EMERALD OF THE EAST Every year between March and October, sun and sea lovers from the world over never fail to make pilgrimage to some of the most beautiful islands in South East Asia. And they are all situated o the coast of Terengganu, an east coast state of Peninsular Malaysia. Sparkling like emerald gems atop a bluish setting, these islands are the worlds most talked about eco-tourism destination. TEXTILES CRAFT SONGKET The origins of the many di erent colourful and traditional textile are lost in antiquity. The art of songket weaving consist of using traditional heirloom to make intricate songket brocade through painstaking weaving with gold or silver threads. Songket is a rich fabric that is worn only on auspicious occasions and used to be the textiles of royalty. It is now the headgear of Sultans, Chief Ministers and the States Cabinet members. BATIK Hand drawn batik is an exquisite and delicate art which requires skill, patience, meticulousness, air and creativity. Batik is intrinsic to the fashion world, be it in cotton or silk or in the making of sarongs, crafts, pareos, shirts, shorts, handbags, purses and even shoes. Terengganu batik shows originality and is not commercialized thus, retaining its price for the quality of the material and the elegance of the designs. SILK Approximately 6 kilometre south of Kuala Terengganu is Sutera Semai-Malaysias pioneer silk weaving centre. It o ers insights into silk production, from the spinning into yarns, to textile weaving and batik printing. You can also see how batik designs are printed producing beautiful shirts, kaftans, scarves, handkerchief, etc. BOAT MAKING Traditional boat builders of Terengganu are famous for their skills, techniques and materials that withstand the test of time. The designs and blueprint are conceptualized from memory and learning skills passed down through generations. The modern touch while maintaining the traditional concepts of intricate details and precision are internationally recognised and continue to be a part of Terengganus rich and vibrant heritage.

TERENGGANU STATE MUSEUM Acclaimed as the largest museum in South East Asia, the Museum houses century old artefacts and artworks of rich and colourful heritage. Located on 27 hectares of land in Bukit Losong, Kuala Terengganu, the complexes itself are an impressive architectural feat, based on the designs of Terengganus old palace. It comprises a Main Museum, a Maritime Museum, a Fisheries Museum, 4 traditional houses and botanic and herb gardens. The Main Museum is built on 16 concrete stilts with galleries showcasing textiles and weaving techniques, traditional weapons, crafts, historical, royal regalias, nature, petroleum development, Islamic arts, new generation and contemporary arts. The other 4 blocks are adjoined, to represent a large family. At the main entrance of the main complex, lays the famous original Batu Bersurat of Terengganu. Visitors from hotels could contact any of the local travel agencies to arrange for a fun Kuala Terengganu Town Tour which includes visit to the State Museum. Or fancy the traditional boat cruise along the Terengganu River that also stops at the State Museum. Ticket counter is available at the Shahbandar Jetty opposite the General Post O ce. Ticket priced at RM5.00 per person. For those wishing to drive themselves to the Museum, they have to take the route to Kampung Losong which is famous for its keropok lekor, a famous local delicacy.
