DEEP WATER
(WILLIAM DOUGLAS)
William Douglas
 Born in Maine, William Douglas did a
Bachelor of Arts in English and
Economics and spent two years
teaching High School in Yakima
 Douglas initially became an adviser
to the President and later retired in
1975 as a leading advocate with a
term lasting more than 36 years!
 William Douglas, one of the most popular and
powerful American Supreme Court Chief Justices in
the history, had an enemy since the childhood. He
tried to defeat this enemy in all possible ways.
 First he tried to overcome this enemy all by himself
and later with the help of a trainer.
 Though he took years to defeat the enemy, finally
Douglas killed his enemy.
 He was not arrested or sentenced for this murder,
not because he himself was the chief justice, but
because his murdered enemy was his fear of water!
INTRODUCTION
 Owing to his inability to swim, the author,
decided to master this art by optimally
using the opportunity provided by the
Y.M.C.A in Yakima which had a pool. The
Yakima river being treacherous, was
disallowed by his mother. The Y.C.M.A pool
was safe and was 9 feet deep at the end
with a gradual slope.
 The author was fascinated and planned to
learn and master the art!
The Drowning Experience
Stage 1
 The Author recalls...
 His fear for water had started while he was very young.
He remembers the incident he encountered he faced
while he was 3 or 4 years old. He was in California with
his father and even though he stood on a surf with his
father the waves of the beach knocked him down
leaving him completely breathless. The author was in a
complete state of shock but the father laughed and did
not make a lot of noise about it but there was a terror
in his heart at the overpowering of the waves.
The Y.M.C.A Pool
Stage 2
 The Y.M.C.A pool was not associated with very
pleasant memories. The author enjoyed his first
couple days but then not after long did he
experience another life changing experience!
 The author was alone in the pool a fine day and
was scared to go in alone. He planned to wait for
others but not very soon, an 18 year old teen
picked up on him. The big bruiser was well built
and had thick hair on his chest. He popped him in
the deeper part of the pool. The author landed in a
sitting position, swallowed water and went deep
down in the water and was not very successful in
coming out safely!
The Drowning Experience
Stage 3
 He was tossed and went down the water at once. He
got frightened but not frightened out of his wits. On
the way down he made his action plan and decided to
push himself with all his might when he touched the
tiles.
 The author did not loose his calm and was composed
even at these breathtaking moments. The way down
was very long, long enough to fill his lungs with water.
He panicked but pushed himself with all his might. The
push was not very effective but he did manage to get
his eyes and nose outside the water - but not his
mouth.
 He tried to grab a rope or catch hold of a ladder and threw his hands
up but could not hold anything but the water. He panicked and
shrieked for help but none came. No one heard but the water. His
legs became paralyzed and rigid. He had to make the long journey
once again.
 He lost all his breath, his lungs ached, he was tired, he felt dizzy but
none of this made him forget his strategy to pop up like a cork. He
was supposed to lie flat, strike out with his arms, thrash his legs and
get to the edge of the pool and be safe. Stark terror seized him,
terror that was beyond control, terror that couldn't be understood!
Only his heart and the pounding in his head made him feel alive.
 At last he felt the tiles under him and jumped with all that was left
into him.
 the efforts were in vain. He finally felt that he was leaving the horrid
yellow water. He called for his mother the final time. He thought he
was getting out of water but he went down the third time too.
 All the efforts ceased. He relaxed.
This time it was peaceful! He did
not feel his body. Everything went
numb and everything was very
peaceful. There was no fear, no
terror and everything was so
comfortable. He crossed to
oblivion and finally felt his curtain
of life fall down.
Stage 4
 The next thing he knew was he lying flat outside the pool,
puking. He overheard people telling that he was about to die
and then was carried to the locker room and taken care of. He
walked home in a few hours never to return back and feared
water and avoided as much as he could. For days that incident
haunted him and was not able to eat or sleep or for that
matter do anything properly. The slightest exertion upset him
making him wobbly from his knees to his stomach! He could
not get over that trauma for years and was scared to get into
waters for a avery long period of time.
 It took a lot of experience and time to make him
realize how much fun was he missing out by not
enjoying the waters and soon changed his mind to
overcome his fears.
HIRED AN INSTRUCTOR
 He then decided to overcome his fear. Later that
October he hired a personal trainer to overcome his
fear. With all the rigorous efforts and hardcore
training of three months he finally mastered the art!
 He mocked his fears and had now overpowered it!
 He was not satisfied and felt a bit of fear even after
that and therefore he went to Lake Wentworth in
New Hampshire, dived off a dock at Triggs Island,
and swam two miles across the lake to Stamp Act
Island. He mocked his terror and made sure it never
return again. He had conquered the fear of water.
He had WON!! :D
