Why is Packaging important?

 Packaging objects (e.g. food) is important for our

everyday lives.

 Packaging is used by companies

 To increase the appeal of a product
 For easy transport or handling
 To preserve or protect objects from
contamination (Alamri et al., 2021)

During the pandemic, the amount of non-biodegradable food wastes grew by

15%, and delivery services using packaging, specifically for food, increased by
12% - 36% (Oliveira et al., 2021)

Currently, the most used packaging material today is plastic, with

different plastics being used for different products.
Plastic is a versatile material
 Synthetic material that can be moulded into different shapes to produce
different materials
 Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) – used in plastic water bottles
 Polyethylene (PE) – versatile, light weight
- Low Density Polyethylene – flexible

Not biodegradable Large Carbon Footprint Can cause harm to

Due to these negatives, some people are turning to plastic-free

packaging materials as alternatives (Wiefek et al., 2021).
Plastic-free packaging materials

Examples:
 Paper - Friendly to the environment
- Recyclable; Reusable
- Can be damaged from moisture
- Less durable than plastics
 Cardboard - Friendly to the environment
- Recyclable; Reusable
- Bulky, and not very flexible
- Uses a lot of water for production
Why they are needed:
 To minimize harm to the environment
 To avoid or lessen too much use and dependence on plastic
today
Polylactic Acid (PLA)
About PLA:
 Made from biomass
 Biodegradable
 Friendly to the environment
 Versatile
 Can be moulded
 e.g. shrink wrap, plastic film
http://www.viaddchem.com/pic/big/2018
Disadvantages: -2-1-10-15-45.jpg

 Needs to be disposed into composting facilities

 Not very durable in high temperatures
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Determine the most functional/useful packaging material by

describing:

• Amount of weights they can carry

• Resistance to tearing
• Resistance to water
• Cost to obtain the material

Feasibility of plastic-free alternative packaging materials that is

similar to LDPE grocery plastic bags

Present the benefits of using alternative materials compared to

using LDPE plastic bags
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Why do I intend to pursue this study?

 Plastic over-usage is an issue today

 Can provide data on comparing plastic-free
materials with current plastics

 Checking the weakness of plastic-free alternative

materials
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS
 The study is limited to only 2 sets of each packaging material

 3 alternative materials were used to limit the scope of the study

and because they are used frequently today.

 The results of this experiment will be limited to qualitative

descriptions
