ANTH 100

March 9, 2016

Dr. Paulette Steeves

Chapter 11

11.1 Discuss the relationship between biology and culture and how
anthropologists regard the nature/nurture questions of
humanity.
11.2 Explain the difference between nonhuman animal behavior and
human behavior.
12.2 Discuss what makes human languages unique in comparison
with nonhuman animal communication.
Define biocultural anthropology
Discuss one example of non-human communication that humans
have not developed
Such as; Salmon navigation by smell , bird murmuration (flock flight in
sync)

11.1 Discuss the relationship between biology and culture and how
anthropologists regard the nature/nurture questions of
humanity.

Both biology and culture influence human behavior

Neither exist in absolute pure form
A biocultural perspective combines the effects of biology and
culture to explain human behavior,.

Biocultural anthropology exists at the intersection of cultural and biological

approaches. Given how concepts, methods, and institutions have changed with
regard to biology and culture since the early 1900s, the biocultural
intersection has proven a dynamic space. It is also a contested space, where
claims about human nature and culture and about science and ethnography
have often come into stark contrast. Daniel Lende2013

Bio-cultural approach is one which views humans as

biological, social and cultural beings in relation to the
environment (McElroy, 1990). It also views human biological
variability as a function of responsiveness and adaptation to
the environment with a special focus on the role of sociocultural environments. Its significance consists in conceptual
framework and models for understanding the dynamic
interactions among human biological/phenotypic,
psychological and socio-cultural traits in response to the
environment. (R. Khongsdier nd)

11.2 Explain the difference between nonhuman animal behavior and

human behavior.
Animals inherit instincts that allow them to take advantage of
specific conditions in their environment

Bird migration
Bears hibernating
Salmon migration 4 year cycle
Innate knowledge that animals are born with
Instincts and learned behaviors
Birds learn specific songs through exposure yet some are born with
near perfect song practices
Nature and nature and the environment may be involved in animal
behaviors

Humans
Culture is learned
We are born with reflexes, as are all animals, and we act in some ways
to stimuli in our environment- we run from raging forest fires.
Humans have instances and humans have drives
Biological urges, hunger, thirst, sex
Important for survival of the species
not all humans have a drive that ensures survival of the species
How we satisfy drives are learned through experience- culture

There are of course many questions left unanswered, a fuzzy area

where research is ongoing

12.2 Discuss what makes human languages unique in comparison with

nonhuman animal communication.

Human languages are flexible and creative

Reference to the past, present and future
Animal communications are rigid and fixed NOT Always
Chimps always use the same pattern of vocalization as their parents

Human language allows for efficient and creative use of symbolic
communication
HOWEVER- Non human animals have ways of symbolic and vocal
communication that is incredibly efficient beyond that of many
humans. Scents, colors, body language
Some birds have been found to have 2 distinctly different patterns of
vocalizations based on an urban or forest environment
So Again many questions remain and we should always remain open
to learning of the communications and languages of other species.
