based on gender
identity amounts
to discrimination
By CHRIS JOHNSON
[email protected]
In a historic ruling, the U.S.
Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission has determined that job
bias against employees on the basis
of gender identity amounts to sex
discrimination under existing law.
The determination came about as
part of the resolution of a case led by
the Transgender Law Center on behalf
of Mia Macy, a transgender woman who
allegedly was denied a job as a ballistics
technician at the federal Bureau
of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosivess laboratory in Walnut Creek,
Calif., after she announced she was
transitioning from male to female. The
decision, made unanimously by the
commission on a 5-0 vote, was made
public Monday evening.
[W]e conclude that intentional
discrimination against a transgender
individual because the person
is transgender is, by denition,
discrimination based on ... sex, and
such discrimination therefore violates
Title VII, the decision states.
EEOC is the federal agency that
interprets and enforces federal non-
discrimination laws. Its decision
on transgender workers applies to
both public and private employers
throughout the United States,

Likely GF nominee

presidential primaries on Tuesday as news

his campaign next week.
With Romney poised to wrap up the
Republican nomination and ready to
pivot to the general election contest his
campaign announced the appointment of a
_ay man, Ficharc Grenell, ro serve as narional
security and foreign policy spokesman.
The developments this week
raise questions about whether the Log
Cabin Republicans will endorse Romney
for president, despite his promise to
pursue a federal amendment banning
same-sex marriage, among other anti-
gay positions hes articulated during the
primary season.
The debate over whether to endorse
Romney could prove thorny for Log Cabin.
On one hand, the organization is likely to feel
pressure from its Republican base to throw its
support behind the partys standard-bearer in
the general election. On the other, Romney
has backed anti-gay positions during the
primary season, including support for a U.S.
constitutional amendment banning same-
sex marriage throughout the country and a

The Point Foundation, with ofces
in New York and Los Angeles, boasts
doctors, lawyers, lmmakers and even the
nations youngest openly gay mayor as
alumni of its scholarship program, which
has connected gay college students with
millions in nancial support and a robust
professional network for more than a
decade.
Yet organizers say there remain
countless LGBT students whose
educations are cut short by limited funds
and unsupportive families. And even
as LGBT youth nd more mainstream
acceptance, interest in the innovative
scholarship program has not dissipated.
In fact its growing, say organizers who
will host a May 3 fundraiser meant to
jumpstart donations and boost nancial
support for the expanding pool of
scholars. The event will take place from
6 to 8 p.m. at the Equality Center (1640
Rhode Island Ave. NW). Tickets are $75.
It will feature remarks from founders
Bruce Lindstrom and Carl Strickland, as
well as success stories shared by some of
the Foundations growing crop of alumni.
Organizers are nalizing this years
recipients from a eld of some 2,000
applicants, up about 33 percent from last
year. Scholars will be announced in June.
Were getting a lot more applications
from geographically diverse parts of the
country, also people of color and women,
says Jorge Valencia, Points executive
director and CEO. Were very happy
with that, a lot of that has to do with our
outreach efforts.
The Washington Cornerstone Society
event named for large gift donors
will be one of eight the foundation plans
this year to help support the roughly 75
scholars it sponsors annually.
The amount of each scholarship
uctuates based on the number of
scholars, but ofcials say the funds
help cover everything from tuition to
living expenses for undergraduates and
graduate students at institutions across
the country. The competitive qualication
process involves a 10-part application
and culminates with phone and in-person
interviews.
Each year, Valencia said, the pile of
applications gets thicker.
Thats why these Cornerstone events
are so important, he says. We need to
be able to raise more money to support
these scholars.
The scholarship programs continued
success is bittersweet, however. Valencia
says its evidence that there remains a lot
of work to be done in boosting acceptance
of LGBT youth.
I hope one day there isnt a need for
organizations that serve underserved
communities, says Valencia, explaining
that though scholarships are not limited
to scholars who face rejection from their
families, those students still comprise
many recipients. The opposition is
ghting even harder to make these young

With Paul Wharton, its usually about the hair. He calls to answer a few
follow-up questions from the salon. It comes up repeatedly in conversation
and anytime you see him in photos, on TV or in person its obvious his
abundant coiffure is never an afterthought.
So when did it become such a trademark? He says it started as an excuse
when he was a kid.
Ive always said having a bad hair day should be a legitimate reason to miss
school and it really started from me being bullied in school, he says. I actually
want to turn this into a book Ive been working on for a long time. It was never
really about my hair. It was an excuse to try to get to stay home. She never
bought it though. Shed say, Your hair is ne, now get on out the door.
Wharton says he noticed it becoming part of his on-screen persona when he
rst went into professional TV with the MTV show Made in 2003.
I kind of went from curly to straight to curly to straight but I think now Ive
straightened it so much, it wont really go back to curly like it used to. Ive
had too many blow outs, too much coloring over the years. I try it now and
it just gets tangled. I used to have these really great corkscrew curls but Ive
overblown it I guess.
Wharton, a 34-year-old Cleveland native who mostly grew up in the D.C. area,
spent several years in New York working on his career. After Made, he was
a model coach on VH-1s The Agency and also worked on TV Lands Shes
Got the Look, TV Ones MakeoverManor, BETs Who Wore What and, of
course, Bravos Real Housewives of D.C. Look for him now on Sundays at
noon on Channel 50 with Paul Wharton Style, a new series he calls a fashion,
beauty and lifestyle talk show, that debuted this month.
Its evolved into something with a little more of a reality aspect, he says.
We started more by showing the party or whatever the segment was and we
started nding the more interesting stuff was following people around getting
ready for it. We wanted a sense of what my real life is, so its evolved into
more of a lifestyle show.
Wharton spent about seven years in New York but was lured back to D.C. by
family and a former relationship. Hes single now and lives downtown with his
dog, Oscar. Wharton enjoys writing and relaxing with spiritual coaching, yoga,
massages, spas and church. Find him online at paulwhartonstyle.com.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OUT
AND WHO WAS THE HARDEST
PERSON TO TELL?
I came out when I was 19. It was most
difcult to tell my parents. They both
needed some time and I gave them
space. Were all very close and theyre
extremely supportive to this day.
WHOS YOUR LGBT HERO?
My LGBT heroes are the gay people I
see strut down the street with over-the-
top style, unafraid and unapologetic for
being who they are.
WHATS WASHINGTONS BEST
NIGHTSPOT, PAST OR PRESENT?
I like the bartenders and two-for-one
drinks at Number 9 for happy hour, the
eclectic crowd, old school music and
dancing on the couches at Darnells
Lounge on Fridays and the immensely
entertaining Drag Show at Town on
Saturday nights.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING.
My wedding would be ofciated by
my best friend Omarosa, shed also
give me spiritual counseling and advice
on my pre-nuptial agreement (I joke!).
Id like all of my closest friends and
family to surround us at the altar and
for my godmother Rev. Marcia Dyson to
bless our union and give my would-be
husband the side eye so he knows not to
mess up.
WHAT NON-LGBT ISSUE ARE YOU
MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?
Hunger and health care. Im the
ambassador against hunger at Capital
Area Food Bank (capitalareafoodbank.
org).
WHAT HISTORICAL OUTCOME
WOULD YOU CHANGE?
The assassination of Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr.
WHATS BEEN THE MOST
MEMORABLE POP CULTURE
MOMENT OF YOUR LIFETIME?
I was 5 years old when Michael
Jackson performed Billie Jean on
Motowns 25th anniversary show.
ON WHAT DO YOU INSIST?
I insist on taking one day a week for
myself without any obligations or a
schedule to keep. No matter how crazed
I get during the week, I know that Ill
have my day coming up soon.
WHAT WAS YOUR LAST FACEBOOK
POST OR TWEET?
Tweet Rollin to get my hair done then
a photo shoot with @drewxeron and
intrvw with @washingtonblade.
IF YOUR LIFE WERE A BOOK, WHAT
WOULD THE TITLE BE?
Bad Hair Days should be an Excused
Absence from School
IF SCIENCE DISCOVERED A WAY TO
CHANGE SEXUAL ORIENTATION,
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
I would break into the science lab late
at night and pour the evil orientation-
changing formula down the drain. God
made me this way and Im not changing.
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN BEYOND
THE PHYSICAL WORLD?
I believe in love and the healing power
of love.
WHATS YOUR ADVICE FOR LGBT
MOVEMENT LEADERS?
My message would be to not give
up no matter how much you dont feel
heard or appreciated (even by your own
LGBT community). Continue to stand for
something and let your voice be heard
on behalf of the people.
WHAT WOULD YOU WALK ACROSS
HOT COALS FOR?
Thats a long list. My family, my hair
stylist, world peace, large sums of cash
we could be here all day.
WHAT LGBT STEREOTYPE ANNOYS
YOU MOST?
Im most annoyed when Im in a
business meeting and a straight male
executive starts talking in gay street
slang usually, Oh no she didnt or
some other played-out saying while
waving his neck from side to side. When
its time to do business, I like to do
business.
WHATS YOUR FAVORITE LGBT
MOVIE?
The Birdcage is my favorite. Ive
seen it 50 times and still nd it hilarious.
I also liked The Broken Hearts Club,
Milk and Brokeback Mountain.
WHATS THE MOST OVERRATED
SOCIAL CUSTOM?
Saying goodbye to other guests at a
social event is really overrated. I dont
think its necessary to work the room with
100 hellos shaking hands and kissing
babies and then when youre ready to
leave, doing it all over again. When Im
ready to roll, Im out.
WHAT TROPHY OR PRIZE DO YOU
MOST COVET?
My three awards from D.C. Child and
Family Services acknowledging my work
with the Foster Youth program.
WHAT DO YOU WISH YOUD KNOWN
AT 18?
I wish I had known to keep a journal.
Every now and then I have a ash back
to a party, person or amazing experience
and I run over to my desk and write it
down. I feel like Ive had ve lives and
itd be really mind blowing to be able to
look back on them in full detail.
WHY WASHINGTON?
I lived in New York for several years
and still spend a lot of time there. New
York is fabulous but theres no place like
home.

Several LGBT winners
at D.C. regional
theater awards
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Monday nights 28th annual Helen
Hayes Awards had many winners, but the
evenings rst was playwright Marc Acito.
He won the Charles MacArthur Award
for Outstanding New Play or Musical for
his Birds of a Feather, a comedy about
a pair of gay penguins living together in
New Yorks Central Park. Acito, who is gay,
thanked his own longtime partner who
couldnt make the event.
Next up, Michael Baron (also gay) won
Outstanding Director Resident Musical for
his work on A Year with Frog and Toad at
Adventure Theatre. He thanked his partner
whom hed left at home in Oklahoma.
The absentee boyfriend trend soon
ended. When topnotch musical director
Jon Kalbeisch was singled out of
Outstanding Musical Direction in a
Resident Musical, he happily thanked his
date who was seated close to the stage.
Presented by theatreWashington, the
Helen Hayes Awards was co-hosted by
notable local actors Holly Twyford and Felicia
Curry. (In recent years, there had been pairs
of presenters but no designated emcee per
se. The return to hosts is a fun correction).
Twyford, who is gay, and Curry underwent a
half-dozen glamorous costume changes and
traded insider references and gossipy tidbits.
Its exactly what the raucous audience seemed
to want. After all, the Helen Hayes Awards is
primarily a celebration of all that is local theater.
Every April, the awards are handed
out to reward excellence in Washington-
area professional theater. During the
2011 season, 53 theatres produced
192 productions that met eligibility
requirements in the Jan.-Dec. judging
cycle. From these shows, 153 artists,
productions and ensembles from 26
theatres were nominated for awards
and from these nominees, a large
pool of judges carefully selected the
evenings winners.
Longtime Helen Hayes (and now
theatreWashington) honcho Victor
Shargai presented the prestigious Helen
Hayes Tribute (sponsored and awarded
by philanthropist Jaylee Mead) to Kevin
Spacey, in honor of the famous actors
enduring career and advocacy for arts
funding. A two-time Oscar winner
(American Beauty and The Usual
Suspects.), Spacey, who is rumored to
be gay but opts not to publicly discuss his
orientation, is also a man of the theater:
He won a Tony for the in Lost in Yonkers
in 1991 and most recently toured the
world in a Sam Mendes production of
Richard III. He has worked as a director,
screenwriter, producer and singer and is
artistic director at the Old Vic in London.
Spaceys acceptance speech was
the highlight of the night. In about
10 minutes or so, he dropped several
F bombs, did a couple of spot-on
impersonations, waxed nostalgic,
advised on the importance of giving
back and ultimately inspired a house
full of theater folks to live their dreams.
The tribute included a short lm on
Spaceys career, and much to the
audiences surprise and delight a warm
videotaped message from Spacey friend
and fan, President Bill Clinton. Past honorees
include Derek Jacobi, James Earl Jones,
Angela Lansbury, Stephen Sondheim, and
the awards namesake, Helen Hayes.
Other deserving winners included
delightful newcomer Matthew Delorenzo.
He was awarded Outstanding Supporting
Actor Resident Musical for his portrayal
of Warhol superstar Candy Darling
in Studio Theatre 2ndStages Pop!
Michael Bobbitt, Adventure Theatres gay
artistic director accepted the prize for
Outstanding Production Theatre for Young
Audiences on behalf of his companys
charming production of Charlottes
Web, staged by talented gay director
Serge Seiden. The John Aniello Award for
Outstanding Emerging Theater Company
(named in memory of Victor Shargais
theater-loving, late partner) to Faction of
Fools, a performance group rooted in the
Italian Commedia dellArte style currently
in residence at Gallaudet University.

Many singles want
to nd romance, but
appearing too eager can
thwart your efforts
By MEGHANN NOVINSKIE &
KIM ROSENBERG
Its important when searching for love
to not give off a sense of desperation
approaching your search with desperation
is setting yourself up for failure.
Were not judging many of us have
been there. But the way you approach it
can make all the difference.
Its an easy trap to fall into. Many
of us have craved ardently for a good
relationship and felt like all our friends
are joined up. But this is one time where
drastic situations should not call for
drastic measures. Think about why you
feel you need someone so badly. Is there
a void youre trying to ll? Do you really
want to be in a committed relationship
or are you just looking to t someone
into the ideal mold of a relationship you
so badly crave? If so, this is the wrong
reason to be looking.
Even if youre not feeling desperate,
navigating the waters of dating is
challenging. You may not realize that
the look on your face might be the
puppy dog look, which few people
nd attractive. Hitting the bar or LGBT
networking circuit with this look usually
turns potential daters into missed
opportunities. Some more immature
singles might go as far as to try and
sabotage friends relationships so they
arent the only one single, and again,
work against their true goal of nding
a mate.
Heres the scenario: You start cruising
the bar, looking for that special someone,
who might be attractive or pay you a
couple minutes of attention. From an
outside perspective, its a bit creepy
seeing someone lurking around every
corner, checking out every well-dressed
lady/gent. You nally see someone who
catches your eye. What happens when
you actually approach him? The look of
desperation shows on our face and in
your mannerisms not cute. Do you
slur your words because you are drunk,
perhaps self-medicating and feeling
sorry for yourself? Hopefully not, but
unfortunately many have made this
mistake. Take a deep breath, relax and
reevaluate your dating goals to which
extent are you going to nd a serious
relationship? Timing has a lot to do with
dating. Be proactive and do something
different if the bar scene hasnt worked
for you yet, it certainly wont now.
Maybe you arent the bar scene type, so
take it to the next level and begin dating
online. This can be time consuming for
most professionals, but writing how
amazing you are and describing your
positive qualities on paper might be
a good condence boost. Desperate
singles might write a prole about how
they are a hopeless romantic or are the
type to love the little things in life, but
this can read like a cry for help. Selling
yourself online is very hard for many
people to do. Solution? Have friends
help write your online dating prole.
They know you best and can describe you
from a genuine perspective. Too shy to
ask a friend for help? We know of a few
agencies that will assist you in writing an
online prole for you.
If you think you might be desperate
in your relationship search and are
considering hiring a matchmaker or
personal dating coach, there are a few
things to consider rst. For starters, why
are you feeling desperate? What is your
true level of self-condence? Why is a
relationship important to you? Modeling
your own goals after what friends or family
want for you may not be the right path.
Break down your true goals and feelings
about your future relationship with your
dating coach. Any professional in our
industry understands how hard dating can
be, so be direct and open and dont put
up a tough front just to appear that you
dont need help. We want nothing more
than for you to succeed but we cant help
you reach your goals without honesty and
true self-evaluation.
As matchmakers and being in the
business of helping people fall in love, we
know that unless you are ready to let go of
control and be open to experiencing the
process in mature dating, you wont be
successful. Everyone wants to nd love,
but we have been doing this long enough
to know that desperate daters are usually
the people who will take much longer to
nd their special someone.
A good rst step in getting over your
desperation is not to point ngers at
everyone else because you are single.
You cant love someone else if you dont
love yourself. Self-condence is a very
attractive quality. Desperation screams
insecurity. Step up to the plate, take a look
in the mirror and see if you are ready to do
the work to meet that special someone.

THE GALE STORM TEAM
703.301.1258 301.575.133
Well almost; local gay
sports teams have bounty
of spring activities planned
By KEVIN MAJOROS
Earlier this month, 33 local LGBT sports
teams gathered at Room & Board on
14th Street for Team D.C.s sportsfest. In
addition to long time mainstays such as
the D.C. Frontrunners and the Federal
Triangles Soccer Club, there were some
newer clubs making their presence known
on the LGBT sports scene.
The D.C. Cherry Bombs are a recently
formed LGBT friendly womens ag football
team that hopes to compete on a local and
national level. The group will compete at a
tournament in Maryland next month and
is hoping to put a team together for the
womens division of the Gay Super Bowl
in Denver in September. Practices are at
Garrison Elementary School on Saturdays
at 11 a.m. They can be found on Facebook
at D.C. Cherry Bombs.
The predominately straight group
D.C. Triathlon Club was at Sportsfest
to encourage members of the LGBT
community to join them in training and
competing in triathlons. The group recently
hosted a happy hour at MOVA with more
planned. The group offers a large variety of
workout opportunities and members can
get discounts from several local retailers.
More information is at dctriclub.org.
Ultimate Out is a LGBT-friendly coed
Ultimate Frisbee team that meets twice
weekly. One night is reserved for league
play in the Washington Area Frisbee Club
recreational league. The other meet-up is
for pick up play with athletes of all skill
levels welcome to join. Write the group
at [email protected] for more
information.
The Washington Wetskins water polo
team is the longest running, continuously
operating LGBT water polo team in
the nation. Its members practice on
Mondays and Wednesdays at the Tacoma
Recreation Center from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
All skill levels are welcome and they can
be reached at wetskins.org.
Charm City Volleyball hosts social
play on Wednesdays at the Mt. Royal
Recreational Center in Baltimore from
6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sundays are reserved
for competitive play, scrimmages and
team practices at the Volleyball House in
Elkridge, Md., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This weekend, starting on Saturday
morning, the group will host the 27th
annual Charm City Invitational at the
Volleyball House where 40 teams will be
competing in pool play on Saturday and
will return for double elimination play on

FHOTO COURTESY OF TOUCHSTONE GALLERY
people all over the country and all over
the world really feel less than equal, so the
need is just as high as ever before.
For Ashland Johnson, rejection
came not from her family, but from her
employers.
I worked at Morehouse School of
Medicine, my boss found out I was gay
and I was red, says Johnson, who
channeled the messy experience which
eventually involved the American Civil
Liberties Union into a desire to practice
LGBT civil rights law.
Johnson had studied English and
planned on being a professor before
the 2006 incident but soon found herself
looking at law schools and looking
for money. In Point Foundation, she says
she found both nancial support and a
commitment to developing fully rounded
students through leadership training.
I saw they were really more than a
paycheck, says Johnson, who graduated
in 2011 and now works as policy counsel
for the National Center for Lesbian Rights,
in Washington.
Scholars are required to complete
community service projects beneting the
LGBT community; in exchange, Valencia
says they receive support through the
duration of their academic career, training
opportunities and mentors in their eld.
The latter can be invaluable as
young professionals navigate complex
elds, says Daniel ONeill, a 2011-2012
scholarship recipient and aspiring primary
care physician. Through his program
mentor, ONeill says he has expanded
both his knowledge of HIV treatment and
his vision of where medicine can take him.
He plans to spend time working in San
Francisco this year to learn even more
about medical issues largely impacting
gay and lesbian patients.
Theyve accelerated my ability to pay
it forward and help the LGBT community,
ONeill says of the foundation. Theyve
galvanized the passion of mine to
afrm that Im part of this large LGBT
community.
Scholars also gain access to the
foundations large network of prestigious
alumni, including one who epitomizes
Points growing inuence.
Alex Morse, mayor of Holyoke, Mass.,
is the nations youngest openly gay mayor
and a Point Foundation scholar.
The Point Foundation assisted me
nancially as a student at Brown University,
he said in an email. But more importantly,
it introduced me to an intergenerational
network of successful members of the
[LGBT] community from all across the
country. It helped give me the condence I
needed to achieve my goals and set me on
a strong path into the future.

So you have a room in your
house that you just cant keep
warm. Sound familiar? Maybe
your energy bills are too high. In
the summer the top oor is just
too darn hot and you are more
comfortable on the lowest level
of the home.
How do you solve these
common issues? Certainly you
can call a window company or
an air conditioning company,
even an insulation company.
They say you will be more
comfortable and save energy
all at the same time by using
their solutions.
Having been in the home
energy auditing and building
science arena for the last ve
years I have heard it all. Install
this or that and it will save 30
percent; install that or this and
it will save you 50 percent on
your energy bills.
There is an old saying that,
When you are a hammer
everything looks like a nail.
Basically what I have for you will
x all your ills.
In Northern Virginia there are
professional organizations that
perform home energy audits.
Most of these rms are what
you would call solutions-based
organizations. In other words,
they nd out scientically what
the underlying issues in your
home are to cause the home
to be uncomfortable and be
an energy hog. They provide
you with a comprehensive
report and recommended
repairs for your particular home.
The goal of the audit is to give
you a roadmap to follow so you
dont make a decision to spend
money on a product or service
that does not give you the best
results for your money.
So what is an energy audit
and how does it work?

The Home Energy Detective
goes like this. A quick interview
is conducted with you to nd
out what the issues are with
the home. If you have a gas
furnace or gas water heater,
a combustion appliance zone
test will be performed. This is
very important and specialized
equipment is used. After the
appliance test is completed, a
measurement of the home is
done for later calculations. The
auditor will then prepare the
home for a blower door test.
This test will help determine
how leaky the home is. This is
when they will use an infrared
camera and smoke puffers to
nd the hidden comfort issues
and energy losses. After they
conduct the blower door test,
they will take readings from
the equipment and produce a
report for you.
What are the common things
an energy audit will discover?
Duct leakage from the HVAC
system.
Air leakage in and out of the
home.
Poor-performing insulation.
A connection from the
attached garage to the home
where carbon monoxide can
enter the home.
Poorly caulked windows and
doors including interior doors.
Discover the facts.

REAL ESTATE
By TOM DANIEL
Walk, bike or drive on 8th St. S.E., near
Eastern Market and you will see a long
block of homes with old slate turret roofs,
with built-in gutters below and nials, the
decorative metal ornaments, at the peak.
A turret is a small tower that projects
vertically from a building and were origi-
nally castle appendages. These beauti-
ful roofs are most often found on Queen
Anne-style three story homes throughout
the Capitol Hill Historic District. While
distinctive, they also present a challenge
to home-owners needing to repair or re-
place these roofs.
Many of these slate turret roofs are
original and are more than 100 years old.
There are four aspects of these roofs that
must be considered in a holistic way order
to properly assess the situation. A home-
owner and his or her roong advisor must
consider the condition of the slate, the
wood substrate below the slate, the built-
in gutter below the roof (also known as
a water table) and the metal decorative
nial at the peak. One must also deter-
mine the best plan for the work.
Homeowners Joe and Vicki Smith on
8th St. S.E. had an old turret roof, built-in
gutter and nial. They were all originals.
Over the years numerous repairs had
been made to the roof and gutter. They
had been painted with aluminum roong
paint, coated with liquid asphalt, individ-
ual slate pieces had been repaired and
replaced and the slate had been repaired
with other various roong materials. All
the repairs had run their course. The time
was now to consider a long-term solution.
The Smiths chose to go with tradition-
al products. They had recently replaced
their main roof with copper because of
their long-term horizon and chose tra-
ditional natural slate and copper for the
built-in gutter. These products are both
very high quality, long lasting and aes-
thetically appealing.
Once the type of materials was chosen,
the plan of action had to be put in place.
This is difcult work because a roong
contractor cannot just put up a ladder
and go to work. Turret roofs project high
above the roof line and even long, 60-
foot ladders are ineffective to complete
the work. OSHA also has requirements
for these types of projects.
Scaffolding was installed to the front
of the house, which enabled the roofers
to properly do their work. This work also
requires a high level of skill and handi-
work to correctly measure and cut each
piece of slate.
After removing the old slate, gutter
and nial, the exposed wood revealed
signicant water damage that had oc-
curred over the years. This was the start-
ing point on the road to replacement.
Working from the bottom up, the rst
step was to replace damaged lumber
where needed on both the turret and the
gutter. Once this was completed, the new
copper gutter/water table was installed.
Copper will last many years and must
be joined at the seams by a soldering
process in which metal items are joined
together by melting and owing a ller
metal into the joint. Then its time to cut
and nail individual pieces of slate, piece
by piece, onto the wood base of the tur-
ret. Its important to use copper nails for
their long lasting qualities. The last part
of the process is to install a new nial at
the peak. There are many options.
The nished product reminds one of
the historical and traditional signicance of
these Hill homes and transports us to a time
when the Hill was at its origins.
