Rural Tourism Challenges and Opportunities

INTRODUCTION
After independence government was focusing on development of the key areas like agriculture, industry, infrastructure, etc in rural India. Tourism was never seen as a potential business, it was growing at its own space. Tourist arrived to India increased to 4.43 million in 2006, up 14.2 per cent from 3.92 million in 2005

INTRODUCTION
Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) during the Month of January, 2012 was 6.81 lakh as compared to FTAs of 6.24 lakh during the month of January, 2011 and 5.69 lakh in January, 2010. The trend of positive growth in FTAs observed during the year 2011 continued in January, 2012 too with a growth rate of 9.2%. The growth rate of 9.2% in January 2012 over January 2011 was higher than 5.2% growth rate observed in December, 2011 over December 2010.

Objectives
Objectives of the study are (1) To understand the potential of rural tourism, (2) To find out the impact of rural tourism to our society (3) To identify the challenges and opportunities in rural tourism (4) To identify the essential elements for development of rural tourism.

Methodology
The present study has been conducted in Pune, the sample respondents comprising both tourists from different socio-economic category of society. The survey was conducted using the convenient sampling method. Primary data was collected from 150 respondents by administering them a detailed questionnaire

Two basic techniques are used for research, i.e., observation method and survey method

survey has been conducted to find out where they have any idea about the rural tourism and what the future of Rural Tourism in India. Only 26% of the respondents are aware of the term rural tourism, but they do not know much about it. About 75% of the respondents are interested to know more about the rural Tourism. Around 86% of the respondents said that rural tourism will be beneficial for both rural and urban

Results and discussion


65% of the respondents are interested in natural tourism for recreation which includes a wide range of activities skiing, paragliding, swimming, water rafting, fishing, hunting, horse riding, trekking, safaris, etc. Cultural tourism, which is concerned with the culture, history, and archeology of local people; 53% of the respondents are interested to visit those places in India which have cultural significance.

Results and discussion


Health Tourism, which is concerned with health, yoga and ayurvedic treatments. 45% of the respondents believe that Health Tourism could be a good option for rural tourism. Ecotourism, which is a responsible type of tourism which preserves natural resources as well as maintaining the well-being and social values of the local population 46% of the respondents are interested to visit those site is famous for their natural resources
