CALCULATE THE AMOUNT

OF SUBSTANCES USED OR
PRODUCED IN A CHEMICAL
REACTION

BY: SHEAN NICHOLE R. MORITO GRADE 11 HUMSS A

Calculations with chemical reactions require some
background knowledge in basic chemistry concepts:
Atomic mass– the total mass of protons, neutrons and electrons in
a single atom
Molecular mass– the mass of one molecule. Molecular mass is
equal to the total mass of all the elements making up a molecule.
Mole –a unit of measurement widely used in chemistry to measure an
amount of a particular substance
 Molar mass– the mass of 1 mole of a substance (molecule or atom).
Balanced chemical reactions– a chemical reaction consists of reactants
(written on the left) and products (written on the right).
e.g. 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O There are 4 H atoms and 2 O atoms on the reactants
and on the products sides of the equation.
Sample Problem:
What mass (g) of iron (Fe) will be produced from 152.6 g of carbon monoxide and an
excess of iron (III) oxide? The molar mass of carbon monoxide is 28.01 g/mol and the
molar mass of iron is 55.85 g/mol.

Fe2O3(s) + 3 CO(g) → 2 Fe(s) + 3 CO2(g)

Solution 1: Using the Step-by-Step Proportion Technique

(unknown quantity name)uqn: mass (unknown quantity symbol) uqs: gram

(unknown unit name) uun: m (unknown unit symbol) uus: g

Step by Step Technique :
Step 1 : Convert g of carbon monoxide
(CO) to moles.
G

Step 2: Calculate the amount of Fe, n,

produced from
Step 3 : Step 3: Convert the mol of Fe into
grams.
Algebraic Technique
Let m represent the unknown mass of Fe (in
grams) produced from 152.6 g of carbon
monoxide.
Round the final answer to 4 significant
digits.
