Lesson 66:

Estimating the Area

of a Parallelogram,
Triangle, and a
Trapezoid
Drill

Solve for n.
1. 9 x 8 = n
2. 12 x 6 = n
3. (15 x 8) ÷ 2 = n
4. (16 + 4) = n

Review
How to find the area of a
parallelogram, a triangle, and a
trapezoid?
Motivat
ion
Consider yourself a designer of
furniture and fixtures for homes. How
would your knowledge of area of the
geometric figures you have studied
help you in designing new products?
Presenta
tion
Estimate the area of the following figures.

Performing the
Activities

Divide the class into five groups and give each

group a drawing of the figures. The groups should
also be provided with manila paper and a marker to
write the steps on how the group was able to
estimate the area of the figures. The outputs should
be posted and used during the presentation. After
all the groups have finished, ask a member of each
group to report on the output.

the Activities
• How did you find the
activity?
• What helped you in
estimating the area of
each figure?
• How did you estimate the
area of each figure?
By counting, how many
square units were used to
cover each figure
completely?

When only part of the square is included in the

figure, we put it together with those partly
square in the figure to form a whole square.

Can you estimate the
area of the figures?
You can estimate the area of a
parallelogram, triangle, and a
trapezoid by counting how many
square units it takes to cover each
figure completely. When only part
of a square is included in the
figure, you may be able to put it
together with a part of another
square in the figure to form one
whole square.
= 1 sq cm or 1 cm 2
The area of the parallelogram is 28 cm 2

The area of the triangle is 20 cm 2

The area of the trapezoid is 26 cm 2

Summarizing the
Lesson
To estimate the area of a parallelogram, a
triangle, or a trapezoid:
Count the number of square units that are
completely inside the figure.
When only part of the square is included in
the figure, put it together with those partly
square in the figure to form a whole square.
Applying to New and Other
Situations

Apply Your Skills!

Our school principal wants to know how many floor tiles (or
linoleum sheet or wood tiles?) would be needed to cover the entire
floor of our classroom. She needs to know the exact area, because
she doesn’t want to either order too many tiles and waste money,
or too little and not be able to cover the entire floor. Your job is to
measure this room, determine the floor area, and write a letter to
the principal telling her how many tile to buy. The letter should
include an explanation about how you arrived at your estimates.
