    About the poem:

    This poem is written by Rabindranath Tagore in Bengali. It is


    not exactly like the actual extract from Mahabharata which
    was written in Sanskrit by Veda Vyas but its Tagore’s own
    version. In the actual extract Karna was more sterner, clear
    and sarcastic towards his mother while Karna of Tagore
    criticizes his mother indirectly by asking questions along with
    sentiments and irony and also has a wavering heart due to the
    affection deprived by his birth mother coming into life, but
    still remains stern with his resolve.
    Main plot of the poem:
    This poem is set in the banks of river ganga which was mentioned by Tagore as Jhanvi or
    Bhagirathi, where Karna was finishing his late morning prayers. Karna being in the side of
    the Kauravas was the Army Commander. Here Kunti arrives with the resolve to tell her
    long lost son about his true identity. Before the conversation of Karna and Kunti, Krishna
    already discloses the truth about his existence to Karna. When Karna sees Kunti he is
    already aware of the truth and wants to hear it from his birth mother. Kunti unaware of
    this tells Karna that she is the unlucky mother who was deprived of her child's love and
    was forced to leave him right after his birth. She also says that she is the unlucky one who
    had no right to shower affection to her son and how much she has longed for him. She also
    says that when she saw Karna at the tournament while he was being insulted because of his
    identity as the son of a charioteer, she felt her heart ache while seeing him being
    embarrassed. But still she thanks Duryodhan as he supported Karna by declaring him as
    the king of Anga. Kunti tells Karna that she wants him to come back to her and his
    brothers and claim his right. He is the eldest of the Pandavas and Kunti wanted him to
    take the throne and be the sole king to rule while wanted the other brothers to serve him.
    She wanted Karna in her side so she had come to disclose the truth as well as beg her son to
    give her the boon she wanted. But Karna unable to take it questions her about many
    things. He asks her whether she will be able to share her affections which already exists for
    her five sons with him? Will her sons be alright if she suddenly claims him as her son? Why
    did she leave him right after he was born? Did she know the struggle he went through
    while she abandoned him? Why did the affection come out now just before the war and
    where was the affection she had while abandoning him? All these questions shatter Kunti
    and unable to know what to do she just stands there saying that Yudhistar will let go of the
    rights while he is back but Karna unable to let go of his path of rightness and resolve
    declines Kunti’s offer and askes her not to compel him to leave the side of the kauravas
    and also predicts the result of the war. At the end of the poem he asks only for her blessings
    before she leaves.
