DENTIFRICES

Association Council on Dental
Therapeutics:
“A dentifrices is a substance
used with a toothbrush for the
purpose of cleaning the accessible
surface of the teeth”
 Prepared in a bulk powder
 Generally containing a soap or detergent
 These may or may not contain fluoride and polishing agents
 Derived from Dens (tooth) and fricare (to rub)
TYPES OF
DENTIFRICES
1. Toothpaste
• It is an abrasive that aids in removing dental
plaque and food from the teeth

• Most toothpaste contains fluoride, and dentists


agree that topical fluoride treatments help keep
tooth enamel strong and cavity-resistant.

2. Tooth powder
• prevents bacteria from sticking to the teeth
• neutralizes the pH to help avoid tooth decay.
• composed of natural and organic ingredients
and does not contain fluoride, it is non-toxic
and safer for children.
Dental Fluorosis or Mottled Enamel
 Caused by ingestion of excessive fluoride
3. Mouthwash
• To kill the germs that can cause gingivitis
• The alcohol present in some mouthwashes will gradually dissolve
the mucus layer
• It have Fluoride mouthwash and Non-Fluoride Mouthwash.
4. Tooth soap
• It is natural, kills bacteria, is non-abrasive and heals
enamel. Plus it contains no fluoride.
• The focus of Tooth Soap® is deep cleaning of the
teeth and gums because periodontal disease is
running rampant in 2018 and is correlated with life-
threatening diseases such as cancer

PUMICE
SYNONYMS: PUMICE STONE; PIEDRA POMEZ
• Definition: A substance of volcanic origin
• Properties: Occurs as very light, hard, rough, porous grayish masses
• It is odorless and tasteless
• Stable in air
• Insoluble in water and is not attacked by acids
• Use: Official category is dental abrasive
• Used for polishing of tooth enamel
DESENSITIZING AGENTS
• are products that reduce the sensitivity of teeth
• used in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity
• can be prescribed to the patients after teeth whitening procedure to prev
the problem of sensitivity
DENTIN
• is a hard, light yellow,
porous layer of tissue
directly underneath enamel
and cementum
• surrounds the nerve of the
tooth is usually covered by
gum tissue
Strontium Chloride (SnCl2) found in
