EVERYONES IN FIRST PLACE: The Padres kick off their 44th season in Major League Baseball with this afternoons opener against the Dodgers...it marks the ninth season at Petco Park...Bud Black leads the Padres in his sixth season as manager, while Josh Byrnes enters his first as the clubs executive vice president/ general manager. TODAYS FESTIVITIES: Todays ceremonies will be emceed by Dick Enberg as the Padres celebrate San Diego, the military and baseball...as part of the festivities, the national anthem will be performed by the Navy Band Southwest, accompanied by the unfurling of the Holiday Bowl Big Flag held by 225 sailors from the USS Peleliu and a flyover by Marine Corps Harrier Jets from Marine Attack Squadron 311 (VMA-311)...the club will also honor longtime radio broadcaster Jerry Coleman, who is celebrating 70 years in baseball and 40 with the Padres this season...prior to the national anthem, 100 Little Leaguers from the San Diego community will line the outfield baselines in celebration of the Padres Youth Baseball Initiative...five Little Leaguers will each be wearing one of the 20 uniform styles represented in the program. OPENING DAY HISTORY: The Padres enter this afternoons game having won four of their last six Opening Day tilts, dating back to 2006...the club stole last years opener from the Cardinals with an 11-inning comefrom-behind win in St. Louis...the Friars are taking on the Dodgers for the eighth time on Opening Day (3-7) but just the third time in San Diego (1-1)...for more information on the Padres Opening Day history, see pages 174-177 in the media guide. HOME, SWEET HOME: Todays game marks the 21st time the Padres have opened the season in San Diego, going 12-8 in those contests...it is the fourth Opening Day game to be hosted at Petco Park, including 2006 (6-1 win vs. SF), 2008 (4-0 win vs. HOU) and 2009 (4-1 loss vs. LAD)...the Padres are 22-21 overall in home openers, including wins in seven of their last 10. ROSTER ROUND-UP: The Padres today announced that they have placed RHP Tim Stauffer on the 15day disabled list and recalled RHP Brad Brach from Triple-A Tucson...in addition, the club announced on Tuesday that they had selected OF Jeremy Hermida from Triple-A Tucson, placed OF Carlos Quentin (right knee) and INF/OF Mark Kotsay (right calf) on the 15-day disabled list and optioned RHP Brad Brach and INF Everth Cabrera to Triple-A Tucson...the clubs Opening Day roster features nine right-handed pitchers, three left-handed pitchers, two catchers, six infielders and five outfielderssix players are making their first appearance on a Major League teams Opening Day roster, including RHPs Anthony Bass and Brad Brach and INFs Yonder Alonso, Jesus Guzman and Andy ParrinoINF Logan Forsythe, who starts the season on the disabled list, is also considered on an Opening Day roster for the first time in his career. START ME UP: Edinson Volquez takes the hill this afternoon, making his second career (and second consecutive) Opening Day start...he was named the Reds Opening Day starter last season, working 6.0 innings in the Reds win over the Brewers...the 2008 All-Star was acquired by the Padres this offseason as part of the trade that sent RHP Mat Latos to CIN in exchange for INF Yonder Alonso, C Yasmani Grandal and RHP Brad Boxberger. 11,000 PADRES: The Little League season has kicked off in San Diego, with players all over the county sporting their new Padres uniforms thanks to the clubs Youth Baseball Initiative...the program has supplied over 11,600 Little Leaguers with Padres uniforms, representing 20 different styles from throughout the clubs history. SPRING TRAINING RECAP: The Padres wrapped up Spring Training with a 20-16 record, ranking fourth in the Cactus League, second among National League clubs and first among their NL West rivals...the club finished the Spring slate by winning 17 of their final 26 games...at the conclusion of Spring Training, the Padres led all NL clubs in runs scored, home runs, batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage... they topped all Major League teams in slugging percentage and runs scored...leading the way were seven players on the current roster who finished the Spring with a batting average of .300 or better, including Nick Hundley (.432), Will Venable (.349), Kyle Blanks (.325), Chris Denorfia (.323), Yonder Alonso (.312), Jesus Guzman (.308) and Jeremy Hermida (.306). WHAT A RELIEF: The eight Padres relievers named to the clubs Opening Day roster combined to go 8-4 with a 3.69 ERA (35 ER/85.1 IP) this Spring...their performance was led by stellar Springs from RHP Andrew Cashner (10.0 IP) and LHP Joe Thatcher (9.1 IP), who each allowed just one run over the course of the Cactus League slate...the two relievers also averaged over a strikeout per inning pitched, with Cashner tallying 16 and Thatcher collecting 10.

PADRES COMMUNITY CALENDAR


Date 4/6 Details Orlando Hudson and the C.A.T.C.H. Foundation (Curing Autism Through Change and Hope) will host 40 autistic youth and their parents (from Pioneer Day School, National Foundation for Autism Research and the Autism Discovery Institute at Rady Childrens Hospital) for a Day at the Park at Petco Park. Activities will include a mobile petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, and games. Orlando Hudson and the C.A.T.C.H. Foundation (Curing Autism Through Change and Hope) will host a pregame meet and greet for 100 autistic children and their families during batting practice. Luke Gregerson and Joe Thatcher will be signing autographs at Park at the Park pregame for Jr. Padres and kids 14 and younger.
