Paul B. Zafaralla
Born on June 22, 1983 in Upon, Pinili, Ilocos
Norte. He is a multilingual writer (Iluko, English,
Filipino) on Ilocano and Philippine culture and
the arts for the past 51 years. 
 The Association of the Philippines gave him
a special cognition for his body of published
works in 1971. This was followed by numerous
official participation in national and ASEAN
congresses on arts and aesthetics, in many of
which as a paper reader.

Santiago B. Villafania
Santiago Villafania is a bilingual Filipino poet
who writes in English and in his native language
of Pangasinan. Born in Tuliao, Sta. Barbara,
Pangasinan on 31 January 1971, Villafania
graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in
English from the University of Pangasinan in
1991. He is a member of the Philippine PEN
and currently a commissioner for the
Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission.

Ariel S. Tabag, is a bilingual Ilocano fiction
author, poet, editor, translator, and musician. He
has received the Palanca Awards for his Ilokano
short stories. He has also been awarded the
Talaang Ginto-Gantimpalang Collantes. He has
received awards from Ilocano literary contests
such as AMMAFLA, GUMIL California, SABALI,
RFAAFIL, ATILA, Tugade Awards.

developer. He is currently working as a researcher
at a NGO (Non-Government Organization).       
He is an online member of the group of
manunulang kilometer - 64 and of Pedro Bucaneg,
a group of local cultural workers in Nueva Ecija.

Florentino Hornedo
Florentino Hornedo was born in Savidug,
Sabtang, Batanes on October 16, 1938.
Dr. Hornedo has authored 13 books in
Philosophy, Education, Culture and History. He has
been editor of Ad Veritatem , a Journal of Research
at the UST Graduate School, and Ivatan Studies
Journal , a Graduate School Research Journal at
the Saint Dominic College of Batanes. He has
garnered several awards, among them the Don
Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature &
National Catholic Authors Awards. 12

Fernando Mamuri Maramág was born on
January 21, 1893 in Ilagan, Isabela. He was
educated in the Philippine Normal School, and
then transferred to the University of the
Philippines. He worked as teacher at the
Instituto de Manila, which later became the
University of Manila.

Edith L. Tiempo
Edith L. Tiempo, poet, fiction writer,
teacher and literary critic was a Filipino
writer in the English language. Tiempo was
born in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. Her
poems are intricate verbal transfigurations of
significant experiences as revealed, in two of
her much anthologized pieces, "Halaman"
and "Bonsai."

Ma. Luisa Aguilar- Cariño

LUISA A. IGLORIA (aka Maria Luisa Aguilar-Cariño) is
poet and Associate Professor in the MFA Creative Writing
Program and Department of English, Old Dominion
University. Her work has appeared or will be forthcoming in
numerous anthologies and journals including Poetry, Crab
Orchard Review, The Missouri Review, & Indiana Review.
Originally from Baguio City in the Philippines, Luisa is
also an eleven-time recipient of the Carlos Palanca
Memorial Award for Literature in three genres (poetry,
nonfiction, and short fiction); the Palanca award is the
Philippines' highest literary distinction.

Dion Michael Fernandez
Born in 1980 and raised almost all his life in Baguio
City, Dion Michael Fernandez has both a Bachelor’s
Degree in English and Literature and a Master’s Degree in
Language Education at Saint Louis University, where he was
recognized as “Maker of Myths” in the Mandala Literary
Society. Heavily armed and equipped with a vested, almost
obsessive, interest in world mythology, ancient cultures and
urban folklore, his literary style reflects an eccentric
combination of fact, fantasy, Gothicism and cosmopolitan
modernism; in fact, a number of his works contain subliminal
messages.

Marapait: For the Bitter and the Sweet
An Excerpt
Marapait is the local term for the wild sunflowers growing like grass
here in Baguio City -- common and abundant. How it got its name is
because of its bitter-tasting leaves. Mara is an Ilocano term for
"parang" (like, similar to) while pait, as we know it in Filipino means
bitter.

But these Marapait are more than just an apple to the eye. For a
Baguio local like Manong Larry, the mere sight of it brings him back
to his childhood, to the simple pleasures in life and to the Baguio he
had known before.

The village dump was our poetry and our history.

We took it home with us by any vehicle, bringing back into the village, the
things the village had used and thrown away.

Probably, the best way for us to keep our treasures which, always depict
our rich culture, is to deem just how helpful literature is I our lives. Yes, it's
maybe seldom useful, but always memorable.

I remember lola's nuang and her stories; I regret her yet. I regret her more
whenever I hear elderly stories and chants during mourning nights

Virgilio Almario
Virgilio S. Almario, also known as Rio Alma, is a poet,
literary historian and critic, who has revived and reinvented
traditional Filipino poetic forms, even as he championed
modernist poetics.
In 34 years, he has published 12 books of poetry, which
include the seminal Makinasyon and Peregrinasyon In these
works, his poetic voice soared from the lyrical to the satirical
to the epic, from the dramatic to the incantatory, in his often
severe examination of the self, and the society.

Rolando F. Santos
Rolando F. Santos became the founder and chairman of
the Creative Productions Committee, Artista para sa Kultura
at Dalumat ng Bayan (akdang_bayan); became vice
president of Katha Young Fictionists Collective; became
board member of Galian sa Arte at Tula (GAT) and National
Union of Writers (WRITING); Member of the National
Committee on the Literary Arts - National Commission on
the Culture.
From 1990 to 1996, he won three Palanca television
shows; won eighteen more awards in Gawad Galian,
Gantimpalang Ani, Gawad Carlos Bulosan and Gawad Ka
Amado for short stories, poems, essays, plays and songs;
Kalikasan Press also named him "Most Versatile Writer" in
1992.

D.M. Reyes

Danilo Francisco M. Reyes, also known as D.M. Reyes

was born on 11 May 1968 in Manila. He grew up in Nueva
Ecija where he received his early education in a parochial
school. His training in liturgical music and piano inspired him
to consider the priesthood. He enrolled in philosophy on a
scholarship at AdMU where, upon discovering the poems of
Gerard Manley Hopkins, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Edith L.
Tiempo, he decided on a literary career.

Danton R. Remoto is a Filipino writer, essayist, reporter,

editor, columnist, and professor. Remoto was a first prize
recipient at the ASEAN Letter-Writing Contest for Young

Joel M. Toledo
Filipino poet Joel M. Toledo grew up in Silang in the rural
province of Cavite near to Manilla. The son of a navy man,
Joel's family was impoverished and he grew up without
electricity in his house. His first book of poems Chiaroscuro
is about moving from the darkness of his home to the bright
lights of Manila. Joel M. Toledo holds a masters degree in
Creative Writing (Poetry) from the University of the
Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. He is a literature
professor at Miriam College, also in the Philippines. He was
the winner of the recent Meritage Press Poetry Prize in San
Francisco and placed second in the 2006 UK Bridport Prize
for his poem, "The Same Old Figurative".
