Gorgibus wants his daughter Lucile to marry the older Villebrequin, but Lucile loves Valere. To help the lovers, Valere's valet Sganarelle pretends to be a doctor, though he has no medical skills. Through exaggeration and humor, Sganarelle convinces Gorgibus of his abilities to treat Lucile's alleged illness. This ruse allows Sganarelle to examine Lucile and declare her fit to marry Valere, overcoming Gorgibus' objections. The play satirizes social conventions through farcical humor.

PREPARED BY: NOEMI C. OCIO Jean Baptiste-Poquelin (1622-1973) Stage name: Molière A French Playwright and an actor One of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature. The French dramatist Moliere (1622-1673) wrote comedies that range from simple farces to sophisticated satires. As author, director, producer, manager, and actor, Moliere lived fully the life of a man of the theater. He was baptized in the church of St. Eustache in Paris on January 15, 1622. SATIRE
It uses irony, and in some cases, exaggeration to
expose vices and shortcomings of an entity, be it an individual or a complex and interdependent system such as our society. Humor might be part of it, but the end result is almost never funny. The Flying Doctor translates in French to mean “The Doctor in Spite of Himself” The title is significant because Sganarelle takes on a role, the doctor, that he didn’t think he was capable of doing. He ends up doing much better at it than he thought. First play written by Molière Composed of 15/16 scenes Has 7 characters CHARACTERS Gorgibus - an old nobleman, the father of Lucile Lucile - daughter of Gorgibus, engaged to Villebrequin (older man) but is in love with Valère Sabine - Lucile's cousin, the source of all the intrigue in the play Valère - Lucile's lover Sganarelle - Hero of the play, valet of Valère Gros-René - Gorgibus' servant Lawyer - tested the skills of Sganarelle Settings
