Discussion Questions
• Do you ever want to stay in bed? Who makes you get up?
• Why does San say the room is a mess? (Things are all over
the floor.)
• Why do you think San helps Ren?
• Why do you think Ren likes to keep things, even though they
are broken?

Exploring the Story

• San suggests that Ren get rid of several things: jet, net,
vest, nest, hen, pen. Write down those words. They all have
the short e vowel sound. Ask this question: Should a jet be
in a bed? (No!) Should a net be in a bed? (No!) Continue
through the list. Ask children if they can think of other things
that should not be in a bed. (They do not need to have the
short e vowel sound.)

• Some children may have a pet, another word with the

sound of short vowel e. Ask children what pet they would
like to have in their bed? Most may say a dog or a cat. Ask
children what kind of bed a bird has (a nest), a bear (a den), a
bee (a hive), a squirrel (a tree), an octopus (the ocean), and so
forth. Have them think of other animals and discuss where
each one sleeps.
