Felipe Padilla De Leon


1912 - 1992

BIOGRAPHY

Aside from being a composer he wrote the


operas Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, as
well as numerous zarzuelas, overtures, suites,
symphonic poems, chamber works, choral
music, concertos, piano solos, band music, film
music, childrens songs and Christmas carols,
among others he was also a conductor, writer
and music educator, radio program host,
musical missionary (his Himig ng Lahi group
toured U.S. and Canada) and organizer ( he was
the founding President of the Pambansang
Samahan ng mga Banda sa Pilipinas and the
Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and
Publishers).

General Tinio) in Pearanda, Nueva Ecija.

His father died when he was only 3 years old.
he held a number of odd jobs ranging from
that of a shoe-shine boy, a carabao herder, a
rig driver, a seller of vernacular weeklies, and
an ice-cream and pan de sal vendor.

Music in New York.

He married Iluminada Mendoza, a pianist, with


whom he had six children.
Bayani and Felipe Jr., are two of his children; the
former being a well-known composer, and the latter,
a writer.
Awards; Doctor of Humanities, from the University of
the Philippines, Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan
Award (City of Manila), Presidential Award of Merit,
Republic Cultural Heritage Award, Rizal Pro-Patria
Award and others.
He was conferred an honorary degree, doctor of
philosophy in the humanities, by the University of
the Philippines in 1991.
died on the 5th of December, 1992.
