President and Board Greetings

As Mother Seton Academy completes its second year at its Greenmount Avenue home, we stand in awe of how much has been accomplished over the years. To remind us of how far we have come, on special occasions we display a picture of the six founding members of our school to remind all of us of the vision they had and the risks they took to make others aware of the need for providing a tuition-free Catholic School education for children of underserved neighborhoods in our city. Because of their vision, six religious communities have remained deeply committed to our school through their presence, support and belief in our mission. During the past school year, our dedicated teachers enabled our students to make significant academic progress in mathematics, science, social studies and reading as measured in our standardized test scores. Art, music and the opportunity for field trips broadened their experiences. Community service stretched them to look beyond their own needs and become more aware of the needs of others. Parents attended workshops which provided tools for enrichment and support. Volunteers contributed additional services to the school and students. We welcomed new board members Lisa Stromberg, Patrick Mutch, and Sister Ellen Maroney, IHM. Our 2010-2011 school year was a busy and productive year. As we develop channels of communication to assure ongoing contact with our alumni and former graduates who are now in high school or college, we look with gratitude to those high schools that have opened their doors and their hearts to embrace our students. They continue to provide quality education for MSAs students who come from our middle school environment to their high school campuses. Their support and scholarships have enabled so many of our students to become successful citizens in our world. Although faced with a challenging economy, through your generosity we were able to meet our financial goals this past year. We were also able to increase our scholarship sponsors and our student enrollment. In addition, new after school clubs have been added to enhance our program. Our Board of Members and Board of Directors remain strong in their leadership and continue to build on the vision of those founding members who believed that every child should have the opportunity to not only have an excellent education but a Catholic education as well. Thank you for being generous partners as we continue this vision and guide our students into the future. Sincerely, Sr. Charmaine Krohe, SSND School President Bro. Frank ODonnell, SM, JD Board President

A Peaceful Time to Reflect and Grow

One of the core values at Mother Seton Academy is to provide an environment that offers our students the opportunity to grow in their faith. Each year our eighth grade class attends a four-day retreat at the Marianist Family Retreat Center in Cape May Point, New Jersey, funded by the generosity of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and the Marianists. These holy days away from the pressures of their everyday life give our students sacred space and time to reflect on their three-year journey at Mother Seton Academy. This May was no exception. The theme of our retreat was Go Out and Make a Difference in Gods World and Mother Seton Academy students had the opportunity to reflect on their future path into high school through prayer experiences and various team-building games. The retreat was also expanded by an extra day, incorporating an oceanography unit led by Sr. Joan Warner, DC, eighth grade teacher at Mother Seton Academy with the assistance of the Cape May Nature Center. Sr. Joan explored with the students the discovery of Gods presence at the beach through a variety of scientific experiments. These activities helped all of us to see the magnificence of Gods creation in our midst. Our annual eighth grade retreats serve as an unforgettable experience for our students and reminds them how much they are loved by God.

MSA Graduate Wins with Mt. St. Joe

Five members of Mount St. Joseph High Schools robotics class won first place at the U.S. Naval Academys Underwater Robotic Challenge, and one of those students was Mother Seton Academy graduate Brandon SmithSaxon. News of a former Mother Seton Academy student flourishing at Mount St. Joseph is not a surprise. Brother Jim Kelly, CFX, President and CEO at Mount St. Joseph, was instrumental in founding Mother Seton Academy, and has served as a faithful member of our board of directors for many years. Because of this close relationship, Mount St. Josephs has a history of embracing Mother Seton Academys graduates, and fostering our young mens spiritual and academic success in high school. This strong educational foundation has continued to serve Brandon well. The Mount St. Joseph Robotics Class students were in third place after the preliminary speed trials at the competition. This entitled the Mount St. Joseph team to advance to the cap the well state championship where they were pitted against eight other Maryland schools. In the simulated oil spill, the Mount St. Joseph students had to pick up the well cap of a simulated leaking oil well eight feet under the water, and maneuver it onto the well. The lid had to stay on the well so that the well stayed capped. Brandon helped bring the team to an overall first place time of one minute and 44 seconds beating out 96 other Maryland teams by close to a minute or more. Congratulations to Mother Seton Academy Alum Brandon Smith-Saxon and Mount St. Joseph!

My Avatar
Beginning this past March, some special creatures were springing up at Mother Seton Academy. In collaboration with an internship class from the Maryland Institute of Art (MICA), a group of sixth and seventh grade girls from Mother Seton Academy participated in an afterschool program of art and community building. Working with art educators from both schools, the interns designed and implemented a program for adolescent girls to investigate their own behavioral characteristics and personality traits as both a by-product of and contributor to their communities. Calling the project My Avatar, students worked through experimental and reflective processes that led to their creations. First, the students identified animals that represented aspects of their own behavioral characteristics. Then, after experimenting with recyclable materials, students brought their ideas to form in a paper mch sculpture that acted as their avatar. Next, they applied paint colors and patterns on their sculptures to represent their inner landscapes, again symbolic of their personality traits. Photographs of their finished avatars were collaged into two-dimensional landscapes illustrating the relationship between their avatar and its environment. Finally, the students designed the installation of their avatars to represent the community built in the classroom during the afterschool program. In May, interns installed the avatars in MICAs Art Education exhibit area. The program culminated with a trip to see the exhibit. There, students, interns and faculty that had participated in the program had the opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the experience of their wonderful, artistic journey of self-discovery.

Generations of Giving
Sometimes, when you meet a person, you know instantly that this is a good and caring person. George Brown is one such person. George Brown (a.k.a. Uncle Gene) came to Mother Seton Academy by way of our neighbor, St. Anns Parish. He regularly attended mass at St. Anns and was intrigued when the former homeless shelter was sold to a school called Mother Seton Academy. George kept his children Dean, Bob, Aileen and Patrick updated on the progress of the building and the news of the new tenants. When George first toured the completed school in 2009, he was stunned by how impressive the transformation had been, and how wonderful the Mother Seton Academy community was. He met our students and Sr. Charmaine and knew that this was one organization he wanted to help, and wanted his children to help. Three generations of the Brown family on vacation in West Virginia. He asked his children to join him in giving a gift to Mother Seton Academy and they readily agreed. The first gift made to us by George, two of his children and his brother Bob was the purchase of new sweaters for all our students. Since then, the Brown family giving has expanded to include all his children, and they have given faithfully over the years to support Mother Seton Academy, and in honor of their father George. This year, George Brown plans to increase his family giving to include his 21 nieces and nephews. His letter to his extended family asks them to

join him in giving to Mother Seton Academy and says: Picture in your mind polite, well-mannered children all dressed in school uniforms. The boys and girls have firm handshakes while looking into your eyes. I attended an event at the school Poetry Out Loud where eighth grade students recited a poem or part of a poem. I was sitting next to a Mother Seton Academy teacher, and when the students came off the stage and passed by the teacher there were smiles, hugs and pleasant remarks. The students know the teachers and the teachers know the students. On another occasion, at the conclusion of the program the audience was invited to go to the cafeteria for cookies and punch. I was led to the reception by an eighth grade girl, hand in hand, who told me how excited she was

to be going to high school next year, and then onto college. I am writing to ask you to join me and my sons and daughters and their spouses in helping to support this effort. You know the value of a quality education you received one. I am asking you to contribute to a Brown Fund to help Mother Seton Academy continue to provide a quality education for these deserving children. George Brown cares about Mother Seton Academy, and has made that clear not only in his giving to us but in his faithful work at spreading the word among his family and friends. It is this ever-growing tree of giving that will be Mother Seton Academys legacy, and we are grateful to the Brown family and all our generous supporters for continuing to care so thoughtfully for the Mother Seton Academy family.
