the environment. Now your English teacher has
asked you to write an essay.
Write an essay using all the notes and give reasons
for your point of view
______________________________________________________
Every country in the world has problems with
pollution and damage to the environment. Do you
think these problems can be solved?
Notes

TIME DISTRIBUTION

1. Read Instructions: 1 min

2. Think of Vocabulary and
Structures: 5 min
3. Prepare Outline: 2 min
4. Write a Draft: 7 min ******
5. Write Final Writing:20 min
6. Check and Correct: 5 min
Total = 40 min.

1. READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY

Read the statement twice or three times to really
understand what is being asked.
Example:
Every country in the world has problems with pollution
and damage to the environment. Do you think these
problems can be solved?
Notes
Write about:
1. transport
2. rivers and seas
3.........................(your own ideas)
Take note that they say "que TODOS los pases tienen
problemas con la contaminacin y el dao al medio
ambiente".
Then, you are asked for your personal opinion: Do you
think these problems can be solved?
Finally, you are asked to write about the topic in
relation to transport, rivers and seas, and your own
idea.

2. BRAINSTORM AND THINK OF

VOCABULARY

Write down all ideas which come to mind

regarding the topic. As ideas flow in, think of
some vocabulary you will use.
For example:
Human activity- Pollution is a consequence of
human activity, and human progress
Technology - Technologies play a key role in
solving the problem of pollution.
Education- Education is important to be able to
deal with pollution.
Children- Will bear (soportar) the consequences of
a polluted world in the future. They should also
learn about pollution and how to prevent it.

Human Necessities- Human greed (avaricia

humana) has no limits.
Transport- Air contamination is a real threat
(amenaza) to health- Technology might help.
Rivers and sea- Industry plays a key role in
stopping water contamination
Developing Countries- Developing countries
pollute a lot
Developed Countries- Developed countries
also pollute a lot, example: United States
Flora and fauna: Flora and Fauna also affected
by the pollution.
Health- Health is affected by pollution. This is
a main issue
Survival- At the end it is a question of survival,
we pollute because we probably choose the
wrong ways to survive.

3. ORGANIZE YOUR IDEAS

Its very important to connect your ideas in a determined order
Useful Phrases:
- Many people/Some people argue...Mucha gente, alguna
gente argumenta....
- It is often said..Se dice frecuentemente que...
- However, in my opinion/ view ...No obstante, en mi opinin...
- I would say....yo dira
-From my point of view....Desde mi punto de vista
- Firstly, it is true (clear) that...En primer lugar, es verdad
(est claro) que....
- While it is true that...Aunque es verdad que...
- On the one hand, and on the other hand (Two different
angles!).
For example: On the one hand it is true that pollution has
been increasing over the years but, on the other hand, many
people think that this a price we have to pay for progress.
- Finally, it is important to take into account that....Finalmente
es importante tener en cuenta que...

OUTLINE
Example:
1. Introduction:Rewrite the statement in you own words. For
example:
Pollution and damage to the environment are worldwide issues
that are very difficult to solve.
2. Development 1: Develop your arguments about bulletin
points 1 and 2.
For example, if we take a look at transport we will see that it
mainly relies on very polluting fossil fuel. Something similar
happens with the rivers and the seas..
3. Development 2:Introduce a third idea different from 1 and 2
and express your own ideas about the issue.
I would say that it is possible to slowly reduce the amounts
of pollutants released to the environment...
4. Conclusion:Explain why you believe this and close with a
conclusion
Therefore, in my opinion if governments and industries do
not get more involved, it is only possible to solve these
problems ....

4. WRITE A DRAFT
Pollution and damage to the environment are worldwide
issues that are very difficult to solve. There are many
reasons why.
For example, if we take a look at transport we will see that
it mainly relies on very polluting fossil fuel. The ideal
solution would be to replace it by less polluting energies
such as electricity,
Something similar happens with the rivers and the seas.
They are being contaminated by industries that discharge
chemicals and plastics.
I would say that it is possible to slowly reduce the amounts
of pollutants released to the environment, but not to
completely eliminate them until there aren't new
technologies that allows us to replace them by less
polluting products.
Therefore, in my opinion if governments and industries do
not get more involved, it is only possible to solve these
problems in the long run by implementing new technologies
that can reduce pollution and their harmful effects.

WRITE YOUR ESSAY

Pollution and damage to the environment are worldwide issues
that are very difficult to solve. There are many reasons why.(1)
For example, if we take a look at transport we will see that it
mainly relies on very polluting fossil fuel.(2)The ideal solution
would be to replace it by less polluting energies such as
electricity, but this process takes time and in the meantime we
cannot ask countries to stop using fossil fuel because their
economies would collapse.(3)
Something similar happens with the rivers and the
seas.(4)They are being contaminated by industries that
discharge chemicals and plastics. But is it possible to stop
industries from producing chemicals and plastics?(5)
I would say that it is possible to slowly reduce the amounts of
pollutants released to the environment, but not to completely
eliminate them until there aren't new technologies that allows
us to replace them by less polluting products.(6)
Therefore, in my opinion if governments and industries do not
get more involved, it is only possible to solve these problems in
the long run by implementing new technologies that can reduce
pollution and their harmful effects.(7)

Essay Analysis
(1) Introduction.Rewrite the statement in your own
words. Observation:You mustnt copy the statement,
but paraphrase, in other words, say something
similar using synonyms. As you can see, Ive chosen
the word "issue" which is a synonym of problem".
(2)Notice how I connect the introduction and the
first explanation with the expression "for example".
(3)Igin tackling the first topic which appears in the
instructions: contamination problems and
environmental damages caused by transport. As you
can see, I give a solution: "replace fossil fuel by less
polluting ", but explain that this substitution takes
time because we cannot ask all countries to give up
fossil fuel because their economies would sink
(4)I join the following paragraph with the previous
one by saying "Something similar happens" at the
same time I introduce the second topic which
appears in the instructions.

(5)To make the writing for enjoyable I ask a

question
(6) With the expression: "I would say" I make it
clear that I will give my opinion regarding the
question from the previous paragraph.
(7) Conclusion:I give my final opinion never at
the beginning due to the fact that you will run out
of things to say. THEN I add: "in my opinion".
I have tried to not use this phrase before so that
it would not be so repetitive. Finally, I use the
word "harmful" synonym of "damaging" repeat
the words from the title.
Synonyms are key in making your writing get a
better score for the reason that the indicate a
higher knowledge of vocabulary.
