All of our formations will be run with base personnel.
We will have some personnel groupings that will allow us to show defenses different looks from our package of formations.

Installation Of The Option Game

Kings Park 2010

Advantages Of The Option Game
• Allows Us To Get The Ball Onto The Perimeter
• Forces The Defense To Play Assignment Football
• Allows Our Best Athletes To Get The Ball In Space
• Allows Us To Account For Eight Man Fronts
• Gives Us The Opportunity For Big Plays
• Systematic Approach Allows us To Audible At LOS
• Forces Our Opponent To Prepare For Something They Don’t
See Every Week
• Our Opponent Can’t Simulate The Option
• Takes Away The Ability Of The Defense To Blitz
• Allows us to run basic plays from multiple formations
• Will lead us to the Long Island Championship
Hole And Back Numbering
9 7 5 3 10 2 4 6 8
X Z

2 1 4

We call our play with the number of the ball carrier,

followed by the hole number. For example, option left
would be 13 Ollie. All option plays start with a 1, with the
exception of trap option.
We will…
We will…
Dictate Tempo…
We will call and change plays at the line
of scrimmage
Colors and Meanings
1. Green…First Sound/we will put back in motion
with QB heel in order to use first sound
2. Yellow…First Hit
3. Red…Second Hit
4. Blue…Changes direction of play
5. White…Changes play and direction
All other colors are just dummy calls
The most important thing to remember is that
Blue or White change either the direction of
play or both play and direction
Offensive Huddle—Huddle will be called
by center and align 8-10 yards from ball

Only QB talks in Huddle

QB
Cadence For 2010
 Down Black 22 Black 22 Ready Hit
The Play as called in the huddle did not change and the snap
count was one
Down Blue 333 ..Blue 333 Ready Hit
In this case we just changed the direction of the play to be run to
the left.
Down White Mike 22… White Mike 22… Ready Hit
White being the indicator the play was being changed..Mike telling
us what the play was changed to and 22 the direction the play is
being run
Whenever we change a play or direction of a play the snap count
is automatically first Hit…Repeat whenever we change a play or the
direction of a play the snap count is automatically first Hit
The next 2 slides are extremely
important
This is how we will call plays
This is an example play call in the huddle
15 Vince on Yellow
This will be a play call from no huddle
Navy..Navy..Yellow..Yellow..Vince 57..Vince 57
Ready Hit
The rules for understanding the calls are on the
next slide
Navy 15 Vince on Hit
In the huddle we would call the formation followed
by the play
1st example would be Navy 15 Vince on Hit. This
tells us the formation…Navy
 Followed by the play which is veer option left…15
being the option left call since 5 is odd and odd
numbers=left
Vince is another reinforcement that we are running
option.
Hit is snap count
 Navy..Navy ..Yellow Yellow.. Vince 567 Vince 567 Ready
Hit.
 This is a no huddle play call
 What does this mean to us?
 1st Navy is the formation
 2nd Yellow indicates snap count. First Hit
 Vince tells us it is Veer option
 We will still use first names as play indicators—we could call veer
option—Vince—Victor—as examples
 3rd and probably most important is the number. Only the last number
means anything…All our plays have a number designation/all even
numbers are plays run to the right…all odd numbers are plays run to
the left. We will know this from practice and repetition.
 So Navy tell us the formation….
 Vince tells us Veer Option.
 Only the last number in 567 means anything….the 7 which is an odd
number… tells us we are running Veer Option to the left….
 Remember even numbers right and odd number left…
 7 is an odd number so we would be running 15 Victor.
Motion Concepts
• We use motion to gain an advantage at the
point of attack
• We want to remove a defender
• We want to gain leverage
• We want to change the strength
• We want to make a coverage determination
Motion Calls
• Tail Motion--Slot–back away from the play side call.
This motion will be part of most of our option plays
and will not be part of the play call. Aiming point is
the Tail/Butt of the 3 back. Your motion will start on
the R…in Ready…You should have 1-11/2 steps on the
ground at the snap of the ball…You will be running
full speed.
• Long-Tail – Slot Back away from the play side call are
running faster than in tail to align themselves behind
the play side guard. This motion will be started on
the heel movement of the QB/1
• Three Step Motion is run by the play side slot starting
on the hell movement of the QB/1. You want to get 3
steps on the ground or behind the outside hip of the
PSG. Depending on the play you will either get
downhill as a lead blocker or take an open step and
maintain a pitch relationship with the QB/
Motion Calls
Rip and Liz are ZIP(fast motion) across the formation.
This movement will be dictated on the movement of
the QB’s heel. Rip is Right Slot going left and Liz is Left
Slot going right

Room or Loom will be Zoom motion across the

formation by a either X..Z..2..4..when they are aligned
on the opposite side of their normal alignment…Room
is Z going in motion to the right and Loom is X going in
motion to the right

Jet Motion is a call we will use to mesh with the QB as

on Jet Sweep
Motion Calls
1. Cowboy Motion– Is for a wide slot player and is two
steps toward the play and get in a pitch relationship
with quarterback
2. Yo-Yo– Motion when you start one way and go back
to original starting point
3. Slow Motion– when we want a back or TE to stay
same side as play
4. Shuffle Motion—when we want a back or TE to
shuffle to a spot
5. Trade—when a TE/Slot/X or Z trade places on line of
scrimmage
Installing The Midline Option
Installing The Option As A System:
Midline Option
• We Will Install The Midline Option First As It Is The
Easiest Read For The QB
• The Midline Attacks The Middle Of The Defense
• Forces The Defense To Reduce Their Front
• Reduction Of The Front Opens Up The Perimeter
• Complementary Plays Answer What Defenses Do To Take
Midline Away
• Complementary Plays Allow You To Dictate Who Carries
The Football
• We Will Practice It Every Day
• They Will Have A Week To Be Ready
Midline Installation Rules
• Run To A 3 Technique…Key for our QB’s and
lineman to understand
• Run To The Tight End Side–if the formation has
a TE…Later in the installation process we Will
Run It Weak and vs. a 50 Front
• FB Attacks The Midpoint Of The Center
• QB Reads The Jersey Number Of The 3 Tech
• “If The 3 Squeezes, Pull and Replace”
• “If The 3 Comes Up-field Give and Replace

Fold Blocks
• Fold Blocks Give You Advantages As You Can
Get Angles On Defenders
• Like Any Skill Fold Blocks Must Be Practiced
• We Have Two Calls For Fold Blocks
• Jack and Jill Are The Two Calls
• If We Call Jack, The Outside Lineman Will Go
First, And The Inside Lineman Will Step Around
• If We Call Jill, The Inside Lineman Will Go First
and The Outside Lineman Will Step Around
Midline Option: The Jill Scheme
• This Is An Option Scheme Run To A 4-4

Installation Of The Inside Veer: We do not
care what the defense does. We get great
at what we do and run it.
Installation Of The Veer Option:
Why The Inside Veer?
• Attacks The Open Side Of The Defense
• Forces The Defense To Play Assignment Football
Away From The Tight End
• Downhill Blocking Schemes Create Movement
• Zone Combinations Allow For Easier Blitz Pickups
• Easy Read For The QB
• Complementary and Play Action Pass Cause
Conflict In Defenders
Counting in the Veer Option Game

To Be a Kingsmen Lineman

Halfbacks dance and halfbacks flirt, while linemen crawl and eat dirt.
When game time comes, backs run the ball.
When glory comes, they get it all.
But if 100 yards they gain, it's through the linemen's swear and pain.
While halfbacks cry when they see blood, linemen hide it under mud.

Some backs have moves and others speed, but spirit's all a lineman
needs.
Backs are good and some are fine, but they'd be nothing without the
line.
A halfback loves and then he weds, but linemen only love their sleds.
The fans all see halfbacks run, but few see what the line has done.
And that's why those who know agree, there’s half a game the fans
don’t see.

This is a two-on-two drill

working two offensive lineman
vs. a defensive lineman and a This is our three on three drill we do a lot
backer. This is a generic drill because of stacked fronts. We get head up
where we will put guards with tackles that will slant. We work this drill with
tackles and centers with the front side, then the backside. We get our
guards. We want this to be a eyes up and this teaches the kids to be able to
game speed drill once the work an inside threat. We teach patience in
initial teaching is done. this drill and we follow a very strict rule, “Don’t
Chase Backers.”
You must work against twists,
slants, and loops!
