Basic Concept of

Hazard
DEFINITION OF
HAZARDS
Definition of Hazard
Hazard
It refers to anything which may be a source of
probable damage to man, animals and properties.
1. Effects of Hazard to People
2. Effects of Hazard to Human Activity
3. Effects of Hazard to Property
4. Effects of Hazard to Environment
4
5
Definition of Hazard
Hazard Event
It refers to the totality of circumstances that causes
the harm to people, animals, and property.

6
Definition of Hazard
Hazard Assessment
It is the process of identifying potential threat,
determining the possibility of its occurrence and
appraising its possible effect.

7
Definition of Hazard
Hazard Assessment Approaches
In the Philippines, the most common approach used in hazard
assessment is inter-agency communication from the Barangay
Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council to Municipal or City
Risk Reduction and Management Council and to the Provincial
Risk Reduction and Management Council.

8
Definition of Hazard
Hazard Mapping
It is the process of identifying localities which are in danger of natural disasters
like earthquake, ground subsidence, tsunami, and flash floods.

Hazard Mapping in the Philippines is performed by:

DENR (Department of Environment and Natural Resources)
PHIVOLCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology)
PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services
Administration)
DOST (Department of Science and Technology)

CLASSIFICATION OF
HAZARDS
Natural Hazards

It is caused by forces in our environment

that disrupts human activity, or that may cause
damage or injury to life and property.

11
Quasi-Natural Hazards
These are hazards which resulted from natural
process and intervention of human activities.

12
Technological Hazards

Those arising from industrial conditions like

accidents and equipment malfunction which may
cause loss of lives of people, animals, and properties.

Hazards which transpire on the earth’s atmosphere.
Single element
Excess rainfall, freezing rain, hail, heavy snowfalls, high wind
speeds, extreme temperatures, atmospheric
Combined Elements

According to Center for Environmental Geomatics:

Natural Hazards
Any natural process which has the possibility to cause
damage to life and property.

▪ Climate and weather-related hazards

▪ Geophysical Hazards (earthquakes, earthquake-induced
landslides, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions)
20
21
According to Center for Environmental Geomatics:

Anthropogenic Hazards
It includes pollution, deforestation, mining and climate
change.

22
According to Center for Environmental Geomatics:

Other classifications of hazards:

1. Multiple hazards
2. Secondary hazards
3. Chronic hazards

23
Natural Hazards and Human Intervention

1. Human intervention has direct impact to natural

hazards.
2. Human intervention may also result to the
emergence of another hazard.
3. Human intervention may diminish the natural
characteristics of the environment to reduce the
risk of hazard.
24
25
THE IMPACT OF
VARIOUS HAZARDS
Primary Effect

These are those which occur as a consequence of

hazard itself.

27
Secondary Effect
These are the result or outcome of primary effects of hazards.

28
Tertiary Effect

These are long-term effects as a result of a

primary event.
