• R.K. Narayan is the greatest Indian novelist.
• He is best known for his fictional south Indian town of
Malgudi.
• His works include Swami and his friends, The Bachelor
of Arts, The English Teacher and the Financial Expert.
• His novel, The Guide was adapted for film and it won
the Sahitya Academy Award.
• He was nominated to Rajya Sabha, the upper house
of India’s parliament.
• In this lesson Swami’s father reading
newspaper under the hall lamp.
• Later he said to his son, “Swami listen to this
news, it is about bravery boy of the village
while returning to home by jungle path he
came face to face the tiger”.
• He stayed on the tree half a day till some
people came that way and killed the tiger.
• Swami said , “I think he must have been a very
strong and grown-up person, not a boy at all”.
• “How could be a boy fight with a tiger?”
• His father angrily told “A man may have the
strength of an elephant and yet be a coward:
where as another may have the strength of a
straw, but if he has courage he can do
anything”.
• “Courage is everything, strength and age are not
important”.
• Later swami argued with is father that he has all
the courage what could I do if a tiger should
attack me?
• So his father told Swami to sleep him alone in his
office room.
• Swami was sleeping with his granny in the
passage.
• If their is any change in the daily routine he
will be trembling and awake all night.
• Swami told to his father that “From the first of
next month, I’ll sleep alone, father.”
• His father did not agree and said him ‘It is
disgraceful sleeping beside granny or mother
like a baby’.
