CONTEMPORARY

PHILIPPINE
LITERATURE
Literature and history are closely
interrelated. In discovering the history
of a race, the feelings, aspirations,
customs and traditions of people are
sure to be included . . . and these
feelings, aspirations, customs and
traditions that are written is literature.
Filipino writers continue to
write poetry, short stories, novellas,
novels and essays whether these are
socially committed, gender/ethnic
related or are personal in intention or
not.
Contemporary Literature also
has a very important role because it
reflects a society's social as well as
political point of views.

KASIYANA by Janice
Bagawi-Cabahit
TRIVIA
• Kasiyana is an expression to say, “It’s
okay; all will be well.”
• Inayan expresses fear that something
wrong will happen because something is
not done correctly.
When I told my parents we wanted to get
married
Ina frowned and said you’re different,
Not one of us. You’re not an Igorot.
But Ama said,
“Kasiyana. They’re grown-ups and know
their minds.”
When Tatay and your relatives
came to exchange food
Grandma almost didn’t taste the pinikpikan
Because it wasn’t prepared the right way.
But Ina said,
“Kasiyana. They’ve prepared something not chopped
up.”
At the wedding, the visitors
wanted up to dance.
The others said,
“Kasiyana. Maybe he doesn’t know how.
He’s not an Igorot.”
But I asked you to go, and we danced
And it was you who showed me how to do it!
After the wedding, we didn’t do
The rituals that we had to do.
The elders said, “Kasiyana, kasiyana.”
So I am grateful that you are not one of us
For no one said, “Inayan.”

SWEETHEART I’LL LEAVE

SWEETHEART I’LL LEAVE
YOU NOW by Richard Kinnud
Bear in mind, don’t act like you forgot
The reason we run away from home
You selfishly failed to offer the moon
For you said it was extravagant
The one my parents asked for
A pig that require six people to carry
So guests can have a generous fill
Then to be followed by a wedding celebration
Where we can treat our guests to the taste of
intestines
But you made everything uncertain
I wish I had not consented
That come here to Manila
For you simply swayed me over
As if I never knew a thing
You promised we will go back
When we have our first child
But none came, too much time has passed
Love is our foundation
But I yearn for my folks at home
Who I know could direct me to a good life
Come after me if you have wisdom
But leave behind your lies and selfishness
And we’ll continue loving each other
But you have to shell out your treasure
The hometown practices are long set
May be extravagant but bearable
A source of blessing from ancestors
And when done with and we’re in our married life
The money would be earned and replenished
But it is all up to you if you follow me home
