OUTLINE OF THIS PRESENTATION
• MICROBIOLOGY AS A CAREER—AN OVERVIEW

• THE SCOPE AND RELEVANCE OF MICROBIOLOGY

• PROBLEMS IN THE STUDY OF MICROBIOLOGY

• SUGGESTIONS AND SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEMS FACING

MICROBIOLOGY AS A CAREER PROSPECT IN NIGERIA

• CONCLUSION

3
MICROBIOLOGY
• Study of microbes which are too
small to be seen with the naked eyes

• Some are visible to the naked eyes

such as fungi like mushroom and the
bacterium Epulopiscium fishelsoni

• Examples of microbes include

Bacteria, fungi, algae, viruses, etc

4
CAREER PROSPECTS IN MICROBIOLOGY
Hospitals, Clinics and Industries
Isolating and Identifying disease causing microbes
 Research
 Diagnostic testing
 Quality control and health safety
Public Health
Control and prevent diseases\
 Track down sources of disease outbreaks
Education
Teach life sciences
 With PhD, one can follow a research path
Executive position in governments and industries
What of self-employment aspects via e.g fermented products, herbal products e.t.c ???

THE SCOPE AND RELEVANCE OF MICROBIOLOGY
The various branches and specializations in microbiology include but are not limited to:

• Medical Microbiology (Including virology, bacteriology, parasitology etc)

• Immunology

• Genomics

• Biotechnology

• Food and Dairy Microbiology

• Agricultural Microbiology

• Industrial Microbiology

• Pharmaceutical Microbiology

• Environmental Microbiology

6
PROBLEMS FACING THE PROSPECT FOR
MICROBIOLOGY IN NIGERIA
• The career prospects for microbiologists in Nigeria is quite low.

• This could be attributed to a number of issues such as:

1. Inadequate Funding of education, research and development.

2. Poor Teaching Facilities and Infrastructure.

3. Brain Drain.

4. Lack of Proper Curriculum Development.

5. Lack of professional body that regulate the field of general Microbiology

7
• Talk about prospects for microbiologist in developed word using two
popular countries.

SUGGESTIONS AND SOLUTIONS TO THE
PROBLEMS FACING MICROBIOLOGY AS A
CAREER PROSPECT IN NIGERIA
• The relevance of microbiology can be felt in aspects like healthcare,
research and drug discovery, critical thinking, self-employment and
economic development.

• As such to boost the prospects for microbiologists in Nigeria, to elevate

the relevance and maximize the potentials of the field and improve
employability of graduates, the following suggestions are crucial:

SUGGESTIONS AND SOLUTIONS TO THE
PROBLEMS FACING MICROBIOLOGY AS A
CAREER PROSPECT IN NIGERIA
1. Funding of the education and health sector

2. Teacher education

3. Adequate Administration and Planning Process

4. Quality Accreditation and Productivity

5. Provision of research grants and other career incentives to boost productivity and enhance
development

6. Ensuring that the bill on the professionalism of general microbiology at the house of assembly
is passed.

CONCLUSION

Microbiology is a large discipline with many different specialties having a great

impact on fields such as medicine, food sciences, genetics, and molecular biology.
Therefore, the role of microbiologists in national development cannot be said to be
over emphasized. This shows the need to produce microbiologists in universities.
But with the issue of mass student enrollment into universities as well as mass
student graduation out of universities and the global economic recession resulting to
mass graduate unemployment in Nigeria, there is therefore the need to re – engineer
the microbiology taught in our universities to attain the desired motive of education
for self-employment in Nigeria

RECOMMENDATIONS
Having assessed the challenges and prospects of microbiologists in Nigeria, these
challenges can be resolved if the following recommendations are considered for
implementation:

1. Curriculum reviews

2. Enlightenment and sensitization of young people to gear towards self-

employment

3. Increased Government funding of the biological sector

4. Better security for professionals especially in regions facing insurgency

5. Better working conditions and incentives for microbiologists in Nigeria. 12
