What is InDesign CS6?

Adobe InDesign is a newer version of


Adobe PageMaker, a desktop publishing
program for making any document that
needs some creative layout, from posters
to newspapers.

• 1996: QuarkXPress 4.0
• 1999: InDesign 1.0 code-named “K2”
• 2002: First Mac OS X-native desktop
publishing (DTP) software.

Starting Adobe InDesign CS6

1. Click the Start button/Windows button.


2. Then click All Apps.
3. Choose the Adobe Design Premium CS6.
4. Select Adobe InDesign CS6.

To create a custom workspace

1. Move and manipulate the interface


layout in InDesign to suit your needs.

2. From the workspace switcher menu,


select New Workspace. The New
Workspace dialog box appears.

4. Click OK. The name of your new


workspace appears in the workspace
switcher.

5. Choose Window > Workspace.


Opening a File in InDesign

• Document files use the extension .indd


• Template files use the extension .indt
• Library files use the extension .indl
• Book files use the extension .indb

1. Start InDesign.
2. The Welcome screen appears. If you
do not see the welcome screen,
choose Help > Welcome Screen.

Recent Item, browse to the location of
your file, and click Open.

About the Tools

Hidden tools are indicated by arrows


to the right of the tool icons. The name of
the tool and its keyboard shortcut appear
when you hold the pointer over the tool
—this text is called a tool tip.

To create a new document

1. Start InDesign and choose Edit >


Preferences > Units & Increments
(Windows), or InDesign > Preferences >
Units & Increments (Mac OS).

2. Select Inches in the Horizontal and


Vertical pop-up menus.
3. Leave other settings unchanged, and
click OK to close the Preferences dialog
box.
4. Choose File > New > Document.

5. Deselect Facing Pages.


6. In the Width box, type 3.5. In the Height
box, type 2.
7. Leave Number under Columns set to 1.
8. In the Margins section, make sure that
the chain icon for Make all settings the
same is selected.

9. Type .25 in the Top box and press the


Tab key.
10. Click OK. The new document opens in
InDesign. Observe that the margins are
marked by a margin guide. Also, the
rulers along the left and across the top
are marked in inches.
