Why classify things?
Classifying and Naming Organism
RUBRIC SCORING
Let’s do the Activity : What’s in a name?
Objectives:
1. Give the names of
organisms as they are known
in your community and
2. Recognize the need to
have a system of classifying
and naming organism.
Let’s do the Activity : What’s in a name?

Materials:

Let’s do the Activity : What’s in a name?
Procedure:
1. Get pictures of
organisms from your
teacher.
Let’s do the Activity : What’s in a name?
Procedure:

2. With your group, discuss

how each organisms called in
your community. Accept any
name which your groupmates
will give for an organism.
Let’s do the Activity : What’s in a name?
Procedure:

2. If you know other names by

which an organism is being
called in another place, include
them. Write these on the lowest
part of the picture. I will give you
5 minutes to finish the activity.
Let’s do the Activity : What’s in a name?
Guide questions:
1. Are there organisms
that others gave the
same name to as your
group did? Give
examples.

that others gave a
different name to as
your group did? What
are these organisms?
Why classify organisms?
 Over a million species so far identified
 Estimates of up to 30 million species on
Earth
 Need to organise this biodiversity
 Systematics tells us about
the patterns in nature,
the way organisms are related,
how they evolve
 Systematics can be used to identify
organisms that are important to us.

What is binomial system of
classification?

The binomial nomenclature
system combines two names
into one to give all species
unique scientific names.
CAPITALIZE the first letter of the genus name.

Do not capitalize the species name.

Both names must be underlined or italicized.

Example: human = Homo sapiens or Homo sapiens

What are the values that you
have learned from todays
lesson?
Students like you, should
be able to appreciate the
value of being organized
and systematic at all
times.
Inorder to attain this,
each one of us should
possess the certain
traits that even
taxonomist possess as a
key to their success.
EXTEND
1. What is Archaebacteria?
Eubacteria?
2. Give the economic importance
of this kind of organism.
