M
illertons Main Street is flled with character, as
well as characters who have their own individual
views of the world and their town. The artist
pictured above was clearly inspired by the charm
of Main Street, as are many others who live in or
visit this community. One walk around Millerton
and youll want to return to take in the warm and
welcoming place that was, in 2007, chosen as one
of the 10 coolest small towns in America by Arthur
Frommers Budget Travel magazine.
The shops are independently owned, each with
something unique to offer to those who stroll in
while getting to know the town. Theres the coffee
shop, and tea shop, the fully restored diner, a
sporting goods store (where youll also fnd good-
quality cigars) thats more than a century old, a book
and music store, a movie theater, fruit and ice cream
shop, eco store, a locally owned department store
(remember those?), a bustling library, a welcoming
Victorian inn, a weekly farmers market, art galleries
with world-renowned artists, a wide array of
restaurants and much more.
This is a town that is as attractive to live in as it is
to visit. The history of Millerton is rich with tales of
farming life, with deep and solid rural values. It is a
caring community where the citizens support each
other through both good and challenging times.
Read through this guide to fnd out more about
life in Millerton, past and present. Youll fnd more to
like than you imagined, and its guaranteed that youll
fnd something pleasantly unexpected in your own
exploration of this cool, and warm, small town.

At the same time, we dont want
to impose any particular look or
design on the village. We, too, like
the low-key and organic way the
place has evolved over the years,
and we want to help keep it that
way.
One area we have worked on has
been trees. Trees have made such
a difference in the way Millerton
looks and feels. They soften the
streetscape, provide cooling shade
in the summertime and create the
welcoming canopy that encourages
strolling and frames the sidewalks.
Over the years, we have planted a
number of trees up and down Main
Street and on some of the side
streets.
As the result of the freak
snowstorm of last October, we lost

By Christopher Kennan, Townscape President
these has had an impact but its the
mix of these and other factors that
has gone into making Millerton
what it is today.
Residents of Millerton are
proud of their village, happy that
so many people enjoy visiting their
hometown, even if they worry about
what could happen if it became too
popular. For a civic organization like
Townscape, which has been around
in one form or another for the past
decade, this poses a challenge. We
want to contribute to making the
village of Millerton and the town
of North East, which surrounds
it as inviting and attractive as
possible.
People like coming to Millerton.
They like the small-town feel of it,
they like the quirkiness of it, they
like the variety of things to see and
do, the buzz that it seems to have,
and I would argue, they also like
the absence of planned chic.
Millerton is the way it is as the
result of many different factors.
You could point to its history as an
agricultural village, its location on
the Harlem Valley rail line (now the
Rail Trail), the visitor traffc that is
generated by routes 22 and 44, the
fact that it has a three-screen movie
theater, the variety of good places to
eat and shop and the scenic natural
environment around it. Each of

a number of our trees, and many
more were damaged. Townscape
has committed itself to replanting
as many as possible of the lost
trees, and to helping restore some
of the ones that were impacted.
Flowers and plantings are also
critical to the look of any town.
Townscape has been blessed with a
core of dedicated volunteers, most
of them members of our board, who
are knowledgeable about plants,
creative in their sense of design
and determined to make sure that
Millerton presents its best face
every year.
Then, when the seasons change,
the weather gets colder and the
leaves fall, Townscape always
gears up to help Millerton look
appropriately festive for the end-
of-year holidays. With the help

Millerton
of residents and merchants, little
trees magically appear up and
down Main Street. This past year,
Townscape undertook to have
the big evergreen at the foot of
Main Street on Route 22 strung
with lights, from top to bottom, in
celebration of the season.
We have undertaken other
streetscape projects as well. In
2011, Townscape was asked by the
Village Board to help them fnd
a replacement for the ironrailing
in front of the former M&T Bank,
now Gilded Moon Framing. We
spent a lot of time scouring the
region for a blacksmith willing and
able to fabricate an appropriate
replacement something strong
and sturdy enough to last for
decades and attractive without
being overly complicated or fussy.
The result seems to have been
a great success, a real example of
a public-private partnership, and
one that Townscape was proud to
have been involved in and to have
contributed to fnancially.
As we look to the future, we
have plenty of ideas for further
streetscape improvements, from
suggesting ways to make crossing
Main Street safer, to upgrading the
benches in the park by the Veterans
Memorial, from planting more trees
to thinking about how nice it would
be to have sidewalks continue
eastward on Route 22 in the
direction of Lakeville. We welcome
input and suggestions from anyone
and everyone as well as their
fnancial support. And we look
forward to continuing to support
the positive evolution of Millerton
and North East in the months and
years ahead.
Christopher Kennan is a resident
of the town of North East, and
president of Townscape of Millerton

Whats new with the Harlem Valley Rail Trail?
By Dick Hermans
However, the bare fact is that
this section of trail traverses some
fragile wetlands (potentially the
home of the protected bog turtle)
and, therefore, the development
of this section of trail must
accommodate all applicable
environmental restraints.
In plain English, the
development of this section of
trail has been delayed nearly 10
years now as Dutchess County and
the New York State Department
of Environmental Conservation
(DEC) engage each other in a
protracted regulatory minuet.
Another factor delaying the
process is that Dutchess County
became distracted from the
Harlem Valley by developing the
The frst question we get has been for several years, When will
the trail get built between Millerton and Copake? It would
be wonderful if we could simply say this eight-mile section is
coming soon or that construction is imminent.

the Countys focus away from
the problems associated with the

Nevertheless, we have been
assured by new Dutchess County
Executive Marcus Molinaro that
moving forward to complete
the Harlem Valley Rail Trail in
Dutchess County is one of the
highest priorities of his frst (four-
year) term. While we do not yet
have a frm timeline, it seems that
Dutchess County will wrangle
a design plan from DEC after
which funding and construction
contracting can proceed.

Millerton Post 178 originated on
Sept. 29, 1927, when World War I
veterans gathered at the old Mil-

business was election of offcers for

Lloyd Swanson acted as secretary.

By Bernie Silvernail
The American Legion originated in Paris, France in 1919 fol-

men and women from all wars and places where American troops
have been sent since then. Its been around for 93 years.

Some early orders of business

in the Millerton Theater; to fnd
a suitable meeting place; to plan
fundraising activities; the procure-
ment of rifes; drawing up a Memo-
rial Day program; and encouraging
the members wives to establish an
auxiliary (which they did). A year
later, members voted to sponsor
the Millerton Boy Scout troop and
a baseball team, and they also held
card parties and sponsored movies.
Memorial Day in 1930 was held
on a Friday and their Post 178 pro-

Initially, farming was the chief
occupation. The earliest form of
transportation was by steamboat
on the Hudson River, moving
agricultural products and iron
to the cities. With the Industrial
Revolution, major population
centers needed food and raw
materials. Railroads were built to
accommodate this need.
In addition to farming, the land
was rich in lead and iron ore.
Mining became an important
industry. Immigrants from
Ireland, Italy and Germany found
employment on the farms and
in the mines. Forests supplied

the coke needed to fuel the blast
furnaces.
One of the earliest settlements
was in Spencers Corners, just
north of the present village. Several
hamlets sprang up in the area
Irondale to the north, North East
Center and Coleman Station to the
south, Shekomeko to the west.
Sidney G. Miller, civil engineer,
brought the NY & Harlem RR
to Millerton from Dover Plains
and New York City. Town fathers
named the village in his honor at a
ceremony at the Wakeman House
in 1851. Millerton was incorporated
on June 30, 1875.
The Central New England RR
was built connecting Boston to the
east with Poughkeepsie and the
Hudson River to the west. Millerton
quickly became a commercial
and agricultural hub. Successful
merchants from New York moved
their families to summer homes
in the area and Millerton became
a tourist and resort center.
Merchants like John Benedict,
William Eggleston, Arthur Hoag
prospered. Hotels like the Millerton
Hotel and Brick Block were built to
accommodate traveling salesmen.
The Village of Millerton fourished.
Today, Millerton remains as the
commercial center of the Town of
North East.

Boston Corners
By Bernie Silvernail
About as far as you can drive
in Dutchess County, is the
Hamlet of Boston Corners.
Boston Corners started on its
road to respectability around
1853.
It was the time when Massa-
chusetts gave New York state the
1200 acre triangular tract of land
that could not be reached from
Massachusetts unless one traveled
through Connecticut, New York
or by foot or horseback over the
Taconic Range. In 1853, it was a
town of lawlessness, except for
residents who had their own laws
and tried to enforce them.

Fight between James (Yankee)

Morrissey took place Oct. 12,
1853. The fght lasted only about
55 minutes, but it was estimated
that over 5000 sports minded fans
watched the fght. They came by
foot, horseback, riverboat from
the Hudson and rail to view the
fght frsthand. Morrissey won the
disputed decision that day in the
37th round.
John Morrissey went on into
politics and was twice elected
to the U.S. Congress and twice
elected to the Senate. In 1878 he
died in Saratoga Springs at the age
of 47.

Mission cemetery in San Fran-
cisco.
The drawing of the fst fght was
illustrated by the skillful hand of
artist Harold Denison (see page
16) in later years who was a resi-
dent of Boston Corners.
In 1853 there were only about 60
residents that lived there and at a
meeting in a school yard a docu-
ment from the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts was read making
them part of New York State. New
York State did not accept the tract
of land until January of 1855.
Boston Corners, over the
years, has become a respected
farming and shopping community.
At one time it had three railroads,
the Harlem Railroad or New York
Central, the Poughkeepsie &
Eastern Railroad and the Central
New England, all in the Boston
Corners area. It had its own post
offce, a general store, a church, a
milk plant, a hotel, a butcher shop,
a school, a car garage, a bar and a
golf course. Gold was also found
in a farmers feld near the railroad
station.
Boston Corners at one time pro-
duced a high grade of iron ore for
workers at the Copake and Miller-
ton furnaces. In the early 1930s the
area had a C.C. or Conservation
Camp located there, at the C.C.
workers planted trees, took care of
state parks and built roads.
One of Boston Corners famous
residents, Peter Helck, had an
artists studio there. Peter was an
artist, illustrator and author. He
was also a great painter of early
auto cars races. He moved there in
1932, his advertising works were
in about every magazine from
the 1930s to his death in 1988. He

was the author of two books, The
Checkered Flag, and Great Auto
Races. Over a long period of time
he had over two thousand pieces of
art works.
Another book written about
the area in 1938 was called, Hells
Acres, it was about the residents
and a blow hole cave that was
located there.
Boston Corners may have been
so named because it was in a cor-
ner of Massachusetts furthest from
the city of Boston, to this day, 2012,
there is no road over the mountain
into Massachusetts. None of its
stores are there today, but there is
a golf course and the Green River
Trading Post has a gallery there.
Boston Corners, with the com-
pletion of Route 22 bypass, sort of
faded from the passing eye, but it
is still there (though much quieter
than October of 1853.)

This was the year that Millerton
High School won the Harlem Valley
Championship for the frst time in
16 years. It was a time when those
turning out to play basketball would
only number about 20 boys that
were interested, and the Varsity
and J.V. teams needed at least 18
players. It was also a time when one
good player could dominate a game,
but the old M.H.S. had two great
players in Tom Merwin and Sanford
Kaplan.
There were only fve teams in
the Harlem Valley Class D League.
M.H.S. colors were blue and gold.
The 1950 & 1951 M.H.S. Basketball Champs
By Bernie Silvernail
Millerton over the years has had many great sport teams in
baseball, softball and basketball. This article is about one of
them, a Millerton High School (M.H.S.) basketball team, year
1950-1951.
In the Harlem Valley League, there
were Amenia, Dover, Pawling,
Millbrook and Millerton. Millerton
that year also played Great
Barrington, Red Hook, Pine Plains
and Roeliff Jansen. The M.H.S.
record in the league for 1950-1951
was seven wins and one loss.
The starting fve for Millerton
High were Tom Merwin and Sam
Kaplan at forward, Jim Mugler at
center, Jack Silvernale and Carl
Yakubowski at guard. Back up
for the starting fve were Richard
Williams, Charlie Van DeBogart,
Dick Doughty and Jack Clark. Each
player was ready to help out when
called upon by head coach Richard
Watkins. Paul Terni was manager
and Ed McGhee was assistant
manager.
The team lost to Pine Plains
and Red Hook, but they were
Class C schools. Millerton also
beat Mahopac in a Class D
championship game and Great
Barrington in a non-league game.
Tom Merwin was high scorer
for Millerton in almost all games.
Against Dover in a league game he
scored 37 points, and 32 against
Millbrook in league play. For the
year, Tom scored 245 points with a
21 game average. This was a new
school record for M.H.S.
Sam Kaplan, for the year, scored
208 points with a 17 point average
per game and against Millbrook,

Sam scored a game high of 19 points. In
tournament play Tom had a 20 point average and
Sam had an 11 point average per game. Tom and
Sam both broke most M.H.S. school records.
One county sports writer had Tom Merwin
and Sanford Kaplan on the best fve team in the
Harlem League, but Tom was named on most
sports writers lists as one of the best fve in
Dutchess County for the year 1950-1951.
The M.H.S. Varsity Cheerleaders for 1950-
1951 were Elaine Jacobs, Cynthia Duel, Sylvia
Hoyt, Susie Merwin, Captain Elizabeth Bradley
and Assistant Captain Joan Card. These six
cheerleaders for M.H.S. also won frst place in a
Harlem Valley League contest at Wappingers Falls
in March of 1951.
Many of the players and cheerleaders on this
1950-1951 championship year at M.H.S. are now
gone, but their memory in sports lives on.
I would like to thank North East Councilman
Steve Merwin and The Millerton News for the

The Millerton News: Still Going Strong After All These Years
By Whitney Joseph - Editor, The Millerton News
The Millerton News is the newspaper for those who live, work
and visit the Harlem Valley Region. It has all of the details about
whats important to its readers week after week.
The award-winning paper, which
has been around since 1880 (frst as
The Millerton Telegraph), covers
local news and events, sports, arts,
health and more. In fact, it offers
insight to just about everything
thats going on in the Harlem Valley.
The paper has been covering
the region since it was frst created
by Col Card, who named it The
Millerton Telegraph (the name was
changed to The Millerton News in
1933). Every year since its been
informing a growing number of
readers about the news that affects
their communities, their schools,
their homes.
That kind of consistent coverage
is hard to fnd these days, especially
in an independently owned
community newspaper, which is
exactly what The Millerton News
is and its one of the few in the

The Millerton News
region. Thats really something
special, as most papers today are
owned by large-scale chains, often
with their management located far
and away.
Our paper is different. Its
run out of a small offce right in
the heart of Millerton, and its
ownership group, The Lakeville
Journal Company, LLC, is located in
neighboring Lakeville, Conn., only
four miles away.
The Lakeville Journal Company,
LLC, is comprised of a group of
investors and newspaper veterans
dedicated to preserving the dying
breed of independently owned
community newspapers. The
group also publishes The Lakeville
Journal and The Winsted Journal in
Connecticut.
The companys determination
to publish its three community
newspapers serves The Millerton
News audience well, as it means
the community can rest assured it
will long have the paper to rely on
as its source of news in the Harlem
Valley.
Pick up a copy and see for
yourself. Were sure youll fnd it
interesting reading. You can also
