Abortion

Introduction:

An abortion is the medical process

of ending a pregnancy so it does not
result in the birth of a baby. It is also
sometimes known as a 'termination'
or a 'termination of pregnancy.

Purpose:

Our group's proposal tackles the

moral issue of abortion, and how
we, as Christians may help inform
and educate our countrymen on the
issue.

Church's stand

Since life begins at conception, abortion is

akin to murder as it is the act of taking human
life. Abortion is in direct defiance of the
commonly accepted idea of the sanctity of
human life. No civilized society permits one
human to intentionally harm or take the life of
another human without punishment, and
abortion is no different.

Body:

In the Philippines today, there are numerous factors

that people are considering for abortion. One instance
is the rising problem of pre-marital sex which leads
into teen-pregnancy. Another factor is the case of
rape. According to the PNP Directorate for
Investigation and Detective Management (PNP-DIDM),
the number of cases of rape and incest have increased
in the past decade, going as high as 7,409 reported
rape incidents, or one every 72 minutes in 2014.*
These incidents involved both women and child
victims.

Body:

Despite all of these problems, Abortion should not be

used as another form of contraception. This is because
abortion can result in medical complications later in
life; the risk of ectopic pregnancies doubles, and the
chance of a miscarriage and pelvic inflammatory
disease also increases.

For women who demand complete control of their

body, control should include preventing the risk of
unwanted pregnancy through the responsible use of
contraception or, if that is not possible, through
abstinence. In the instance of rape and incest, proper
medical care can ensure that a woman will not get p
regnant.

Conclusion:

The group, as Christians, is against abortion since it violates

the sanctity of life gifted by God, and creates medical
complications to women. We suggest some alternatives to
abortion. Other contraceptives such as condoms, pills, etc.
could also be used to avoid unwanted pregnancy. In the
case of unwanted pregnancy, the child/children could be
put on adoption instead of killing them for a mistake they
did not commit. There are also various organizations that
could aid pregnant woman such as Association of Pro-life
Physicians that offers pregnancy counseling centers,
maternity care, and other programs that aid single mothers,
pregnant women and post-abortive women.
