ter from Grants attorney Scott E. Combs to City Manager Diana Kollmeyer effective 3 p.m. last Friday, Grant submitted his resignation. The letter refers to Grants involuntary resignation, and that he is being forced to resign. A portion of the letter

from Combs reads, It has unfortunately become clear to us that Mr. Grant cannot acquiesce in the improprieties and the inappropriate actions taking place in the city. Kollmeyer has proposed that Brian Loranger, the assistant Fire Chief for Belleville who had been

on a leave of absence, be appointed to replace Grant. Loranger was the assistant fire chief for the city. The issue will be discussed at Bellevilles City Council meeting at 7:30 tonight. Grant replaced interim chief Bill Emerson in June 2010. Emerson, now

retired, replaced Darwin Loyer as Bellevilles Fire Chief after Loyer resigned to become Van Buren Townships Fire Chief in 2009. Jerry LaVaute is a special writer for Heritage Newspapers. He can be reached at glavaute@gmail. com or call 1-734-740-0062.

The authorization to do this was in a bylaw that elected officials had previously approved. Upon learning that some of their emails had been read by Township Supervisor Paul White, several officials were surprised to learn that the township policy which they had approved was being applied in that manner, and suggested that the policy be clarified to exclude such practices. White said that he had recently read the e-mails

If both initiatives are successful, the state aid would increase revenue to the school district by $200 per student. The plan to consolidate school services must be submitted to the state by June 1. A committee will be formed to develop and to propose specific actions. Schools Superintendent Michael Van Tassel said, Its now a choice. In the future, we will have to do this, referring to the gradually increasing expectations for schools by the state. In a separate, yet related action, the board unanimously adopted a Best Practices Incentive resolution. The state requirement is that a school achieves at least four of five best practices identified by the state. The Van Buren Public Schools had achieved four of the five requirements,
