Definition of Nursing Research
-Nursing research worldwide is committed to
rigorous scientific inquiry that provides a
significant body of knowledge to advance
nursing practice, shape health policy, and impact
the health of people in all countries. The vision
for nursing research is driven by the profession's
mandate to society to optimize the health and
well-being of populations (American Nurses
Association, 2003; International Council of
Nurses, 1999).
The Importance of Nursing Research in
Nursing
• Nurses ask questions aimed at
gaining new knowledge to improve
patient care.
• Research-based (evidence based)
practice = integrating research
findings into clinical decision making
• Accountability for care-related
decisions; research expands nursing
practice
• Reinforce identity of nursing as a
profession – knowing/ understanding
pts. health care experience
Roles of Nurses in Research
• Preparing trial protocols and other
trial-related documentation.
• Submitting study proposals for
regulatory approval.
• Coordinating the initiation
management .
• Completion of the research.
• Collecting and recording pertinent
data
Evolution of Nursing
Research
• Research in nursing began with Florence

Nightingale. Her Notes on nursing (1859) ,

describes her early interest in environmental
factors that promote physical and emotional
wellbeing.
1900’s
• American journal of nursing has published on
1900’s
• 1900, Most studies focused on nursing education
like educational preparation and clinical
experience of nursing students
• International Journal of Nursing and Canadian
Journal of Nursing published in 1963
1970’s
• By the 1970’s ,the number of nurse’s

conducted research studies emerged.

• 1970s , nursing research from areas such as
teaching, curriculum, and nurse’s themselves

to the improvement of client care, practice.

1980’s
• Availability of computers for the collection and the analysis of
information
• The first volume of the Annual Review of Nursing Research

was published in 1983. These annual reviews include

summaries of current research evidence on selected areas of
research practice and encourage utilization of research findings
• In 1986 of the National Centre for Nursing Research

(NCNR)at the National Institute of Health(NIH) is established.

1990’s
• In 1993, the National Institute of Nursing
Research (NINR) was born.
• In 1986 ,the NCNR had a budget of 16$
million , whereas in fiscal year 1999, the
budget for NINR had grown to about $70
million
Cont’d.
• Journals were established during the 1990s in response to the
growth in clinically oriented research and interest in EBP
among nurses , including clinical nursing research ,clinical
effectiveness, and outcomes management for nursing practice.
• The priorities established by CORP in 1994included low birth

weight , human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection,

long-term care , symptom management ,nursing informatics,
health promotion.
Purposes of Nursing Research
• Provide a scientific basis for
the nursing profession.
• Develop and evaluate new
techniques for delivering
patient care that is vital to
patient’s health needs.
• Develop tools for assessing the
effectiveness of nursing
interventions.
• Provide solutions to problems
concerning health maintenance,
health delivery and health care.
• Help determine the areas of need
relative to nursing practices such as
patient-teaching and nurse-patient
relationships.
• Develop and evaluate alternative
approaches to nursing education that
would enable that student to gain
broad knowledge and specialized
skills for safe practice.
• To prepare oneself to be a
diligent practitioner of
research.
“As science unfolds and expands man's
concept of the boundaries of medicine,
we can expect that this will cause
considerable and important leaps in
the area of health and treatments.”
“Scientific progress and discovery
means less disease, fewer illnesses,
more vaccines, and a better quality
of life for the community as a
whole.”
