School looks forward to Project Graduation
By KATHLEEN DUFFY
The Voorhees Sun
As June slowly comes closer,
Eastern Regional High School
seniors are gearing up to enter
the next stage of their lives.
But for many, its not before
going through the traditional
Project Graduation, now in its
19th year at the school.
This year, it will be held on
Wednesday, June 20 at Dave &
Busters at 325 North Columbus
Boulevard in Philadelphia from
11 p.m. to 3:30 a.m.
The cost for students to attend
is $10.
Chairwoman of Project Gradu-
ation for the school Nancy
Farmer said the night would be
filled with fun activities.
Two airbrush tattoo artists will
be coming, and Rocket Entertain-
ment will be on hand to DJ the
night.
The new grads will be able to
sing to bobble-head karaoke
with up to three students together
at a time and receive a DVD to
bring home as a final memory as-
sociated with the school.
Thatll be fun, said Farmer.
There will also be an open pic-
ture booth, she said, plus two
blow up games: Twister and
Rapid Fire.
And, of course, all of the fun
games that they have there.
Games will be free at Project
Graduation, she said.
Finger foods and drinks such
as coffee and tea will be distrib-
uted, too.
The Project Graduation night
doesnt span through the whole
night to avoid sheer exhaustion
on the part of the students. They
are already tired by the time they
arrive, she said, from the experi-
ence of going through the gradua-
tion ceremony earlier in the day.
Transportation, entertain-
ment, prizes and food are provid-
ed. The event is funded by the
work of parent volunteers from
all grades, various fundraisers,
donations, the Voorhees Munici-
pal Alliance and the Eastern Edu-
cational Foundation.
This year, Farmer said, the
Project Graduation committee
has raised $38,000.
The class show in December
brought in the largest contribu-
tion, she said.
Thats a major fundraiser,
she said. That helps fund a great
deal of this.
Is it a concern the project ends
at 3:30 a.m.? No, said Farmer.
Statistically, its a night that a
lot of kids tend to get hurt on the
road from bad decisions, she
said. If anything, they are safer
by attending Project Gradua-
tion.

6 THE VOORHEES SUN MAY 9-15, 2012
Student recommends everyone
read A Long Way Gone
The book A Long Way Gone includes
the story of a young boy by the name of
Ishamel Beah. He and his friends live a
poor life in the poverty-struck town of Mat-
tru Jong in Uganda, Africa.
Ishmael and his group of friends spend
their time enjoying the one and only thing
they have from America, a cassette tape of
the rap group Run DMC.
In the book, Ishmael talks about his love
for music, and how he thinks the rap in-
dustry has changed the way he viewed his
life. He can get lost in the music. He and
his friends live music, dancing and espe-
cially the beats no one else from his village
have heard before.
Already, this book is inspirational.
Coming from nothing, rags and T-shirts,
they somehow find a way to enjoy the life
they were dealt.
At the time, rebel soldiers had taken
over Africa. They have been capturing chil-
dren and using them for warfare, and for
their own personal needs, not worrying
about the boys.
At age 12, in the towns of Sierra Leone,
he was captured by these terrible rebel sol-
diers.
At first, they drugged him, and used him
for many terrible crimes and other horrific
acts.
As a young boy, he was very confused
and angry because of what was happening
at the time. But for an early teenager, he
was very brave and extremely aware of
what he was doing.
When he was 16, he was rescued by
UNICEF, and he started to realize a new
perspective of people and has a new view
of the world, even though he seems to suf-
fer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD).
In my opinion, there is no question this
book needs to be read by everyone, every-
where.
It shows that determination and believ-
ing in yourself can achieve the impossible.
This book also shoes incredible views of
people in other countries, and shows the
truth about what is going on in Africa, and
I think that is something that everyone
needs to be aware of.
This book took place a while ago, but
people still need to know because it contin-
ues to go on even to this day.
I absolutely loved this book, and quite
honestly, have nothing negative to say
about it.
I recommend this book to anyone who
can flip pages and read.

D
o you have an extra $1,300 that
you dont need and wouldnt
mind giving to the govern-
ment? Didnt think so.
But, if you live in New Brunswick,
your household is on the hook for
$1,330.68 when it comes to covering ac-
cumulated sick and vacation time for
public workers, according to the gover-
nors office.
Statewide, the governor estimates
that accumulated sick and vacation
time total more than $825 million on
municipalities books.
Seems excessive. Or, rather, just
plain wrong.
As one of the exercise gurus from
the 80s or 90s said: Stop the insanity.
The Star-Ledger last week had a
great report on how a number of polit-
ical figures stand to cash out hand-
somely when they retire. It also points
out that, while some reform was
passed in 2010 capping new employees
payouts, theres still a lot of political
wrangling going on. The newspaper
reported that the Democrats want to
allow public workers to keep only the
time theyve accumulated, while Gov.
Christie wants to force employees to
use banked time when taking days in
the future, thereby reducing the num-
ber of payable days upon retirement.
For those of us in the private sector,
chances are the decision already has
been made: Were not banking any-
thing. Were lucky to have a job. Were
fighting rising health-care premiums
and the like, while probably not get-
ting much of a raise if any raise at
all.
So, the whole concept of banked
sick pay is foreign to us. Politicians
should take note.
It seems the governor and the De-
mocrats both recognize the larger
problem here, and, in fact, have
worked to address it moving forward
with new employees.
Lets hope that they can reach an
agreement on the details. Taxpayers
are footing some mighty big bills
now and will be in the future.
Sick means sick
Sick days are for when you are sick, not for when you retire
Sick day reform
The governor and Democrats already
have reached an agreement on bene-
fits for new employees. Now they
should be able to work out the details
on the big bills for which taxpayers
are still on the hook.

We have a great police pres-

Parents are able to get the kids

they will find rides if any student

The night is free from drugs

Project Graduation is special
for students, she said, in that its
the last night for students to be to-

A student designed a T-shirt

sent to the printer, and all of the

The compassionate outreach
ministry of St. Andrew the Apos-
tle Catholic Church once again
shows its compassionate care to
brothers and sisters in Eastern
Kentucky whose lives were devas-
tated by the recent tornados
there.
In early March, Eastern Ken-
tucky and other areas were
struck by powerful tornadoes that
left a path of destruction in their
wake.
The parishioners of St. An-
drew the Apostle became aware of
the devastation that occurred
when the Rev. Jim Sichko of St.
Marks parish in Richmond, Ky.,
visited St. Andrews for the annu-
al parish mission. Sichko de-
scribed the horrific destruction
left by the storms and asked the
parishioners of St. Andrew the
Apostle to pray for all those affect-
ed, including his neighboring
faith community, St. Lukes
Church, which had been com-
pletely destroyed by a tornado the
day before his visit.
While Fr. Jim and Msgr.
Marucci were having dinner and
preparing for the last night of the
mission, they received an email
from 13-year-old Danny Moeller,
an eighth-grade confirmation stu-
dent at St. Andrew.
In the email, Danny asked how
he, his fellow eighth-graders and
the parishioners of St. Andrew
might be able to help the tornado
victims of Eastern Kentucky.
Marucci, pastor of St. Andrew
the Apostle, immediately encour-
aged Danny and the compassion-
ate outreach ministry at St. An-
drews, to collaborate together to
determine how the church could
provide assistance to the affected
communities in Eastern Ken-
tucky.
The parish contacted the Rev.
Robert Damron, pastor of St.
Lukes Catholic Church, which
had been completely destroyed by
the tornado and who was strug-
gling to provide necessary sup-
port for his community.
In addition, St. Andrews com-
passionate outreach ministry
also reached out to the Father
Beitings Appalachian Mission
Center, in Louisa, Ky., to assess
the needs of that community as
well.
Although St. Lukes Catholic
Church is a relatively small
parish.
The Rev. Robert Damron states
the parish provides life-sustain-
ing support to the impoverished
surrounding communities.
St. Lukes provides the only
food bank in the entire county
and feeds approximately 50 needy
families each week. St. Lukes
also offers a needed clothing min-
istry that primarily assists young
unwed mothers and the elderly
population.
Their Baby Boutique assists
young mothers by providing
needed baby food, clothing and
other essentials.
With the encouragement of
Marucci and Moeller, the mem-
bers of the compassionate out-
reach ministries will begin or-
ganizing a mission trip to East-
ern Kentucky this summer.
In the meantime, Danny will
coordinate some projects with his
confirmation classmates to raise
monetary donations to support
their brothers and sisters in Ken-
tucky. In collaboration with the
St. Andrew the Apostle Compas-
sionate Outreach Ministry, mone-
tary gifts will be collected later in
May for St. Lukes and The Father
Beiting Appalachian Mission
Center.
The donations will be used to
purchase food for their food bank
and needed clothing for their
clothing ministry.
Volunteers from St. Andrew
the Apostle Church will travel to
the mission center from Aug. 12 to
18 and assist with rebuilding
some of the homes, participate in
clean-up projects, caring for the
children in camps and providing
other support for the devastated
communities.
The mission center is in great
need of skilled workers such as
carpenters, electricians, roofers
and plumbers to do repair work
in homes. Other volunteers are
also needed.
St. Andrews is also sponsoring
a night at the Riversharks, Friday,
June 1 at 7:05 p.m. Come out to
Campbells Field to help raise
money for the victims of torna-
dos in Kentucky. To purchase
tickets log on to www.river-
sharks.com and select River-
sharks Fundraising Program.
Enter StAndrews for the group
code.
If you would like to help, please
contact Chris Parry at
[email protected] or Deacon
Bill Slaven at
[email protected]. If
you would like to communicate
with Danny, please forward your
emails to MsgrMarucci@com-
cast.net, for advance review.
St. Andrew the Apostle Parish
will also be in need of volunteers
to prepare meals for those partici-
pating in the mission trip. Those
remaining at home can also help
by continuing to pray for the dev-
astated Eastern Kentucky com-
munities and for safe journey for
those who will be traveling to
Kentucky this summer.

St. Andrew reaches out to tornado victims
In late March, Rocco Fiorenti-
no played piano at a ribbon-cut-
ting ceremony at Spring Hills
Cherry Hill.
When Alex Markowits, the
owner of eight Spring Hills Sen-
ior Communities, heard Fiorenti-
no play he was really taken with
him.
Markowits happens to be on
the board of HealthCorps, Dr.

place recently at the Waldorf As-
toria and Markowits arranged for
Fiorentino to be one of the per-
formers.
Diane Sawyer and actor
Matthew Modine were honored
that night.
So, the theme was Guardian
Angels and Fiorentino, as their
first angel, performed two songs
on a nine-foot Steinway to open
the dinner program.
He played and sang Its a Won-

When we last met Monsignor
Louis A. Marucci, it was Christ-
mas Eve 2011 and he was prepar-
ing to broadcast a Christmas Eve
Mass as a special request from
local U.S. military soldier serving
in Afghanistan.
NBC 10 Philadelphia partnered
with Marucci and St. Andrew the
Apostle Church in
Voorhees/Gibbsboro, to broad-
cast the Christmas Eve Mass to
military troops stationed around
the world.
People who know Marucci ad-
mire him as someone who consis-
tently puts everyone else's need
before his own.
Now Marucci is embarking on
another mission that will allow
him to continue to minister and
serve others winning a local
hero contest sponsored by the Na-
tional Mobility Awareness Month
with the grand prize of a new
wheelchair accessible van that
will be awarded to the person who
receives the greatest number of
votes from the community.
It was 1987, and Marucci had
just been ordained a priest, vow-
ing to give himself completely to
serve God and his people when
six months later, he was stricken
with Multiple Sclerosis. While
some would get angry and take it
out on others, Marucci chose to
embrace his suffering, and to
offer it for others.
So many would have simply
given up; however he simply con-
tinues to give of himself while re-
maining faithful to his promise.
I never anticipated that suffer-
ing would play such a significant
part of my priestly life, but I have
been blessed with great faith that
has helped me to endure the tri-
als, which have been very severe
throughout the years, he said.
The monsignor has endured
numerous flare-ups of Multiple
Sclerosis; some which have re-
quired hospitalizations lasting
nearly eight months. At times, he
has been ventilator-dependent,
quadriplegic, and survived a
struggle with endocarditis, an in-
fection in his blood that lodged on
to his heart valves.
Today, he has stabilized, but re-
mains wheelchair dependent and
endures a variety of trials related
to secondary symptoms of the
disease.
He often states that his disabili-
ty is both a cross and a crown. It
is a cross because suffering is dif-
ficult; it is a crown because it
taught him the important role of
interdependence beyond inde-
pendence. As a priest, he made a
declaration of dependence upon
God to assist him daily. Everyone
who knows Marucci admires him
because of his faith, zeal for life,
love of God, and his choice to be a
servant leader to others.
Eight months ago, Marucci
was informed the adaptive equip-
ment in his 13-year-old van is no
longer serviceable, and he must
obtain a new adapted van. The
van allows him to continue to
minister to and serve others not
only at St. Andrew the Apostle
Parish but also to those in local
hospitals and area nursing
homes. Imagine the thousands of
others who will also benefit if he
can acquire a new van and con-
tinues to be the man for others
he pledged to be to God 25 years
ago.
Marucci is asking for support
in his quest to win a new adapted
van.
Please help by simply logging
on to www.mobilityawareness-
month.com, click on Local He-
roes, enter Marucci in the
search field, enter promo code
999 and cast your vote for Maruc-
ci.
Voting ends on May 13 and you
may vote once every 24 hours.
Please log on today, cast your
vote and help us win a new adap-
tive van for Marucci so that he
can continue to minister and be a
servant to others.
