FAR EAST, SOUTH AND THE

PACIFIC LANDS
MYTHOLOGY

MODULE 5
SAQ#5. READ THE STORY OF “TAMING OF THE
SUN” HAWAIIAN MYTHOLOGY. DO THIS IN A
POWER POINT PRESENTATION.
1. IN WHAT WAY DOES THE SETTING OF
THIS MYTH REFLECT LIFE IN THE
HAWAIIAN ISLANDS?
The setting of this story perfectly mirrors living in
the Hawaiian Islands. Maui tames the sun in order to
provide prosperity to his people. This was due to the
community's perception that the days were too short.
Because of the short days, the villagers did not have
enough time to build and restore their village
residences.
. It also shows why Hawaii is one of the
tropical country in the world where the length
of the day and temperature are relatively
uniform throughout the year. It is their weather
phenomenon that creates Hawaii’s rich, green,
and tropical environment.

2. WHAT DOES THIS MYTH REVEAL ABOUT
MAUI’S NATURE? DO YOU LIKE HIM?
Maui is a demigod who has a mother – the patron goddess of
kappa-beating, whom he love so much. He noticed that his
villagers especially his mother are struggling to finish their works
before sunset, but unfortunately, this would never happened
because the sun in the sky traveled so fast, making the days
shorter. Maui is a loving son, caring and helpful that he made a
way to tame the sun even though he knew that it would be too
risky to fight the sun because of its burning hot rays.
Yes, I like Maui’s courage, though he
knew that it took him so long before he
finished the tools he needed and it’s too
dangerous to tame sun, still, he did it out
of love for his mother and the villagers.
3. WHAT DOES MAGIC CONTRIBUTE TO THIS
MYTH? DOES IT EMBRACE OR DETRACT
FROM THE MYTH? EXPLAIN
Magic contributed an excitement to the readers and
explanation to a mystery happened in the story. It
gives acceptable reason for the readers to understand
why such phenomena happened despite its impossible
circumstances. It does embrace and doesn’t detract
from the myth.
Magic adds-up a mystery to be decoded in
order for the readers to continue what they
have reading. It gives the character of the story
an adventure to face and solve the problem to
have a happy ending that the readers looking
forward at the end.

4. DOES MAUI’S BEING A TRICKSTER- HERO ADD TO HIS
HEROIC IMAGE IN THIS MYTH OR DETRACT FROM IT?
EXPLAIN.

Maui’s being a trickster- hero add to his heroic image in

this myth. Trickster doesn’t always mean that you fool
people around for your own benefits. Maui’s act for
tricking the sun was different. This was the only way to
tame the sun in order to help his community particularly
his mother to make their works done in a day.
 This is his way for saving the people because
even the trees and plants couldn’t produce
more food, for the sun traveled the sky in a
very short period of time every day. His
unique strategic plan to tame the sun made
him wise and clever which made the mighty
sun agreed with his terms and conditions.
