What are anorexia and bulimia?
• Anorexia and bulimia are eating
disorders. Their consequences are
not limited to weight loss.
Malnutrition, induced by a
restrictive regime, generates more
problems. Subnutrion and protein,
mineral, vitamin and essential fatty
acides deficiencies are responsible
for numerous effects.
How can we define them psychiatrically?
• ,,It is hard to say exactly how it’s like or what is inside the mind of an
anorexic. The anorexic has low self-esteem and a deformed view over
his own body- he sees himself fatter, unaesthetic. However, he is very
competitive- he wants to be skinny, to be thin, to be fashionable.
• Unfortunately, the etiology is not well known. There are some proves
which show that there are some sociocultural, biological factors; some
psychological mechanisms less specific and some kind of personality
vulnerability which can trigger anorexia.
At first, anorexia manifests as a
concern for food, which means the
person is more careful at what
he/she eats, trying to have a
healthier lifestyle. After that, the
belief comes. The person is
convinced he/she is fat, food
restrictions begin to appear.
He/She starts to have
impenetrability of the delirium,
tormenting obsession.
• Therefore, the anorexics are imposing
dietary restrictions with delirious
firmness. There may be times when they
regurgitate large amounts of food, but,
unlike the bulimics, they don’t eat much
for pleasure.
• This action is, actually, the outbreak of
food impulse, it is the body that
desperately asks for food. However, right
after, the person starts to feel guilty.
• There is this wrong conception, that de anorexics and the bulimics are
antisocial. To be antisocial means to not follow the rules of society and
to reject them. The anorexics want to be accepted in society, they want
friends, they want to have social life, but, because they see themselves
ugly, deformed, in another words-they see themselves unacceptable and
impossible to be integrated in society if they stay at the same level, a
level where they hate themselves.
• They have low selfesteem and an inferiority complex that crushes them.
• So they prefer to not be seen, when they eat,by other people, or when they
refuse the food.”
