UNIT I - ELEMENTS OF SCIENTIFIC METHOD 12 Hrs
Research-purpose, relevance and scope, Generalization and Transferability of research data; Objectivity and
value-neutrality in scientific research; ethical dilemmas in Research. Types of Research- basic, applied,
strategic, anticipatory and adaptive research; historical, descriptive and experimental research, Qualitative and
Quantitative research methods, Experimental and ex-post facto approaches, survey research, action research,
participatory research, case study method, content analysis

UNIT II - STEPS INVOLVED IN RESEARCH PROCESS 12 Hrs


Identifying and defining researchable problems, Formulation of research objectives; Hypothesis- meaning,
types, development of hypothesis and its testing; constructs, Nature, types of variables ;Types and levels of
measurements; Types of reliability and validity and their measurement

UNIT III - METHODS OF OBSERVATION AND DATA COLLECTION FOR RESEARCH 12Hrs
Selection of appropriate tools for analysis of research data; Formats of research report -writing
thesis/dissertation, research articles-abstracts, literature review materials and methods, results and discussion
summary and references

UNIT IV - COMPUTATIONAL METHODS 12 Hrs


Computer and web based tools and resources for research Data Analysis; Statistical methods: Measures of
central tendency and dispersal ;probability distributions (Binomial, Poisson and normal);Sampling
distribution; difference between parametric and non-parametric statistics, confidence interval ;errors; levels of
significance; regression and correlation ;t-test; analysis of variance;X2 test ; basic introduction to Multivariate
statistics etc.;

UNIT-V - TEACHING TECHNOLOGY 12 Hrs


Meaning, concept and scope; Instructional design: Objective based Skill based Lecture, Seminar, Symposium,
Project approach and Workshop, Electronic media in Education, Instructional media: concept, selection, Use

Systems¸ Grid-Connected System Sizing, PV Stand-Alone Systems – MPPT Tracking - off grid systems
and scope for inclusive growth of rural India.

UNIT 2 WIND ENERGY 12 Hrs


Wind measurements, Wind speed and power relation, wind distribution and wind speed predictions. Wind
Turbine system components, Types of Turbine, Basics of Wind turbine generator design, Choice of
generators, electrical load matching, power control, Effect of wind speed variations, tower height and its
effect, Variable speed operation, maximum power operation, control systems, system design features, stand
alone and grid connected operation ,Indian electrical Grid code systems (IEGCS)

UNIT 3 EFFECTS ON POWER SYSTEMS 12 Hrs


Biomass – various resources, energy contents, technological advancements, conversion of biomass in other
form of energy – solid, liquid and gases. Tidal and wave energy, Geothermal and Ocean-thermal energy
conversion (OTEC) systems – schemes, feasibility and viability. Fuel cell- types and operating
characteristics, power curve, efficiency, energy output of fuel cell.

UNIT 4 GRID INTEGRATION 12 Hrs


Concept of micro gird, formation of micro grid and economics hybrid with fuel cell, solar-wind, wind –
hydro systems, mode controller, load sharing, system sizing. Grid integration with the system: Interface
requirements, Stable operation, Transient-safety, Operating limits of voltage, frequency, stability margin,
energy storage, and load scheduling.

UNIT 5 SMART GRID 12 Hrs


Concept of Smart Grid, Definitions, Need and Functions of Smart Grid, Opportunities & Barriers of Smart
Grid, Concept of Resilient & Self-Healing Grid, Present development & International policies in Smart
Grid. Smart Grid Technologies: Introduction to Smart Meters, Real Time Pricing, Smart Appliances,
Outage Management System (OMS), Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV), Vehicle to Grid, Smart
Sensors, Home & Building Automation.

Introduction to philosophy: definition, nature and scope, concept, branches – Ethics: definition, moral
philosophy, nature of moral judgements and reactions.

RPE 02: SCIENTIFIC CONDUCT 5 Hrs


Ethics with respect to science and research – Intellectual honesty and research integrity – Scientific
misconducts: Falsification, Fabrication and Plagiarism (FFP) – Redundant publications: duplicate and
overlapping publications, salami slicing – Selective reporting and misrepresentation of data.

RPE 03: PUBLICATION ETHICS 7 Hrs


Publication ethics: definition, introduction and importance – Best practices / standards setting intiatives and
guidelines: COPE, WAME, etc. – Conflicts of interest – Publication misconduct: definition, concept, problems
that leads to unethical behavior and vice versa, types – Violation of publication ethics, authorship and
contributorship – Identification of publication misconduct, complaints and appeals – Predatory publishers and
journals.

self-archiving policies – Software tool to identify predatory publications developed by SPPU – Journal

Subject specific ethical issues, FFP, authorship – Conflicts of interest – Complaints and appeals:
examples and fraud from India and abroad.

Use of plagiarism software like Turnitin, Urkund and other open source software tools.
