Three Senses of
Conscience
Synderesis (A Capacity)
The aspect of fundamental qualities of being
human, which makes it possible to know and to
be good.
Moral Conscience (A Process)
The aspect of our method of visualizing and
thinking. The moral discernment
Conscience (A Judgment)
The concrete judgment of what I must do in the
situation grounded on my personal perception
and apprehension of values.
Activity
Create a short skit (3-5 minutes)
regarding on testing of conscience
Kinds of Conscience
1. Antecedent or legislative
If the judgment on the morality of an action is passed
before the action is realized
2. Consequent or Judicial
If it evaluates an act already performed. It is an
interior self- accusation ensuing a wrongful action or
omission by the person.
2. Consequent or Judicial
A. Right – if the act conforms to the objective norms
of morality.

B. Erroneous – if the act does not conform to the
objective norms of morality.
1. Vincible – the error can be corrected with some
good will and thus, culpable.
2. Invincible - the moral agent is not aware of any
error and thus, inculpable.

B. Lax – without sufficient evidence, the person is
inclined to judge a thing to be lawful when in reality

C. Scrupulous – when a person is in constant fear of
doing wrong when there is none.
3. Transmoral Conscience
Does not judge in obedience to a moral but in
agreement to the participation in a reality
4. Triumphant Conscience
The moral conscience is overcome by the “heroic
effect” toward the universe and the surrender to its
infinity and inexhaustible creativity.
Activity
1. Do you think being a single mother is
scrupulous conscience? Why? Defend your
answer.
2. On your experience give an example of
“heroic effect” a triumphant conscience. Why
do you consider this as “heroic effect”.
