Dissociation Constant of Acetic Acid from Measurements of Electrical
Conductivity

Aim:

This experiment is conducted to determine dissociation constan40of acetic acid by measuring

electrical Conductivity hence molar conductivity

Results:

Molarity of standard NaOH provided/mol dm-3:_____0.1001

Calculation of exact molarity of acetic acid:

Average volume delivered = 0.0207 L
NaOH + CH3COOH  CH3COONa + H2O
Mol ratio 1:1

Moles of NaOH = MNaOH ×VNaOH

=0,1001 M× 0.0207 L
=0.00207 mol

Therefore molarity of CH3COOH =n/V

=0.00207/0.0207
=0.01 M

Calculation of volumes required to prepare dilute acetic acid solutions:

C1V1 =C2V2
0.1V = 0.02 ×100
V=20 mL

C1V1 =C2V2
0.02V = 0.002×100
V =10 mL

C1V1=C2V2
0.002V =0.0002×100
V =10 mL

Discussion:
As acetic acid is a weak acid it does not dissociate Completely
In a solution so it form ionic substance. The conductivity in ionic solution is a result of
movement of ions within the solution. The results shows that Ka and Concentration are
directly proportional to each other as when Concentration decreases Ka also decreases, thus
the formula for Ka proves that. There is a high difference between literature of acetic acid
and Average Ka and this maybe caused maybe by contamination during experiment.

Conclusion:
Ka of this experiment is highly different than that of the literature. This can mean that there

Page 4 of 5
is something went wrong during the experiment. To get appropriate Ka I can repeat the
experiment measuring perfectly not contaminating.
