HOLINESS SERIES

HAIR
NILANSHI PATEL, INDIAN
“Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a
man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to
her: for hair is given for a covering.”
Hebrews 10:1 Amplified Bible (AMP)

One Sacrifice of Christ Is Sufficient

10 For since the Law has only a shadow [just a

pale representation] of the good things to come—
not the very image of those things—it can never,
by offering the same sacrifices continually year
after year, make [a]perfect those who approach [its
altars].

pananampalataya.
Galatians 3:24 Amplified Bible (AMP)

with the result that the Law has become our

24

tutor and our disciplinarian to guide us to Christ,

so that we may be [a]justified [that is, declared free
of the guilt of sin and its penalty, and placed in
right standing with God] by faith.
A. Looking at the Old Testament Significance
of Hair
1. A symbol of perfection and strength
Example: Elisha in 2Kings 2:23
2. Cutting of hair was a symbol of disgrace and
mourning.
Ezra 9:3
And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment
and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my
head and of my beard, and sat down astonied.
• Nehemiah 13:25
• It also signifies barrenness, sin and judgment
of God.
Isaiah 3:17
Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the
crown of the head of the daughters of Zion…
3. A symbol of glory
4. Uncut hair as a mark of separation unto God
Example: Nazarites
Translated as “nazir” it means separate or
consecrated. Three outward signs of separation,
namely:
a. They are not to partake grapes or any product of
grapes
b. They are not to touch corpes
c. They are not to cut their hair
B. The New Testament Teaching(1
Corinthians 11:1-16)
Verse 1-2
• Speak of the spiritual authority of
Paul which should be recognized,
acknowledged and followed since he
was anointed by Jesus to preach and
teach the Word.
Verse 2-3
• God is the head.
Also, the verse explains that the
head of the woman is the man.
The man was given spiritual
authority to represent the family
and the human race.
Verse 4

• Every man who

prophesies having his
head covered dishonor
his head (Christ)
Verse 5

• Every woman who prays or

prophesies having her head
uncovered dishonors her
head (man/husband)
Verse 6

• A woman who is uncovered is

also a shorn woman. But, if it
is a shame for a woman to be
shorn or shaven, let her be
covered.
Verse 7-9
• Man is the image and glory of God
(Gen. 1:26). Among the flesh, man is
the highest authority and therefore
he should not be covered. Meanwhile
the woman came from man (Gen.
2:22). To show this relationship, the
woman should be covered.
Verse 10
• Angels are involved in the matters of hair.
Angels desire to look into our salvation (1
Pet. 1:12). Angels also know that it is the
pride and rebellion that caused the fall of
Satan and some other angels. For this
cause, the woman should have power on
her head to set an example of
submission to the angels.
Verses 11-12

• Woman is not inferior to man

and man is not complete
without the woman. But, God
needs authority and He has
chosen man for this.
Verse 14
• The nature itself teaches that it is a
shame for a woman to have short
hair and for a man to have long hair.
The purpose of the nature is to
distinguish men from women which
is an important concept in the sight
of God.(Deut. 22:5)
Verse 15

• Clearly states that the

covering which the context
is discussing is the hair. The
hair is the woman’s glory.
Verse 16

• Says it is not the custom of the

Christians to become
contentious.
• God established standards for
Christians to follow in order for them
to be identified as the children of God.
• How can we say that we are separated
from the world while our lifestyle and
appearance resembles that of the
world?
