¿WHEN IS THE BARRANQUILLA
CARNIVAL CELEBRATED?

In Latin America, Carnival is celebrated 40 days before Lent,

which begins on Ash Wednesday, and depends, in turn, on the
date on which Christian Holy Week takes place Its date is mobile
and varies every year. In Barranquilla, the months in which they
are held can be between February and March, always ending on
a Tuesday the origin dates back to the pagan festivals that were
celebrated by cultures such as the Romans offered to the worship
of various gods such as Saturn or the god Bacchus, in all of these
excesses, lust and lack of control prevailed.

BATTLE OF FLOWERS
The celebration begins firmly on Carnival Saturday with the Battle of
Flowers, the first of the four days of celebration, its central act, the most
important and the most anticipated. It is a great parade of floats, led by the
Carnival Queen, followed by folk groups, costumes, cumbiambas and
comparsas, winners of the previous carnival contests. The Battle of Flores is
the oldest parade that takes place in the Barranquilla carnival and was
organized for the first time in 1903 at the initiative of General Heriberto
Arturo Vengoechea who sought to celebrate the end of the Thousand Days
War. With this event, the carnival returned to the city of Barranquilla since
since 1900 the celebration had been suspended. Initially, the Battle of Flores
was a walk through the old Abello median, today Paseo

THE END OF THE
CARNIVAL
As a closing, the burial of Joselito Carnaval takes place, which symbolizes
the end of the festivities. On this day in many neighborhoods of the city there
are humorous "burials" of Joselito, who symbolizes the joy of the carnival. It is
said then that the character "resuscitates" on carnival Saturday and "dies" on the last day
tired and "gouged" (with a hangover) to "resurrect" again the following year at the next
carnival. In this way hundreds of Barranquilleros leave their homes in funeral processions
to mourn the deceased with great histrionics. Joselito Carnaval can be a real person or a
doll and is usually transported inside a coffin or stretcher adorned with flowers and ribbons
and surrounded by his "widows" who mourn him. Widows can be men disguised as
women. In addition to the widows, you can see characters such as priests and orphaned
children.
