommodation companies and hotels, large businessmen coexist with small

businesses. If these small companies want to get a market share, they must
integrate or group with the large businessmen, this is the axis of the Hotel
Chain, giving rise to inter-business contracts. A) Independent management;
Property. The owner manages the business, makes the decisions and assumes
the risks. The accommodation company is not part of a hotel chain. To mitigate
the inconvenience of competition with large businessmen, these small
companies seek collaborations between independent businessmen without
integrating into chains. They create the Association of Independent Business
Owners and/or join the AAVV reservation systems. B) Independent Grouped or
Integrated Management. Hotel Chain, which encompasses unified management
to a greater or lesser extent, a certain number of accommodation companies
with a more or less extensive territorial distribution.

The independent management formulas are, to a degree of dependency and

with various forms of integration possible, the following:

1) OWNERSHIP: absolute dependence or total integration. The hotel chain is

the owner of the accommodation companies subject to the same management
and direction. (Economic advantage) 2) LEASING; company lease contract.
The Hotel Chain rents the entire accommodation company in full operation. The
owner is the lessor and the Hotel Chain is the lessee, consequently acquiring
possession (not ownership) of the company. Inter-company contract with a
duration of 5 to 10 years.

The Association of Hotel Chains was founded in 1941 in Mexico, then it was
moved to the United States, and where it currently operates is in Spain as:
Association of Spanish Hotel Chains (ACHE).
Hotel organization

Hotels basically offer accommodation and restaurant services, although

depending on the type of hotel they may also offer rental of meeting rooms,
banquets or entertainment services, always paid.

The organization is usually made up of:

Management team

Made up of the director , deputy director and assistant director . Its mission
is to define company policies and objectives. They are also usually in charge of
Human Resources management, marketing, control of safety and quality
systems and in general organizing and coordinating the hotel's activity.

Flooring equipment

It is made up of the housekeeper and the housekeepers. The manager is in

charge of organizing and distributing tasks, controlling orders and stock
(lingerie), planning the schedules of the staff under her charge, collecting
statistical data and communicating. The maids are in charge of cleaning tasks,
checking the rooms and minibars, reporting any incidents found.

Reception team

 The Head of Reception , sometimes acting as deputy director, is

responsible for organizing and controlling the department's tasks,
preparing the schedule of the staff under his charge. He is also in charge
of managing complaints, communicating with other departments,
organizing meetings that are necessary.
 The Receptionists are in charge of customer service, managing the
reception and departure of clients and resolving any questions that may
arise during the stay.

If there is no reservation service of their own, they are also responsible for
managing reservations and cancellations. It is the main contact with the client.

Maintenance crew

Maintenance specialists. It includes both repairs to common facilities and

rooms, which sometimes requires permanent service. It also usually includes
the maintenance of gardens, swimming pools and other sports facilities.

Restaurant

Food and Beverage Manager Supervises the staff under his/her supervision
and is under his/her command: cooks, kitchen assistants, bartenders, bar
assistants, maitre d', sommelier, captain of waiters, hostesses, waiters, hosts,
etc. It is organized like a normal restaurant although it may have a more or less
permanent kitchen service. The collective agreement that governs it is the one
related to lodging and not hospitality.

Conventions

In certain hotels, these events require specialized personnel who are

responsible for booking and organizing everything related to the use of
convention halls and materials to be subcontracted.

In Hotels with reduced accommodation capacity, there is usually a professional

figure called Group and Convention Manager, who is in charge of managing
Group reservations (a minimum of 6 rooms in a 50-room Hotel can be
considered as a group) and the pricing, monitoring, sale and organization of the
different events that can take place in a hotel establishment, which may be a
Congress, a Convention, a Seminar, a Show Room, etc...

In most cases this person usually belongs to the Commercial Department of the
company, but there are companies in which they belong to the Reception
Department since the sale of the event is carried out by Sales Executives. In
this case, the Groups and Conventions Manager is in charge of organizing the
event once the sale is closed.

Animation

The entertainers are in charge of organizing the activities necessary to entertain

the guests. This includes the organization of activities and parties, taking charge
of the conditioning of the facilities and the management of subcontracting other
companies if necessary.

commercial department

Develop marketing mechanisms and policies in all areas of the hotel to have
greater income.

Group of people who make up a work team whose mission is to define the
commercial strategy in order to optimize sales and consequently the production
of the Hotel (search for the highest profitability). The Commercial Department is
directed by the Commercial Director, who is the most responsible for the
company in commercial terms since he will be in charge of:

- set prices according to different seasons. (It will try to avoid seasonality with
deseasonalization policies that lead to greater and more distributed occupancy)

- Hire and train the sales team (Sales Executives). The Commercial Director will
make available to his sales representatives a wide variety of Sales Techniques
that, used appropriately, will significantly help achieve the objectives set by
General Management and Commercial Management.
- negotiate and sign collaboration and contracting agreements with Travel
Agencies, Tour Operators, Companies (Incentive Travel), etc...

- attend the different Fairs, Congresses or other types of meetings. The

commercial team has the mission of promoting the brand it represents, trying to
expand the business portfolio with the potential clients it meets during the Fair,
Congress, etc. Fairs (example: Fitur) are the ideal framework for attracting new
clientele, for retaining the loyalty of existing ones and also for studying and
evaluating the various Competitive Company Policies.

- the design of the corporate image of the company (Logo / Slogans, etc.) Once
the "brand" has been designed, it will be in charge of its positioning in the
Tourism Market, carrying out Competition Studies that will help us know the
status of the market in which we wish to enter and to outline our future strategy.
A SWOT Analysis must be carried out, in order to discover our virtues /
strengths / opportunities and our weaknesses / threats. Due to the wide
typological variety of hotel establishments, it is necessary to carry out Market
Segmentation, with the aim of delimiting the type of client we want for our
establishment. In this way, different types of promotions can be carried out
appropriate to the type of client (example: Business Hotel = Hotel not suitable
for End of Year Trips)

famous hotels

Chelsea Hotel in New York

Most world-famous hotels have earned their reputation by tradition, by being a

place where some important event took place, or by people who have
frequented it. This is the case of the Schloss Cecilienhof hotel and museum, in
Potsdam , Germany, where the Potsdam Conference was held during World
War II between the allies Winston Churchill , Harry Truman and Joseph Stalin ,
in 1945 .
Other establishments have given rise to a particular food or drink, such as the
Waldorf=Astoria hotel in New York City, known for the Waldorf salad , or the
Raffles Hotel in Singapore where the Singapore Sling drink or the Singapore
Sling was invented. Hotel Sacher , in Vienna, birthplace of the Sachertorte .

Some hotels have become known to people through popular culture, such as
the Ritz Hotel in London , the Chelsea Hotel in New York , the subject of several
songs. These types of hotels are also frequented by celebrities. Other
establishments with this feature are the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Chateau
Marmont Hotel in California, United States, the George V Hotel in Paris , the
Palazzo Versace in Gold Coast , Australia. But perhaps the most famous hotel
is the Watergate, where a conspiracy was forged against the Democratic Party
in the United States.

be seen on the hotel's official website).
 The largest hotel is the Ambassador City Jomtien resort in Jomtien ,
Thailand , with 5,100 rooms. It is a complex made up of different
buildings, but the exact number of rooms has not been independently
verified. In 2000, the First World Hotel in Genting Highlands, Malaysia ,
announced that it was developing a 6,300-room hotel complex, however,
only about 3,000 rooms have been built and open to the public.
 The largest hotel, without being a complex of dispersed buildings, is the
MGM Grand Las Vegas hotel, in Las Vegas , United States, with 5,005
rooms.
 According to the Guinness Book of Records , the oldest hotel still in
operation is the Hoshi Ryokan , in Awazu, Japan , opened in 717 BC. c
 The smallest hotel in the world, according to the Guinness Book of
Records , is the Punta Grande hotel, and it is located on the small
Canary island of El Hierro . The built area of this establishment is 600
square meters and its height rises to nine meters. The room offering is
made up of only four rooms and due to its proximity to the sea, it allows
fishing from some of them.

experience of the natural world around you. With a design that respects the
environment and is in harmony with the landscape and cultural setting of the
area, an ecolodge is constructed using natural and locally produced building
materials. It ideally relies on solar or alternative energies, recycles the waste
and wastewater it generates, serves locally grown and produced foods and
usually donates part of its profit to local conservation efforts. With a design

Ecolodge features and ecolodging

An ecolodge can be understood in terms of six main features: location and

resource protection; natural and cultural attractions; facilities; capacity;
activities; and general atmosphere. An ecolodge can be understood in terms

Facilities - an ecolodge is recognized by distinct design features that are

intended primarily to blend in with the natural environment. Services - An
ecolodge is recognized for different design features that have as their main

requires holistic, ecologically based strategies to create projects that do not
alter existing site systems, such as plant and animal communities, soils and
hydrology -- but instead restore these systems if required. Sustainable site
