CULTURE AND SOCIETY

OF PILAR, BOHOL
Embracing the differences and uniqueness of one’s
society and culture.
 Pilar is an interior town which is considered a fourth
class municipality of the province of Bohol. It is a part of
the third congressional district of the province with a
total land area of 6,248 hectares.

 It has a population of 27, 276 people.

 Its total land area is politically subdivided into 21 barangays

 Pilar was once a barangay of the town of Sierra-Bullones and once

called Lungsodaan as it was the old seat of the municipal
government during the reign of the Spaniards.

 Pilar then became a separate municipality when the late President

Carlos P. Garcia issued the Executive Order No. 460 making the
barangay a new municipality.
The Eskaya is an
indigenous tribe found in the

hinterlands of the Pilar, towns

of Duero, Guindulman, and Sierra
Bullones, Bohol’s southeast interior.
The settlement of this tribe is at
Biabas, Guindulman, established
in the early 20th century by one
Mariano Datahan. Datahan died
in the year 1949.
A second settlement was established at Taytay,
under the municipality of Duero in the year 1951;
founded by Fabian Baja under Datahan’s
instructions. Eventually, the group spread to nearby
Canta-ub, Lundag, Tambongan, Cadapdapan
and Fatimah.

Likewise known as the “Visayan-Eskaya”, the

community is only found in the island province of
Bohol. They have a unique cultural heritage, use a
distinct language and literature, and have
traditional practices that dates way back to pre-
Spanish times.
With regards to their language and script, the Eskayan speech has been
associated with either of the Hebrew, Greek, and Etruscan languages.
Recent studies reveal though that the syntax of their language is identical to
that of Cebuano, leading the researchers to believe that their language is
actually an elaborate form of Cebuano coding.
