MYTHS ABOUT
CLIMATE CHANGE

1. "CO2 is not a pollutant. It’s a GREEN gas

which plants, crops and trees need to grow."

This is a misinformed statement.

2. "Polar bears have increased their
numbers. They have obviously
benefitted from climate change."

THIS IS TOTALLY
UNTRUE

WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE ?
DEFINITION:

A change in global or regional climate

patterns, in particular a change apparent from the
mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed
largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon
dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.
NASA defines climate change as: ’’a broad
range of global phenomena created predominantly by
burning fossil fuels, which add heat-trapping gases to
Earth’s atmosphere’’.

CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE
The main cause of climate change is global warming, which has many
negative consequences on physical, biological and human systems, as
well as other effects.

Global
warming is caused by the greenhouse effect, a natural process by which
the atmosphere retains some of the Sun’s heat, allowing the Earth to
maintain the necessary conditions to host life. Without the greenhouse
effect, the average temperature of the planet would be -180C.

The problem is that daily

human activities maximize the greenhouse effect, causing the planet’s
temperature to increase even more.

WHAT HAS NIGERIA DONE
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday May 2017 in Paris, France,
appealed to the international community to support Nigeria’s commitment to
reducing the negative effects of climate change.
On steps Nigeria has taken to meet its national goal in this respect, he said
the country has “embraced the issuance of the green bond as an innovative
and alternative source of projects funding that would:
 help reduce emissions
 provide renewable energy
 low carbon transport

Many of the challenges facing
humankind, such as climate change,
water scarcity, inequality and hunger,
can only be resolved at a global level
and by promoting sustainable
development.

IMPORTANCE OF
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT.
TO NIGERIA.

environmental, social and demographic components.

WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ?

According to the UNITED NATIONS in 1983,Sustainable
development is a development that satisfies the needs of the
present without compromising the capacity of future
generations, guaranteeing the balance between economic
growth, care for the environment and social well-being.
