Philippine Music
•Inspired by elements of Western music
•Composers started to use Asian sounds and Philippine
sounds using indigenous producing a unique sound
called ‘oriental’ or ‘new music’.
•In 70’s & 80’s Filipinos began to make popular music
by using Filipino language for the lyrics of the songs, the
composition of ORIGINAL PILIPINO MUSIC became a
must

Francisco
Santiago
(1889-1947)
• A composer, pianist, and a teacher
• Became a piano instructor at the University of the Philippine
Conservatory of music in 1916
• Finished his certificate in science and composition at UP 1922
• Took up his Master’s & doctorate degee in Chicago, USA in
1924
• Became the director of UP from 1930-1946
• He also served as a musical director
• He composed classical music, kundiman and film music
• Considered as the “FATHER OF KUNDIMAN ART SONG”
• He changed kundiman from folk song to art song.
Nicanor Abelardo
(1893-1934)

• Most known musician


• Studied in UP in 1916
• He composed a school hymn “UP Beloved”
which won him 1st prize in an open
composition in 1917
• He was appointed as assistant instructor in
Solfeggio and Harmony in 1918
• Become a full-pledged instructor in 1919
• Composed classics, kundiman art songs,
sarsuwelas, popular songs, and operetta.
• He was known for his kundiman composition.
Antonio J.
Molina
(1894-1980)

•“CLAUDE DEBUSSY OF THE PHILIPPINES”


•One of the triumvirate in Philippine music along with Abelardo
& Santiago
•He was the mentor of the famous Lukresia Kasilag & Felipe De
Leon
•Became a National Artist for Music
•Greatest contribution was his innovation for music like the use
of whole tone scale, pentatonic scale, linear counter point, and
the ninths and elevenths chords.

Pedro (1913-2002)

• A teacher, conductor and a master composer whose music


embodies the soul of Filipino legacy.
• Compositions were varied and encompassing
• Created music for bands, violin and orchestras, choral music, solo
voice and chamber music.
• Studied music under various musicians in the Philippines
• Also studied in Julliard School of Music in New York City
• Learned advanced composition under Dutch American musician

UP, Presidential Medal of Merit, 1961, and Rizal
Propatria Award, 1961.
• He wrote marches, hymns, chamber music, orchestral
works, kundiman, sarsuwelas and operas.
• His masterpieces are two operas Noli Me Tangere & El
Filibusterismo
Ryan Cayabyab
(1954-present)

• Is a versatile musician, composer, and a conductor


• Composed music from orchestras to movie sound tracks,
theatres, vocal solos, chorale music, mass, full-length ballets,
& arrangements of Original Pilipino Music.
• He also performed with leading Philippine artists in various
concert halls
• Served as musical director to important performances in the
presence of important personalities such as :
-King Juan Carlos & Queen Sophia of Spain in Manila
-King Fahd of Saudi Arabia in Morocco
-Queen Beatrix at the Noordeinede Palace in the Netherlands
- US President Bill Clinton in Boston
