INTRODUCTION
 A Hospital pharmacy is a pharmacy department (or)
services in the hospital organization, managed
under the direction of professionally commitment,
legally qualified pharmacist.
 Hospital pharmacy prepare & dispenses drugs and
provides clinical services in hospitals.
 Its functions is of maintaining drug treatment
records and ordering, stocking, compounding,
repackaging, & dispensing medications & other
supplies related to Hospital.

 Dispenses oral medications.
 Prepare & dispenses parenteral medications.
 Educates & counsels patients.
 Provides drug information services.
 Provides patient counseling services.
 Monitor patient compliance & drug
interactions & therapeutics response to drugs,
& to recognize & report adverse drug reactions

 Planning & implementation of clinical trials.
 Procurement & inventory management of drugs.
 Participating in teaching programs.
 Maintenance of medial & nursing staff & patients.
 Maintenance of central sterile supply services in
hospital pharmacy.
 Screens, monitor, & advices for self-treatment
with over –the-counter (OTC) products sold
without a prescription.
 Providing therapeutic drug monitoring services.

in an area of patient care.

 Develops policies & procedures.

 Depending upon the nature & size of hospitals,
the organization set up will differ but main
department namely the clinical services will be
common in all &all other functions like
Nursing, Pharmacy, Housekeeping &
administrator will support the number of
administrator personal depends upon the size
of the hospital

PHARMACY
 To provide & evaluate the pharmaceutical services.
 To draw a plan for hospital pharmacy
administration.
 To estimate the requirements for the department.
 Clinical & administrative records & reports.
 To estimate the needs of facilities, supplies &
equipment’s & to see the proper control inventory.

 Provide continuing education to all pharmacy
& other departments.
 To participate & adhere safety programs in the
hospital.
 To participate & adhere to the financial plan
for operation for hospital.
 To initiate, utilize & participate in the research
projects in hospital.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF
HOSPITAL PHARMACIST
 Provide education for medical staff, physicians,
pharmacists, pharmacy interns, & other resident students,
nurses & nursing students.
 Dispensing & compounding of drugs.
 Patient counseling & pharmaceutical care.
 Promotes health care or health care services.
 Prescription, parts of prescription, legibility &
identification of medication related problems like drug
interactions, adverse drug reactions problems, & other
drug related problems.

 To maintain inventory control in hospital
pharmacy.
 Patient medication adherence.
 Provide education & counseling regarding OTC
medications.
 Health education regarding to communicable &
non- communicable diseases & family planning
methods.
 Maintaining essential drug list & rational drug
therapy.
 Prepare & implementation of hospital budget.
 Maintaining Hospital drug policy.
