Plato’s contribution as a

Critic …
Biography :-

• Plato ( 428/429 – 347 BCE ) was an Athenian philosopher from aristocrat family.
• When criticism of literature was in the darkness , a systematic critic take birth and
that’s Plato.
• Plato was the student of Socrates.
• In initial days Plato used to write poems , after get in touch with Socrates , he
distroyed all his poems and moved forward to philosophy and methematics .
• Established his own academy in 487 BCE , he taught his students Philosophy ,
Methematics , Natural science etc…
• Some powerful figures like : Aristotle , Theatetus (Methematics) and Eudoxus of
Canidus (Methematics) were associated with the academy of Plato.
Works :-

• Plato has written 36 Books and the book “ REPUBLIC “ is most


famous among all of them.
• According to Plato “ Poetry has the power to influence anyone…”
• His most of the works are in dialogue form in philosophy.
1. The Apology of Socrates Is the work based on dialogues of the
speech of Socrates when he had to face trial for immorality and
corruption in 399 BCE. It is among frequently read of Plato’s work.
2. Republic is a well-known work of Plato. It is a political philosophy
in the dialogue of Socrates. The work is on Justice and happiness.
Here we study Book 10 of REPUBLIC.
Political and Social situation of that era :-

• That was the time when politics were so high and corrupt.
• No one focussing on education.
• That was the time of great poet Homer.
• In schools , only Homer’s Poems taught to students.
• Work of Homer compared to Bible at that time.
• Literature becoming immoral , irrational , and Corrupt.
• Philosophers started criticising that works , which was needful at
that time to save the Social conditions and Moral values.

1. Inspiration :-
- Plato says that all art is mimetic by nature ; art is an invitation of
life .
- Example of a Carpenter and Chair.
- Things which are twice removed from reality.
- According to Plato Philosophy is superior to Poetry.
2. Imitation :-

- Plato was idealis.


- According to Plato beauty and goodness are only for Heaven.
- Example of painter. ( Poetry is compared to the painting )
- The thing which is present than what’s the benefit to coping that.
- Painters and poets are compared as same as by Plato.
- Without knowing the real value of that inspiration that shows the lack of knowledge.
- According to some critics theory of inspiration given by Plato is totally wrong in now days.
That’s not copy of anything that’s a beautiful creation.
- “ A thing which an ordinary man can’t see that thing Artist can see easily. That’s what we
call them ARTIST.”
3. Condemnation :-

• Moral :-
- Poetry curept a person morally.
- Poets explain worng things about Gods. Ex. Homer’s – Odyssey and iliad.
• Emotional :-
- No creativity , Supernatural elements , Unnatural , Unconscious talks…
- Emotions or meaning never presented clearly.
1. Rational 2. Spirited 3. Desirus – ( lowest part of human soul , which get
pleasure to see or get irrational things or works . Ex. Plays , Poems etc..
• Intellectual :-
- Poets lives in illusion expect reality.
- Copy a thing from it’s surface level which is far away from reality.
- “ A poet Should ownered but from Plato’s ideal state Poets must
be removed.”
Or
- “ A poet Should be ownered , but They have entry in Plato’s ideal
State.”

• Sir Philip Sidney wrote that , Plato never said poetry is bad thing but only
attacked on bad poetry , which was immoral and corrupt.
