Ted ++++
I have never found Family Guy to be that funny. Sometimes, when I turn on American Dad, I can find a few laughs, but Seth McFarlanes original raunchy cartoon does nothing for me. The same cannot be said of McFarlanes fantastic new comedy, Ted, which I loved as soon as I became aware of, back in Autumn of 2011. The poster and trailer added to this and made it one of my most anticipated films of the year. I was not wrong. Mark Wahlberg stars as John, whos teddy bear came to life when he was eight. When Ted first began to talk and move, it was a big deal. He was invited on Johnny Carson, and Johnnys parents were regular news interviewees. As the voiceover tells us, however, after a while just like Frankie Muniz and Justin Bieber, nobody gives a shit! Skip forward to 2012, where Johnny and Ted are two washed-up potheads with crappy jobs. Johnnys girlfriend Laurie (Mila Kunis) is being wooed by her boss (Joel McHale on top form) and Johnny is planning to take her out to dinner for their fourth wedding anniversary. When they arrive home, Ted is sitting on the couch with several prostitutes, watching Jack and Jill. There is a turd on the floor. Laurie is furious and demands Johnny make Ted move out. Ted is forced to get a new apartment and job at a supermarket, where he meets a new girlfriend, who doesnt get on with Laurie at a double-date.

Johnny accompanies Laurie to a party at her bosses house, promising to spend less time with Ted, but when his furry buddy calls to say the original Flash Gordon (Sam Jones), their hero, is at his apartment, Johnny escapes, and the two friends spend the night smoking weed and drinking shots with Jones. At one point, an Asian man comes in to complain about the noise and he transforms into Emperor Ming. It is moments like this that make this film extra special, like 21 Jump Street earlier this year, and full of old-fashioned comic tricks. Even the films score is jazzy and reminds one of Laurel and Hardy type films of old. Johnny and Teds continuing relationship is a tragic case of Johnnys refusal to grow up. Laurie points this out on several occasions, but Johnny continues to deny it. Ted is a very funny and sometimes sad summer film, which you will want to watch over and over again.

A Thousand Words +

I dont hate Eddie Murphy. Some people hate him the way others hate Adam Sandler, whom I love. His voicing of Donkey is the best thing in the Shrek films (Im dying for a spin-off), and even recent fodder like Tower Heist hasnt been too bad. A Thousand Words made me feel a bit ill. It starts off with a serious of irritating scenes which are supposed to make us realise how talkative and obnoxious Murphys character is, and over time becomes more emotional and tries to show Murphys character learning to help people and feel others pain. Murphy is very annoying, as is the rest of the Z-list cast (par the excellent Jack McBrayer, who sadly appears very little) and the jokes are so unfunny they made me wretch. Please do not watch this film, under any circumstances! It contains false emotion and no humour.

The Amazing Spider-Man ++++

Andrew Garfield is the perfect example of a rising star. A few years ago, he had supporting roles in films such as Terry Gilliams The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, followed by a more prominent part in The Social Network and a lead in Never Let Me Go. Now, he has reached the high point: the Summer blockbuster. The zone only entered by a-listers such as Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr and Tom Cruise. He is putting on the sweaty red mask once worn by the endlessly charming Tobey Maguire, who has now moved back down a step to Oscar fare such as The Great Gatsby, as (500) Days of Summer director Mark Webb takes the reigns once carried by Sam Raimi, who is finishing off Oz: The Great and the Powerful starring Spider-Man 3 villain James Franco. Garfield does a very good job in this film. He is well able to pull of the confused, lonely teenager act as well as being experienced in the romantic scenes with Emma Stone, who shone in Easy A and was underused in The Help, but unfortunately isnt the best thing about this film. The best thing about the film is how Webb manages to create a tone that is dramatically different to that in Raimis 2002 original. This is a Spider-Man for 2012, a year where every teenager is tweeting their every thought, and pages of information are only one google away. This film is far more comedic than the original, as Raimi left the jokes for movies 2 and 3. The high points are when Garfield opens a day in the life montage by smacking the shit out of his alarm clock and plays a game on his smart phone whilst lying on a web, waiting for The Lizard to arrive. Speaking of The Lizard, he is what lets this film down. In his human form, Rhys Ifans does a good job of playing the hard-working, conflicted scientist Dr Curt Connors. However, whenever he transforms into the giant green dinosaur, the film becomes temporarily loud and annoying, and brings back memories of one of last years worst films, Super 8. The extended fight between Spidey and Lizard in Peter Parkers high school is the films worst scene, and is only redeemed due to a hilarious Stan Lee cameo, which is without doubt his best yet in any of the Marvel films, beating the moment in The Incredible Hulk when he drinks out of a bottle poisoned with gamma rays and drops dead. >>>>>

Extras Life of Pi
While were here, I might as well mention the 3-minute preview of Ang Lees Life of Pi that showed in 3D beforehand. Verdict: Boring and repetitive

Easter Eggs
1. Peter has a poster for Rear Window hanging in his bedroom Gwen has a copy of Seabiscuit on her desk. Tobey Maguire starred in this film. Stan Lee appears on screen while Peter and Lizard are fighting in the library Peter falls into a wrestling wring like the one in the original Spider-Man

<<<< When Denis Leary, best known for his work

as Diego in the Ice Age films, but also a very funny comedian, was chosen to play Captain Stacy, Gwens father, who appears briefly in SM3 portrayed by James Cromwell, I looked forward to seeing a performance rich with sarcasm and humour. Unfortunately, Leary is not one of the best things about ASM. He tells few jokes, and even though he behaves very negatively towards Peter throughout the film, a redeeming moment is rushed at the end, which fails to work on any level. I am not a big fan of 3D, not so much because it is a waste of time and money or because you have to wear stupid glasses, but because it fails to be used the way it should be anymore. Everyone is so busy making films immersive and full of depth that they forget to include pointy things. I love pointy things. The last film to use pointy things in its 3D, and probably the best 3D Ive ever seen, was Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I saw Harry Potter 8 and The Avengers in 2D, but was forced to sit through over-priced depthy nonsense for Tintin and MIB3, and decided ASM was 3Ds last chance to impress me. It was actually pretty good. There were lots of pointy things, Spideys swinging came out of the screen and when the camera panned out of Spideys eye and showed all of New Yorks skyline to James Horners beautifully haunting score, I cried.
Until quite recently, I relied solely on Pixar and the occasional Shrek film to give me my annual fix of good, charming animated comedies. Unfortunately, Pixar recently decided to stop making good films and focused their attention on Cars 2, Brave and Monsters University, the latter being the preferable, but still a far cry from Ratatouille and Wall.E. Now, the majority of good animation is being churned out by Universal, Blue Sky and Dreamworks. Megamind and Despicable Me were two of 2010s best comedies, and Rango was very enjoyable in 2011. 2012 is full of animated comedies- theres Ice Age 4, which ill review in a few days, and Rise of the Guardians later in the year. For now, we are given Madagascar 3, written by Noah Baumbach, previous collaborator of Wes Anderson, one of the greatest working directors in Hollywood. The film was released in the US in mid-June, but is being held off until October in the UK. Dont ask me why! I didnt enjoy the original Madagascar when I first saw it on the big screen, but I have grown to look at it more fondly in recent years. The sequel was a superior film in my opinion, with the addition of a rousing Hans Zimmer/Will.I.Am score and an all-star supporting cast including Alec Baldwin. This film has even more famous voices, with Jessica Chastain, Frances McDormand, Bryan Cranston, Martin Short and Shrek the Third director Chris Miller playing a variety of European police officers and circus animals. Most of the film involves the four main animals travelling from Monte Carlo to Rome to London as part of an all-animal circus. Alex finally finds love, as Gloria and Melmans relationship develops, and Marty puts on a fuzzy wig and sings a song. The kids will be delighted, you will be charmed and all will go home wanting to attend an all-animal circus.

MEN IN BLACK 3 ++++

August 2012

After the hilarious Men in Black and infantile MIIB, Agent J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back in black, fighting and protecting aliens who have taken up residence on Earth. MIB head honcho X has died, and K makes a speech at his funeral, which J jokes contains no emotion whatsoever. We see Boris the Animal (just Boris) escaping from a moonprison thanks to his girlfriend (Nicole Scherzinger donning her old Pussycat Dolls costume and carrying a cake) and vowing to go back in time and kill the MIB agent who took his arm (Agent K). This is where the films problems start. Boris is, in my opinion, one of the worst, most boring and annoying movie villains to appear on screens for several years. What happened to creating original, funny baddies for science-fiction movies instead of massive space-wasting aliens who say the same thing (just Boris) every single time they appear onscreen. Luckily, Boris appears in the film infrequently enough to not ruin it entirely. In fact, I was able to forget about his presence completely when he was offscreen and immerse myself in the pure fun of K and Js adventures. By K, I of course mean the 1960s version of Tommy Lee Jones, portrayed convincingly by Josh Brolin, sounding like he has been overdubbed by Jones and looking like a motion-capture creation. At one point in the film, J and K attend a party thrown by Andy Warhol, where the password to enter is Janice Joplin and Yoko Ono is waiting outside the door. They encounter Griffin, a man with a literally open mind who sees everything from the point of view of several different futures at once. He is about the most interesting thing in the film, and the only thing which seems like it might fit into a proper, grown-up science-fiction film. Not that MIB3 is even half as childish as its predecessor in the series. The film manages to explore the racism of the 60s in an efficient way, without being offensive, but without losing the comic tone of the rest of the film, when J is arrested for driving a fancy car around New York. Many critics have said the film brushes over this issue and focuses on the action, but I think Sonnefields intentions were better than that, and that he actually wanted young people watching the film to think about the issues raised. The final action-packed sequence at the site of the July 1969 moon launch is thrilling and the time jumps off the Chrysler Building are dizzying in 3D. Men in Black 3 is great fun for the family to enjoy, even if it isnt the Summers smartest or best blockbuster. Christopher Nolan has nothing to worry about over here if hes looking for some Dark Knight Rises competition, so he better keep his eye on Snow White or Prometheus to steal his crown.

DVD OF THE MONTH: JOHN CARTER +++

If only a handful of people know how to direct CGI, one of them is Andrew Stanton. The man responsible for such classics as Wall.E was given this adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs stories to direct as a reward for his success at Pixar Animation, and as this film consists largely of CGI characters and landscapes, you would expect him to pull off a magnificent epic. I heard an interview with Stanton on BBC Radio 5live in March, and he actually sounded quite arrogant, stating: I dont care if it cost $250, I made it for myself and I dont care if anyone else likes it The film flopped. Disney lost hundreds of millions of dollars to the Box Office around the world, but not necessarily because of the films quality. >>>>>>

<<<< John Carter is a pretty decent and entertaining film. The first 19 minutes feature Edgar Rice discovering his uncle (Carter)s death, and beginning to read his journal. We meet John, a cowboy, who is arrested by a General Custer impressionist and escapes, only to be transported to MARS! He is captured by Tharks (led by Willem Dafoe) and is made their hero after rescuing a Princess (Lynn Collins) from the evil Dominic West. Mark Strong basically reprises his Green Lantern role as one of Wests advisors, and is one of the few really good performances in the film. Thomas Haden Churchs voice makes an appearance, as another Thark, and as this is on my list of Sounds I Could Listen To Throughout Eternal Death, it came as a nice surprise. Kitsch is perfectly charming as Carter, the rest of the cast are fine, and the CGI desert and city landscapes are astoundingly beautiful.

However, there is an issue in the fact that almost every action sequence is taken straight out of Star Wars. There is pod-racing from The Phantom Menace, a big monster in a pit from Return of the Jedi, and arena battle from Attack of the Clones, raiders firing from cliffs from A New Hope and people standing on balconies looking out at cityscapes from Menace and Attack.

In one sequence, Carter is fighting an army of enemy Tharks and as he strikes each blow against a warrior, we see flashback images of him discovering his wife dead in a house fire and burying her in the garden. This is a surprisingly emotional scene compared with the rest of the film, and shows a different side of Carter that helps us empathise better with him for the remainder of the running time.
