Module 10 Drug Awareness
Module 10 Drug Awareness
1. Drug Abuse
2. Classification of Commonly Abused Drugs
3. Causes and Effects of Drug Abuse
During the last two decades, drug abuse prevention programs have evolved considerably.
Pharmacological and psychological treatments have also progressively improved. Nevertheless,
preventive and therapeutic action, given the continuous change and complexity of the
phenomenon, is still insufficient. This module introduces some basic concepts in the addictions
field. We review aspects such as the definition of drugs and addictive behavior, consumption
patterns and the current status of the problem. Also presented are the criteria used to determine
whether consumption or abuse of a substance is taking place. Finally, we review the main
individual risk factors that favor substance consumption and integrate them into a
comprehensive model.

physical, psychological and social. If a few years ago, speaking of the drug problem usually alluded to
illegal drugs such as heroin, currently the concern has focused on the consumption of legal drugs such
as alcohol and tobacco, which are considered the gateway to the consumption of other substances.
Alcohol and tobacco are also considered the gateway to the use of substances whose consumption is
increasing, cannabis and cocaine.
Drug abuse is the willful misuse of either licit or illicit drugs for the purpose of recreation,
perceived necessity or convenience. Drug abuse is a more intense and often willful misuse of drugs
often to the point of addiction. In the eastern world the incidence shows a decline or a static pattern but
the number of drug addicts is still enormous. The major drug of abuse are heroin and marijuana but
designer drugs are shown to be on the increase. The most commonly abused drugs include stimulants,
opioids, and benzodiazepines, antihistamines. Although survey have indicated high rate of illicit and
prescription drugs misuse among college students, few have assessed the negative consequences,
personal concerns, or interest in intervention for drugs use. Drug abuse although regarded as a
personality disorder, may also be seen as worldwide epidemic with evolutionary genetic, physiology
and environmental influences Controlling and affecting human behavior. Globally, the use has reached
all-time high.
Republic Act 9165 otherwise known as Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 was
signed on June 7, 2002, published on June 19, 2002 and took effect on July 4, 2002. The re-
organization of the Philippine Drug Enforcement System was also done and the following agency was
established: The New Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) as the policy and strategy formulating body
and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) as its implementing arm.
