Health = complete physical, mental and


social well being & just not the non existence
of disease or ailment
• Health is a primary human right
• Due importance by the Constitution through
Article 21
The Indian Health sector consists
• Medical care providers like physicians, specialist
clinics, nursing homes, hospitals.
• Diagnostic service centers and pathology
laboratories.
• Medical equipment manufacturers.
• Contract research organizations (CRO's),
pharmaceutical manufacturers
• Third party support service providers (catering,
laundry).
Before Independence
• Conventionally health care based on voluntary
work
• Acute knowledge in the medicinal properties of
plants & herbs passed on from 1 generation to
another to be used for treatment.
• Britishers changed the scenario.
• Hospitals managed by Christian missionaries
took centre stage.
After Independence
• Healthcare shambles with large number of
deaths & spread of infectious diseases.
• After independence the GOI laid stress on
Primary Health Care & India has put in sustained
efforts to better the health care system across the
country.
• The government initiative not enough to meet
demands from a growing population
• sources of finance critical for the sustainability of
the health sector.
Entry of Private Sector
• About 20 years back, private sectors venture
consisted of only solo practitioners, small
hospitals and nursing homes.
• Quality of service - excellent esp. hospitals run by
charitable trusts & religious foundations.
• In 1980's GOI realize its own operations nt able
to provide for health care, Govt. allowed entry of
private sector to reduce the gap b/w supply &
demand for healthcare.
• Private hospitals managed by corporate, non-profit or
charitable organizations.

• Establishment of private sector resulted in emergence of


opportunities in terms of medical equipment,
information technology in health services, BPO,
Telemedicine and medical tourism.

• Large companies & affluent individuals started 5


hospitals dominate space for high end market.

• Private sector made tremendous progress, but on the flip


side it is also responsible for increasing inequality in
healthcare sector.
Information Technology In Health Services

• Information technology being used in health


services.
• Barcode Medication Administration technology
used to medication dispensing errors, improve
patient safety in hospital settings.

• Chronic Disease Management technology used to


manage chronic illness like diabetes & heart failure.
• Telehealth technology connect doctors & patients in
different geographical locations.
Medical Tourism
• relatively new concept, becoming popular Globally

• India has several advantages in favor of medical


tourism like infrastructure, technology, cost effective
medical care and hospitalization qualified and skilled
doctors

• Traditional Indian rejuvenation methods like yoga,


ayurvedic massage find favor with people in western
countries & corporate hospitals & wellness centers
