INTRODUCTION
 Tennis is a sport usually played between two
players (singles) or between two teams of two
players each (doubles). Each player uses a
racket that is strung to strike a hollow rubber
ball covered with felt past a net into the
opponent's court.
 Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all
levels of society at all ages.
 Tennis enjoys millions of recreational players and
is also a hugely popular worldwide spectator
sport, especially the four Grand Slam
tournaments :

i. Australian Open

ii. French Open

iii. Wimbledon

iv. US Open
HISTORY
 Between 1859 and 1865, in Birmingham,
England, Major Harry Gem, a lawyer, and
his friend Augurio Perera, a Spanish
merchant, combined elements of the
game of rackets and the Spanish ball
game Pelota and played it on a croquet
lawn in Edgbaston.
 In 1872, both men moved to Leamington
Spa and in 1874, with two doctors from
the Warneford Hospital, founded the
world's first tennis club. The Courier of
23 July 1884 recorded one of the first
tennis tournaments, held in the grounds
of Shrubland Hall.
EQUIPMENT
1. Racquets
The tennis racquet comprises
a handle and neck joining
a roughly circular frame that
holds an array of tightly pulled
strings.
2. Balls
Tennis balls are of hollow rubber with
a felt coating. Traditionally white, the
predominant color was gradually
changed to Optic Yellow in the latter
part of the twentieth century to allow
for improved visibility.
3. Court

 Tennis is played on a rectangular, flat

surface, usually grass, clay, a hardcourt of
concrete and occasionally carpet (indoor).

 The court is 78 feet

(23.77 m) long, and 27
feet (8.23 m) wide for
singles matches and
36 ft (10.97 m) for
doubles matches.
Court Surface
There are four types of court surface used in
professional play. Each surface is different in
the speed and height of the bounce of the ball.

Surface Description
Clay Clay courts normally have a slower paced ball
and a fairly true bounce with more spin.
Hard Hardcourts typically have a faster-paced ball
with a very true bounce.
Grass Grass courts usually have a faster-paced ball,
and a more erratic bounce.
Carpet The bounce can be higher or lower than a
hard court.
CLAY

Clay courts normally have a

slower paced ball and a fairly true
bounce with more spin
HARD

Hardcourts typically have a

faster-paced ball with a very
true bounce.
GRASS

Grass courts usually have a faster-paced

ball, and a more erratic bounce.
SCORING
 A tennis match is determined through the
best of 3 or 5 sets. Typically for both
men's and women's matches, the first
player to win two sets wins the match.

 The running score of each game is

described in a manner peculiar to tennis:
scores from zero to three points are
described as "love", "fifteen", "thirty", and
"forty"
SHOTS
A competent tennis player
has eight basic shots in
his or her repertoire: the
serve, forehand,
backhand, volley, half-
volley, overhead smash,
drop shot, and lob.
SERVE

A serve (or, more formally, a

"service") in tennis is a shot to
start a point.
FOREHAND

For a right-handed player, the forehand

is a stroke that begins on the right side
of the body, continues across the body
as contact is made with the ball, and
ends on the left side of the body.
BACKHAND

For right-handed players, the backhand

is a stroke that begins on the left side
of their body, continues across their
body as contact is made with the ball,
and ends on the right side of their
